Outpatient Surgery Centers in India
Introduction
Outpatient Surgery Centers in India
Growth Rate: Outpatient Surgery in India
Competitive Scenario: Leading Market
Players
Market Drivers: Outpatient Surgery Centers
in India
Market Drivers: Outpatient Surgery Centers
in India
Recommendations
Conclusion
 The Outpatient surgery; which also known as ambulatory surgery, day case, or day
surgery, is a kind of surgery procedure which require the patient to stay in the
hospital/healthcare institution for less than 24 hours. The outpatient surgery does not
require an overnight hospital stay
 The term “outpatient” arises from the fact that surgery patients may go home and do
not need an overnight hospital bed. The purpose of outpatient surgery is to keep
hospital costs down, as well as saving the patient time that would otherwise be wasted
in the hospital
 Outpatient surgery has grown in popularity due to the rise in outpatient surgery centers
and improved technology
 With shorter medical procedure duration and fewer complications it makes sense to let
patients go home sooner. About 55% of all surgical procedures are done on an
outpatient basis
 The outpatient surgery allows the patient to return home on the same day after a
surgical procedure is performed, could be a novel platform for the Indian healthcare
industry to grow
 In coming years, the healthcare industry would have a number of players in the sector
 The outpatient surgery platform/centers increase the accessibility and affordability of
surgery to the common patient and the sector has huge potential in India
 In India, where there is an acute shortage of health care capacity and with adequate
availability of surgeons, the ASC industry can play a better role to deliver surgery related
services.
 In US, it took almost 30 years for the model to claim the major share of the total
surgeries happening in the country. In India, it just introducing the model and it will take
some time for it to get established.
 In 2016, the outpatient surgery market accounted at around 42 percent which is
expected to grow at around 75 percent by the end of 2024 in India
 In next 5 to 10 year's time, it is expect that almost all major hospitals in India will build
their outpatient surgery centers, as the model offers huge potentials.

In the last decade, a small but significant
number of outpatient surgery centers have
been set-up in our country, primarily in
Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology and
Orthopedics are other specialties which
contribute to a substantial chunk of
outpatient surgery services being offered in
India.
Hospitals are increasingly dedicating few of
their beds as day care beds, making an
efficient use of the assets available to them.
More centers are expected to be operational
in the near future.

 The opportunity for outpatient surgery centers in India is now gradually recognized and will
be at the forefront of the healthcare industry growth in the future.
 In 2016, the market size of outpatient surgery centers accounted at around USD5.38 billion,
and it is projected to be around USD12.25 billion by the end of 2022.
Figure: Indian outpatient surgery centers market, by value (USD billion),2012-2022
 During the last decade, India witnessed a significant pace in the number of providers
offering outpatient surgery solutions to the consumers. Competition among outpatient
surgery centers is gradually brewing up and the providers are now focusing more on a
“patient-centric” approach. Providers in the short stay business are scripting success
stories irrespective of the specialty they offer, reflecting rising acceptance among the
consumer base.
 Players like Nova Specialty Surgery or Centre for Sight have demonstrated that the age of
“low asset-high returns” format is on the anvil. These providers have clearly indicated the
growing aspiration to drive the business, creating more value to the patient and
institution. Emboldened by the growing “expansion” wings. Nova, for example, had
envisaged opening 25 such centers very soon. More such players are expected to join
this “club” of new age delivery format in the next five years.

Market Drivers: Indian Outpatient Surgery
Centers
•Admission and discharge process is simple, less
cancellations and delays, more convenient
location
Consumer Convenience:
•Consumer pays less money for the surgery
compared to same surgery in a hospital
Cost Effectiveness
•Increased insurance coverage support for day
care procedures reduces burden on consumer
Healthcare Funding
•Patients are safe from Hospital acquired infections
Patient Safety:
 In an emerging economy like India, healthcare players are realizing the need
for innovation, and are focused on reducing costs across the healthcare
delivery system. They will increasingly invest in asset-light businesses by
using pay-per-use and leasing models for setting up smaller centers to lower
capital expenditure
 Moreover, the coverage of day care procedures by insurance providers is
going to increase in the future due to lower pricing, more convenience and
faster claim settlement
 Day surgery bears fewer risks of hospital-acquired infections, postoperative
complications are usually minor, and mortality is extremely low, thereby
bringing down the payout by insurance companies
 Around 70 percent of the total surgeries performed globally are outpatient or
day care surgeries and this trend is also on the rise in India recently. In India,
almost 60 percent of all surgeries can be done in a outpatient surgery or
day care mode as the current infrastructure supports
Well, keeping in mind the safety of the
patient, with all due precautions and
careful patient selecting, meticulous
preparation, outpatient surgery has a wide
safety margin and good success rates. It
haseconomical benefits, which, developing
nation like India, with 29 percent of its
population living below the poverty line,
cannot afford to ignore. Its 20 percent
urban population with not enough time to
spare would tremendously benefit by
popularizing the concept of outpatient
surgery. Outpatient surgery or day surgery
will be the Future of Modern Surgery, in
India.
Thank You.

The outpatient surgery does not require an overnight hospital stay  The term “outpatient” arises from the fact that surgery patients may go home and do not need an overnight hospital bed. The purpose of outpatient surgery is to keep hospital costs down, as well as saving the patient time that would otherwise be wasted in the hospital  Outpatient surgery has grown in popularity due to the rise in outpatient surgery centers and improved technology  With shorter medical procedure duration and fewer complications it makes sense to let patients go home sooner. These providers have clearly indicated the growing aspiration to drive the business, creating more value to the patient and institution. Emboldened by the growing “expansion” wings. Nova, for example, had envisaged opening 25 such centers very soon. More such players are expected to join this “club” of new age delivery format in the next five years. Sl.
