Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a prolific Spanish artist who was born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain and spent most of his life in France. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and began painting at age 8. There were four distinct periods in Picasso's artwork - the Blue Period where he used bleu tones to depict sadness, the Rose Period where he used brighter colors for paintings of clowns and circuses, the Black Period where he was inspired by African art, and Cubism where he used geometric shapes to represent nature. In addition to painting, Picasso also worked in ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking. He lived to age 91, dying in 1973 in France.
