INTRODUCTION
 It is my pleasure to be amongst you today
 The topic ‘’ our health, our business’’ is apt.
 Since health is wealth, and business creates wealth, it will be
right to say ‘our health is our business’.
 It then goes without saying that we must grow and nurture
our health
 Good health is needed for one to embark on any meaningful
venture .’
 It is in light of this realization that Sir Winston Church Hill
posited that ‘healthy people are the greatest asset of any
society’.
INTRODUCTION CONTD
 Health is one of those terms which most people
find difficult to explain although they are
confident of its meaning.
 Health is a state of complete physical, mental and
social well being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity.-WHO[1948]
 This definition envisages many dimensions to
health; physical, mental and social. Many more
may be cited, viz; spiritual, emotional, and
vocational
INTRODUCTION CONTD
The goals of medicine are to promote
health, preserve health when it is impaired
and to minimize suffering and distress
Approaches to effective healthcare include
preventive, curative and rehabilitation.
Our concern this evening shall be on
preventive approach for it is the cheapest
and most effective strategy
STAYING HEALTHY
The work of a businessman/public servant
is stressful and time consuming.
Each day, we encounter personal, social and
economic challenges in the course of our
daily activities.
It is therefore imperative for us to optimize
our physical, mental and social wellbeing in
order to effectively tackle this recurrent day
to day problems.
Staying healthy contd
Hence, this interaction to equip us
with relevant facts for staying fit.
It is not right to spend all your life
chasing money, then in reverse
spend all the money chasing life.
STAYING HEALTHY CONTD
According to the WHO, eating a
healthy diet, increasing physical
activity and avoiding tobacco use
can prevent:
80% of premature heart disease
80% of type 2 diabetes cases, and
40% of cancers
WHAT WE MUST DO TO STAY HEALTHY
 Eat right,
 Avoid Tobacco in all its forms and excessive alcoholic
intake,
 Stay away from drugs,
 Exercise,
 Know your numbers [weight, height, BP, BS],
 Marry, love and be faithful to your partner,
 Plan your family
 Cultivate hand washing culture and keep our
environment clean.
 Pray without ceasing.
EAT RIGHT
 Eating right entails eating a healthy diet.
 Healthy food must be
 balanced containing adequate fruits ,vegetables,
and minerals
Prepared and served in a hygienic state
Eaten at the right time
 Heart disease, certain cancers, stroke and
diabetes can be linked to what we eat.
 By making healthier food choices, you can also
lower your cholesterol and lose weight.
Eat right contd
 We must drink adequate volume of water and
minimize consumption of red meat and
junk/processed foods, fried foods.
 A daily water intake of 3.7 L for adult men and 2.7
L for adult women meets the needs of the vast
majority of persons.
 Minimize carbohydrate and fatty meals. We must
eat more of natural foods and white meat/fish
and less of processed and junk meals.
EXERCISE
 All work and no play make Jack a dull man.
 Include exercise in you daily schedule
 Invest at least 30mins daily doing physical activity of your
choice.
 If your time is limited, exercise in brief periods throughout
the day; eg a three 10 minute sessions rather than a one
30minute session.
 We have basket of options to choose from; brisk walk,
cycling, skipping, swimming, playing football, table tennis
etc.
 Do not park your vehicle too close to your office.
EXERCISE
Exercise can help prevent
heart diseases eg,high blood pressure,
stroke
diabetes,
osteoporosis and back injury
depression.
colon cancer,
You'll feel better and keep your weight
under control if you exercise regularly.
WATCH YOUR WEIGHT
Too much weight increases your risk for
high blood pressure,
high cholesterol,
diabetes,
heart disease,
cancers,
gallbladder disease and
arthritis
WATCH YOUR WEIGHT
High-fiber meals-found in fruits, vegetables
and grains
Low-fat diet and
Regular exercise can help you lose weight .
BMI = body mass index=
weight[kg]/height[M2];
18-25-Acceptable
26-30-over weight
Above 31-obesity
AVOID TOBACCO
 Smoking is a very dangerous habit.
 About 1.3 billion people in the world are currently smoking.
