- We are living and working in EXCITING times, especially in technology. Its like WE ARE sitting in the front row of a boxing match, BUT REALLY, WE ARE ALL ACTUALY IN THE RING PROFESSIONALLY, I have spent >25 years in technology, WORKING THROUGH THE TRANSITION FROM Mainframes, to client server, to virtualization and now to the cloud AS A FATHER, I HAVE WATCHED my three kids 18-15-13 LIVE a true digital life. TODAY, WHETHER PROFESSIONALLY OR PERSONALLY, WE are all living a digital life Sounds so futuristic doesn’t it? But it’s not…it’s here and now and we haven’t seen anything yet! BEFORE looking into our digital futures, LET ME GIVE YOU A little historical perspective. For anyone over the age of 30 it’s actually been a long-time coming… I would say it all started with the personal computer about 40 years ago LOOK how far we’ve come.
- And it’s not just computers anymore… look how far and how fast that MECHANICAL Icon of our daily lives….the automobile….has changed… Today’s cars have more computers in them than most offices. SOON, WE WON’T HAVE TO DRIVE OUR CARS TO THE OFFICE, OUR CARS WILL BE OUR OFFICE.
- And we now have a generation (OR TWO) who have only lived a digital life! They’ve never known a world without PCs, WIRELESS INTERNET, mobile phones, social media or eCOMMERCE My kids don’t watch television….they don’t know what a pay phone is……never gotten a letter in the mail from a friend! My kids have no idea what a cassette looks like and are amazed that I still own CDs!

AT FIRST I WAS EMBRASSED BY THIS – BUT THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT… TODAY PEOPLE HAVE A MUCH DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIP WITH TECHNOLOGY MY LATEST EXAMPLE OF HOW MY KIDS KEEP ME YOUNG e 18 years makes. HOW OUR LIVES HAVE CHANGED!
- For all of us young or not so…..technology is so embedded in our lives, we don’t quite know what to do if it’s NOT available FOR MY KIDS I WOULD PREFER IT TO BE UNAVAILABLE, ESPECIALLY AT DINNER TIME. So when we say CONFIDENCE, and I will use that word throughout my talk today What I mean is people want to be confident that the digital part of their lives is there WHEN, WHERE AND HOW they want it… That’s why enterprises today must be able to deliver Non-Stop business continuity, and to deliver seamless digital experiences to THEIR users, CUSTOMERS, EMPLOYEES AND PARTNERS We all know this ISN’T EASY TO DO WE SEE every company scrambling to transform their business And DETERMINING HOW TO BECOME RELEVANT TO THE NEXT GEN OF USERS USER confidence only happens through business continuity and AVAILABILITY
- And how critical really is it to deliver user CONFIDENCE AND HAVING non-stop business continuity…to be always-on with availability? There a new business mantra: NON-STOP If you don’t live by it you will soon be ‘Amazoned’ (just ask B&N or Blockbuster) or ‘Ubered’ (just ask all the taxi firms across the world) Also, think about the user experience. If your services go down, users will go elsewhere, to get the experience they want. A poor digital experience is as bad as NO experience. IDC predicts THE DIGITAL UNIVERSE TO REACH 180 Zettabytes by 2025… I looked that up 180 Zettabyte is 180 FOLLOWED BY 21 ZEROS IT’S A BIG FREAKEN NUMBER In 2015, 90% OF THE WORLD’S DATA HAD BEEN CREATED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS BY 2016, 90% OF THE WORLD’S DATA HAD BEEN CREATED IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS I DON’T HAVE THE #’S FOR 2017, BUT I’D BET THE PACE IS ONLY ACCELLERATING Data is to this century what oil was the last century IT’S A Driver of massive growth and change. This is not just about technology, but also new ways of doing business. IN 1859, WHEN THE FIRST COMMERCIAL OIL WELL WAS DRILLED IN PENNSYLVANIA NO ONE COULD HAVE PREDICTED ALL OF OIL’S APPLICATIONS, NEITHER CAN WE WITH DATA. THERE WILL BE WHOLE NEW INDUSTRIES CREATED, AND QUICKLY IDC predicts over $2.1 trillion will be spent in 2019 on technology and related services to implement and manage Data initiatives ITS MORE THAN DATA, IT’S THE INTELIGENCE YOU GET FROM THE DATA THAT IS CRITICAL BETTER AND FASTER DATA GIVES COMPANIES THE ABILITY TO MAKE BETTER DECISIONS Uber is best known for cheap and fast rides and is worth over $68B. Why such a high valuation? Because it owns the biggest pool of data about supply (drivers) AND THEIR RESPONSES TO INCENTIVES and demand (passengers) AND THEIR USEAGE PATTERNS Essentially it’s value is the potential for what it can do w/ the DATA ALL industries are being impacted by digital transformation. Who would think of a car company also being a software and ANALYTICS company. Tesla cars collect tons of DRIVER data that allows Tesla to optimize the self driving algorithms and automatically update the software. The need for APPLICATIONS AND DATA to be ”always on” is now “mission critical” for ALL companies. You can’t be a digital business unless your APPS AND DATA, and INFRUSTRUCTURE (ON AND OFF PREM) are always and instantly available.
- And it’s not just about consumer companies… Even industrial giants LIKE as GE, a 125 year old company founded Thomas Edison, are reinventing their business…into a digital business. For example, some airlines now buys Thrust-as-a-Service from GE, NOT engines Digital Transformation is a top priority for CEOs Because Digital lives also includes digital work lives!
