The coral tree is a spreading tropical and subtropical tree legume known for its conspicuous red blossoms. It can reach heights of 18-25 meters with a crown diameter of 6-12 meters. The coral tree has compound, trifoliate leaves on petioles 2-28 cm long. It has many prickly branches and a grey or grey-green bark. The coral tree produces terminal racemes of bright red petals that are shorter than the minutely 5-toothed calyx. It has cylindrical pods 10-25 cm long used for various medicinal purposes and as a vegetable.

• Root: shallow-rooted , the root exploring only the upper

bark is grey or grey-green in colour.

Calyx is about 4cm long and minutely 5 toothed at

Ovary many ovuled , style incurved.
•Fruits: the fruits are cylindrical pods constricted
around the seeds, 10 to 25 cm long and 1.2 to 2 cm
in diameter.

•Young, tender leaves and young sprouts eaten as vegetable, used in
curries.
•Seeds used internally and externally for cancer.
•Juice of leaves used to cure earache , toothache and cough. Also used to
stimulate lactation and menstruation.
•Roots used for skin disease.
