Avoid Trapping in Flexographic Printing Between 2 Solid Colors.pdf
This document discusses avoiding trapping issues between two solid colors in flexographic printing. It describes trapping as overlapping adjacent colors slightly to prevent misregistration from causing visible gaps. The problem was a label design with solid black and purple colors, where the typical 0.5pt trap appeared as a dark line that the customer disliked. To solve this, the printer discovered they could multiply shades of the purple and gray colors to recreate the black, then print the purple background and overlay the recreated black without a trap. Adjusting the ink formulas and aniloxes on the press successfully removed the dark trap line while maintaining print quality. This provided a solution for the important customer without requiring a change to digital printing.
Expanded gamut printing with CMYK only (Ecofriendly)
When printing packaging, special Spot colors (Pantone) are usually used for brand colors or particular effects and backgrounds in addition to the standard CMYK inks in a CMYK+N approach
The use of Spot colors however makes Packaging more expensive and increases carbon footprint in general: more ink, bigger presses, more energy, etc.
The usual alternative are expanded gamut printing systems based in 7 colors CMYK+RGB approach which are also expensive and not easy to manage from a technical point of view, with still a bigger carbon footprint in general
Tetrachrome instead is a simpler printing system that can achieve an expanded or “enhanced” gamut using only CMYK inks, being able to reproduce most of Pantone colors and all images with a lower cost and a reduced carbon footprint in general, thus being more ecofriendly and more aligned with the sustainable goals of Stora Enso
