1. OSMF
OSMF = Oral SubMucos Fibrosis
Oral Sub-Mucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, scarring, high risk, potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa.
Oral Sub-Mucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic debilitating disease of the oral cavity characterized by inflammation and progressive fibrosis of the
submucosal tissues (lamina propria and deeper connective tissues) resulting in marked rigidity and an eventual inability to open the mouth.
Malignant transformation rate is 8%.
PREVALANCE:
Worldwide, estimates of OSMF indicate that 2.5 million people are affected, with most cases concentrated on the Indian subcontinent, especially
southern India.
An epidemiological assessment of the prevalence of OSMF among Indian villagers based on baseline data, recorded a prevalence of 0.2 %(
n=10071) in Gujarat, 0.4% (n=10287) in Kerala, 0.03% in Maharashtra (n=101,761), 0.04% in Andhra Pradesh (n=10169) and 0.07% in Bihar
(n=20388).
ETIOLOGY:
Beetle nut chewing, Ingestion of chilies, genetic and immunologic process, nutritional deficiencies.
Tobacco chewing is a major risk factor in OSMF as it is in leukoplakia and cancer. Alcohol increases the risk of leukoplakia by 1.5
fold and OSMF by 2 fold.
