AIM :
To solve problems of OT services and give presentation.
1. Following complaints were being received by the Medical Superintendent from patients as well as
the OT staff of a 400 bedded hospital –
a. Air conditioning of OT is ineffective.
b. Many people were around inside the OT
c. Short supply from CSSD
d. Frequent postponement and cancellation of surgery.
3. 2. The Medical Superintendent on analysis of hospital statistics found there was a relative increase in
length of stay of surgical cases over last six months as compared to the figures of previous years. He
also found that post-operative infection rate has increased to 10%. Medical Superintendent therefore
ordered the hospital OT committee to go into reasons for unprecedented rise in hospital infection rate
and to recommend remedial measures.
OBJECTIVES:
Develop operating procedure for optimum utilization of O.T.
Maintenance of high standards of asepsis.

Absenteeism of technicians
Old machinery
No cleaning of the filters
Less maintenance

SOLUTION:
Recruit sufficient no. of technicians
Formulate standard of procedures
Replace with new machines
7. Many people were around inside the OT:
No security personnel on duty
Less active staff
Too many surgeries
Less awareness
No specific guidelines for attendants
SOLUTION:
Allot proper place for attendants
Formulate guidelines
Display sign boards for restricted areas
Recruit security personnel
Entry only for authorized personnel
8. Short supply from CSSD:
Insufficient equipment
Less no. of staff
No specific procedures
Excessive workload
Less no. of autoclave machines
Staff not trained (new staff)
Inventory control not followed strictly
SOLUTION:
Replace faulty equipments
Training to CSSD staff
Ensure availability of sufficient autoclave machines
Maintain inventory control
9. Frequent postponement and cancellation:
Insufficient staff
Absenteeism of staff
Less no. of rooms for operation
Insufficient supply of equipment
Staff is not skilled
SOLUTION
Recruit optimum no. of staff
Training of staff
Ensure adequate supply from CSSD
Penalty for absenteeism

Timely preparation of patients for operation theatre

12. Maintenance of high standard of asepsis:
Disinfection and sterilization of instruments
Environmental cleaning
All items used within a sterile field must be sterile
A sterile field should be maintained and monitored constantly
Sterilization indicators must be present
A surgical scrub is performed as per as the “WHO hand hygiene guidelines”
Removal of dirty materials from the suite without passing through clean areas
