Otherside- Red
Hot Chili
Peppers
ANALYSIS
– Through a variety of camera shots, this music video has a mixture of close ups of Anthony Kiedis the
lead singer, and wide shots of the rest of the band imitating playing instruments on an abstract
scenery, moreover many camera angles on the protagonist of the narrative who is based on Hillel
Slovak dedicating the song to him.
– Editing was used to signify the scene transitions and also change the pace of the music video as it
gradually spirals into a more faster pace to show the conclusion of the protagonists vulnerability and
death. There is a variety of special effects that the characters use, the whole scenery is created via a
computer portraying this surrealist world.
– Moreover, the Mise- en- scene is considered significant in this music video due to the monochrome
colors except for the element of red and other colors to make it symbolic and stand out. This further
links to the props created as part of the narrative and editing, as well as the use of fully black
clothing to blend into the setting. This cartoonish story line is juxtaposed upon the song; that of a
young man's dream sequence, however links to their experience.
– There’s a relationship between lyrics and the music video itself as the song is dedicated to the
former band member Hillel Slovak who died of a heroin overdose in 1988, the song talks about this
struggles with addiction.
The representation that could be considered is addiction and personal experiences
from the band during this time. This is communicated to the audience who
understands the bands previous struggle with substance abuse, and overlaps the
issues of addiction during the 80s and 90s in the music industry. This links to
Andrew Goodwin’s theory as there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals,
moreover the demand of close up of artists as there are camera shots of the lead
singer of the band Anthony Kiedis. However, the stereotype that Goodwin
highlights is that bands tend to produce a performance based videos, although the
overall video is completely narrative which is used to connote the lyrics more
towards the audience so they can understand the songs meaning.
– Record Label- Warner Bros
– Directors- Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris, music video directors who have worked with Oasis,
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys as well as American film directors who have created ’Little
Miss Sunshine’ and the romantic comedy-drama ’Ruby Sparks’. Influenced by German
Expressionist art, elements of cubism and work by the graphic artist M.C Escher are also seen in the
video, however this isn’t considered typical compared to their original work in films but a lot of their
music videos are narrative based like the ‘Otherside’.
Jonathan Dayton stated: "We did look at Caligari, and we looked at a lot of German Expressionist film.
But it was also very important to avoid 'Caligari.' It was both inspiration and something to work around,
because it has such a strong, specific style, and there have been other videos that have completely
ripped it off."
Opinion- I believe this music video was an overall success due to the relationship between visuals and
the lyrics showing the audience their personal experience, this is an interesting video making it symbolic
from the video of a dreamlike state linking to their band member. The only thing I don’t like is the
special effects, from a modern perspective I find it outdated, besides from this I enjoy the music video.
This video is conventional for the work of Red Hot Chili Peppers, as there videos are usually narrative,
although the stereotype of bands are performance videos. This might influence my work through the
link between lyrics and visuals, however I wouldn't of focused on the editing too much.
