Classical Greek word “Komoidia”
● In Modern usage Comedy means sense of
Laughter Provoking
● The purpose of Comedy is to amuse
audience
A play characterized by its humorous or
satirical tone and its depiction of
amusing people or incidents, in which the
characters ultimately triumph over adversity.

● The Greeks and Romans
use the word comedy for
the description of stage
plays with Happy-Ending
● Aristotle define comedy
as an imitation of man
worse than average
while tragedy is an
imitation of men better
than the average
What is Sentimental Comedy?
● Sentimental Drama contains both
comedy and sentimental tragedy
● Sentimental comedy is an 18th-
century dramatic genre which sprang
up as a reaction to the immoral tone of
English Restoration plays.
● It appeals especially with our falling
sorrow and pity and compassionate
sympathy
● Sometimes it is comedy of vulgarity,
mannerless and profanity
