Presentation given by Michael McClain (UNESCO-IHE) on Monday 7 May at the 2012 Rotary International Convention in Bangkok. Session: New Opportunities - An Introduction to Rotary's Strategic Partnerships.
On Friday, February 9th, from 9.30 a.m.to 5.30 p.m. in the Room II of the UNESCO Headquarters. The UNESCO, in collaboration with L’Association fédérative nationale des étudiantes universitaires scientifiques (AFNEUS), will host a full-day event in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024. The event will bring together Member States, accomplished and emerging scientists (including the alumnae of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme), stakeholders from the public and private sectors, UNESCO scientific networks and Chairs, as well as students. The event will build on the key findings and recommendations that emerged from the UNESCO Global Forum “The Future for Women and Girls in Science” held in June 2023 and the AFNEUS “Women in Science” Congress held in February 2022. In particular, it will provide the multi-stakeholder platform:
- To unveil the UNESCO Call for Action “Closing the gender gap in science” which provides recommendations aimed at tackling the root causes of gender-based inequalities in science. The Call for Action has been developed based on the contributions from a multitude of stakeholders following the Global Forum "The Future for Women and Girls in Science".
- To share valuable insights on initiatives, resources, and best practices to put the Call for Action in practice and to discuss ways and means to make significant progress in key action areas, namely: innovative education, empowering work environments, and role models/mentors.
The following discussions will be held on this occasion
Roundtable 1 - UNESCO Campus - Fostering Girls’ Interest in Science through Innovative Education in the Digital Age.
Roundtable 2 - Promoting Empowering Work Environments for Women in Science.
Roundtable 3 - Inspiring Women and Girls in Science through Role Models and Mentors.

Up the Ratios Bylaws - a Comprehensive Process of Our Organizationuptheratios
Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.

Palazzo Zorzi Declaration of UNESCO science–related Chairs and Centers from South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, adopted on 28 October 2022 in Venice, Italy
1. Palazzo Zorzi Declaration of UNESCO science–related Chairs and Centers from South-East Europe and
the Mediterranean
Adopted on 28 October 2022 in Venice, Italy
Preamble
The 28 UNESCO science-related Chairs and Centers (see annex) from 8 countries participating in the First Regional meeting of the
UNESCO science-related chairs and Centers for South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, assembled in Venice, Italy, from 26 to 28
October 2022, though an interactive and co-creative approach, under the aegis of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and
Culture in Europe,
Bearing in mind the importance of using knowledge from all fields of science, notably through science education, to address human
needs and aspirations in an equitable manner,
Underscoring the value of generating and sharing scientific knowledge to transform the knowledge commons and ensure open access
to information and data,
Recognizing that that many of the current most complex challenges need to be addressed through more than one approach and one
area of expertise in the sciences and beyond,
Convinced of the necessity of improving connections between science, research, education policies and practices for a sustainable
future,
Within the framework of UNESCO’s strategic priorities, notably UNESCO scientific programmes, as well as Agenda 2030 and other
internationally agreed upon goals,
Adopt the following declaration to
Emphasize the key Role of UNESCO science-related Chairs and Centers, notably
- to provide scientific knowledge, build capacity, support informed policy making and help in building a knowledge society, leaving
no one behind;
- to help connect different scales from local to global, and support internationalization of higher education;
- to act as key agents and promoters of open science and responsible digital innovation notably open and distance-learning
higher education also aiming to reduce the digital gap;
- to promote participatory approaches so that the wider public better understands and can cooperate with UNESCO Chairs and
Centers to address wider societal challenges;
2. - to promote sustainability at the university, research organisation and institutional levels (e.g. through charters and whole institute
approach) and foster cross-sectoral, integrated, and interdisciplinary engagement and literacy.
Highlight the expertise and interdisciplinarity of UNESCO science-related Chairs and Centers, notably
- the importance for them to maintain strong sectoral specialized expertise, while contributing to interdisciplinary action of real
value, creating impact at national, regional and global levels;
- their role as promoters of interdisciplinary and holistic approaches to global challenges notably at city and UNESCO site scales.
Underscore how best to manage these networks, notably through
- the strengthening or constitution of thematic/dynamic groups of UNESCO science-related Chairs and Centers at the regional
and international levels based on demands of Member States and stakeholders;
- the creation of online platforms to co-create knowledge at regional and international scales including mapping of initiatives, best
practices and the promotion of joint projects and facilitating access to joint funding.
Emphasize the importance of an increased visibility of UNESCO science-related Chairs and Centers, notably
- with partners at all levels, including the UN system, to promote their catalytic role as key actors for the implementation of Agenda
2030 and the SDGs;
- with youth and young professionals, highlighting the diversity of UNESCO Chairs and Centers work, creating tutorials, through
summer schools, etc.;
- interacting with National Commissions at the country level
