This document summarizes and compares several Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for underwater acoustic sensor networks. It discusses the challenges of the underwater acoustic environment including long propagation delays, limited bandwidth, and high transmission power consumption. It reviews several MAC protocols designed specifically for these challenges, including APCAP, DACAP, T-Lohi, and DOTS. It also includes a table comparing these MAC protocols and discusses their relative performance in terms of throughput, delay, energy efficiency, and how well they are suited to different network settings and topologies.
