Succession Planning and the Development of Your High Potentials | Webinar 11....BizLibrary
Succession planning success hinges on whether or not organizations effectively develop and nurture their next generation of leaders. We typically see this aspect of succession planning referred to as “high potential” development and it’s frequently just shortened to the term “HIPO.”
The two dominant challenges to HIPO development are:
• Selection of participants
• Building effective development plans
In this webinar we will discuss:
Emerging thought leadership on the organizational/strategic perspective of succession planning
The selection of participants – deciding whom to groom
Practical tips and suggestions for creating a development plan for your own high potential employees

How to Create a Winning Recruitment StrategyCareerBuilder
A winning recruitment strategy is the difference between companies that lead and companies that lag, and now is the perfect time to build or revitalize your recruitment strategy.
As hospitals and health systems continue managing the transition to delivering greater value to patients and populations in the midst of reimbursement degradation, legal and regulatory changes, industry consolidation, and massive workforce demographic shifts, the role and impact of talent management and succession planning practices have come under greater scrutiny. In order to proactively prepare for the unprecedented departure of executive talent while also developing future leaders to address the many implications of the Affordable Care Act, including much greater pressure to demonstrate the value of healthcare services via clinical quality metrics, many hospital organizations have invested in the development of talent management and succession planning capabilities.
This webinar presents findings and practical applications from the semi-annual Healthcare Talent Management Survey, which provides HR executives and senior management teams with direct evidence of the impact of talent management and succession planning capabilities on hospitals’ financial, workforce, and value-based purchasing performance metrics. Webinar participants will learn a practical framework of best practices across a series of capabilities, including talent assessment, role-based leadership development, and onboarding practices. The webinar will conclude with presentation of several case studies highlighting the execution of talent management and succession planning best capabilities at prominent health systems.
Too much talent management is too complex. Talent management does of course incorporate genuine challenges and tough choices. But we don’t need cumbersome processes and practices to make life harder for our executives, managers and professionals.
Summarising talent management into “one page” is too big an ask. Here is our attempt to distil the issues into ten templates:

Partnership gets a lot of lip-service: we want to be loved for what we’re doing now, we want them to change, not us, we want them to give it to us; we don’t want to earn it….What it really takes to be partners? What kind of skills and knowledge partners got to have and what behaviours they have to be engaged in?
You might feel the signs of broken business relationship, but it is hard to diagnose. If you observe that between you (or your organization) and you business partner there are occasions of interpersonal conflicts, “us and them” mentality, defensiveness, finger pointing, non-constructive criticism, there is a good chance that you relationship need repair. You can fix them, if you follow the right steps.Business Relationship Management is partially art and partially science. First, you need to earn trust in the eyes of your partner and prove your credibility and second, you need to develop right competencies of yours and capabilities of your organization.
Analytics is important to understand & appreciate the career pathing choices made by various employees. This will also aid in better sculpting and engagement choices organizations can make

What did you notice about the person that talked with you?
How did it leave you feeling?
Information to share: Wall Street Journal article about impact talking about yourself, feeding, giving someone money has the same impact on the brain (same location lights up!)
In Shifting Gears – I ask this question and listen, because your answer tells me something:
Lead with title or talents?
Lead with past, present, or future?
Get stuck - - move forward
Smile or not?
This is the #1 interview question – I ask it to allow the person to relax (every book tells them this is what I will ask) – and where they start matters because it helps me learn more about them.
Which leads me to Point #1:

Here is an example. Anyone know Jim Dreyer? What did he accomplish?
Tell his story - - What is Jim’s talent? (let them answer . . . )
Point to make:
We often make the leap - - talent = title, talent = accomplishment
That is so limiting and general. Accountant is so general . . . . .
Time: 5 min (part of previous 2 slides) Start – 10:27
Gallup has done lots of research around this - - and their book Strengthsfinder 2.0 has been on the Top 5 business books for a decade.
Some key points around talents
The definition – Jim Dreyer probably has some great stories about how his talent was NOT productively applied.
24 x 7: Talents don’t show up in our big decisions, it is the thousands we make daily without thinking about them. We cannot turn them off!
The formula – probably the #1 way I have conversations with people around development.
Fixing weaknesses is not a good use of resources. Talent is wired into your brain, and leveraging it, building it into a strength is the focus.
When we think about talents
Achiever, Command, Connector, Input, Analytical, Woo, Relator,
Question: What are some talents you see in yourself, maybe the people you work with?

Story:
First year I had a client, senior leader that was pegged for a potential President role in the distant future. Our first meeting I asked to see his priorities or something around what his responsibilities were, he had kind of an idea, but it was not clear. When asked “Would it be valuable to have a conversation around a basic job description/scorecard?” – he answered a quick YES!
