This document discusses peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and how exercise improves the condition. PAD is a blockage of the arteries in the limbs resulting in reduced blood flow. Supervised exercise training, particularly treadmill walking programs, has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of PAD such as claudication pain and increasing maximal walking distance. Treadmill walking is more effective for improving claudication than strength training alone. The guidelines recommend supervised exercise training to treat claudication symptoms in PAD patients.