 Globally, tobacco causes about 5.4 million deaths yearly
 By 2020, WHO estimates that global death toll from smoking
will hit 10 million.
 Tobacco has been implicated in over 60disease conditions
GIT, RS, CVS, and Cancers.
 More preventable illnesses (such as emphysema, mouth,
throat and lung cancer, and heart disease) are caused by
tobacco use than by anything else. The sooner you quit the
better.
 Smokers are liable to die young. No advantage is attributed
to smoking
MODERATE YOUR ALCOHOLIC
CONSUMPTION
 Alcohol is a drug and not something you can consume like
water.
 Many erroneously believe that it is a way to relax and
overcome depression .
 Alcoholism is usually as a result of social[family, peer, society,
availability of alcohol] and psychological factors[stress,
inadequate coping mechanism and reinforcement of alcohol
use from other drinkers.
 Excessive consumption of alcohol has been implicated in
various medical problems;
 Psychological [inappropriate behavior, loss of inhibitions
and associated permissiveness, memory and mood problems
loquaciousness, stupor, suicidal tendency],
Moderate your alcoholic consumption
 Physiological [ malnutrition,peptic ulcer,
gastritis, fatty liver, pancreatitis, cardiomyopathy,
peripheral neuropathy, Ca of mouth, pharynx,
malnutrition]
 Socio/economic [family disintegration and
embarrassment, poor work performance,
antisocial behaviour, poverty and wastage of
meager family resources,.
 Crimes/accidents[deaths from car wrecks,
murders and suicides.]
Moderate your alcoholic consumption
Medical advantage of alcoholic consumption is
controversial, some scholars suggest that
moderate consumption could be cardio
protective as it raises the level of HDL
cholesterol in the blood
If you must drink , do not take more than 2
drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for
women.
One drink is equal to 1 can of beer (36cl), a 4-
ounce glass of wine or a jigger (3cl) of liquor
DRUG ABUSE
 The habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs.
 It can also be defined as consumption drugs without
prescription from a qualified health practioner.
 There are more deaths and more disabilities resulting from
drug abuse than any other preventable health condition.-
WHO
 Some 200 million people worldwide has used illicit drugs at
least once in the past 12 months.-UNODC World drug report.
 Do not indulge in drug abuse and self medication.
 Consult your doctor whenever you have a health condition.
 Stay away from illicit drugs use e.g. marijuana, cocaine,
heroin etc- for you don’t just ruin your wellbeing, you also
contravene the law.
Socialize and have fun
Make out time to unwind and have fun with
your family.
Stay social active- do voluntary work
Being with people help you to be more active
and more able to manage depression and
improve your eating.
Practice mental skills like reading, writing and
imagination.
Ensure you get enough sleep everyday.
Think young, feel young
HAND WASHING CULTURE
Hand washing is the act of cleaning the
hands with soap and water for the
purpose of removing soil, dirt or
microorganism.
The single most effective way to prevent
the transmission of disease is hand
washing.
There are about 5000 germs in the hand
at any given time.
HAND WASHING CULTURE contd
 Diarrhea and RTI are the biggest killers of
children in the developing world.
 The simple act of washing hands with soap and
water after contact with excreta can reduce
incidence diarrhea disease by over 40% and
respiratory infections by 30%
 This makes hand washing a better option for
disease prevention than any single vaccine.
 Hand washing is timeless wisdom and it is indeed
the most important habit to inculcate for health
as well as social reasons.
MARRY, BE FAITHFUL, PLAN YOUR
FAMILY
 Research indicates that married people are
happier and live longer than single.
 Getting married is a good way to live longer.
 Having a family and living with a spouse gives
individuals something to live for, compared to
their single counterparts who may have been used
to living a self-centered life.
 Mutual fidelity is very vital to avoid contracting
STDs.
 Have the number of children you can cater for.

immunization.
Breast cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most common
causes of death for women.
From the age of 50 , women should have a
mammogram every 2 years to screen for
breast cancer.
Women who have risk factors for breast
cancer, such as a family history of breast
cancer, need to have mammograms more
often and start having them sooner.
Pap smear
Pap smear is the screening test for
cervical cancer
It is done every 3 years beginning at 21
years of age and continuing until 65
years of age
