Toru Dutt was a 19th century Indian poet who wrote in English and French. She was born in Kolkata and tragically passed away at the young age of 21. Her poetry featured Indian themes of mythology and folklore. One of her most famous poems was "The Lotus", which portrayed the lotus flower as more beautiful than the lily and rose. Another notable work was "Savitri", which retold the legend of Savitri from the Mahabharata. A third poem, "Our Casuarina Tree", reflected on childhood memories under a tree and the loss of her siblings. 2. • Poerty is one of the oldest forms of literature.
Many countries have tried their hands in this field
and Indian was not an exception. Tagore is the
most outstanding name in modern Indian literature
and especially in poetry. His fame reached over
the world with his collection “Gitanjali” (1910)as it
won the Nobel prize in 1913. later on, it got
translated in English. Toru dutt and sarojini naidu,
the two female poets were following to tagore.
Toru dutt read ‘paradise lost’ many times and the
effect is clearly found in her work.

Dutt and mother Kshetramoni of the Rambagan
Dutt family. Toru was the youngest child after sister
Aru and brother Abju. . Romesh Chunder Dutt,
writer and Indian civil servant, was their cousin.

o The lotus is sonnet
o Lily and rose had been fighting for the title “queen of

“the lily and rose, long long had beem
rival for that high honor bards of power”
o Her poems have most an Indian theme and Indian
background.
o Lotus is flower of significance both to Indian and hindu
religion.
o In this poem toru present the idea that the Indian lotus is
the most beautiful of all flowers.
7. SAVITRI
i. The most popular poem of the volume is savitri
ii. The story savitri is borrowed from the Mahabharata.
iii. It presents the immortal legend of satyavan”s death and
his wife savitri’s success in getting his soul from Yama,
the good of death.
iv. This poem content five parts and each parts telling
about the life of savitri.
v. This poem deals with the theme of Indian myth.
8. OUR CASUARINA TREE
An autobiographical poem.
The poem underlines the importance of memories in human life.
The tree brings to her mind the memories of the time when see used to
play under it with her brother and sister.
Toru had lost her brother and sister and she has put her memories in this
poem and expresses her feeling in this poem.
“o sweet companions, loved with love intense,
for your sakes shall the tree be ever dear!”
