1. UNM-Valencia Blackboard Learn Student Orientation
Fall 2018
By the end of this orientation, students will be able to confidently:
• use the tools native to UNM Learn for assignments, communications, and other
information about classes (Navigation).
• complete a quiz posted in UNM Learn and check their scores in My Grades
(Taking a Quiz or Test).
• determine how suited they are to the online learning environment (Online
Readiness).
• list the support options available to them at UNM-Valencia (Support).
• create and respond to a discussion posting (Discussions).
• plan their time appropriately (Time Management).
• upload a PDF formatted document into the Assignment tool (Assignments).
• send a course message inside UNM Learn with an attachment (Course
Messages).
In order to earn their Completion Certificate, they need to score 90 out of 100 points..
Unit 1: Navigation, Notifications, and Taking a Quiz or Test
By the end of this unit, students will:
• determine the difference between the Global Navigation Tool and the My
Blackboard Tool, and understand the elements in and purpose of each.
• designate which tool is used for notifications.
• complete a quiz over navigation tools and tools for taking a quiz or test.
• designate where they can receive notifications from their classes in UNM Learn.
• designate the different types of information available to them in the Global
Navigation tool, the My Blackboard tool, the My Grades tool, the House Icon, and
the Notifications tool.
• determine where in UNM Learn they can start a quiz or test and determine due
dates.
• determine where they can view their grades and read instructor feedback on
graded assignments.
Unit 2: Online Readiness, Support, and Discussions
By the end of this unit, students will:
determine their readiness to succeed in the online environment.
• discuss support options available, from main campus and Valencia campus, to
help them succeed in their courses.
• review how to navigate the Discussion Board and post and reply to discussion
postings.
• review netiquette policies and guidelines.
• create a post in the Discussion forums and reply to a post.
• observe the use of a rubric in determining the grade for a discussion post.
2. Unit 3: Time Management and Assignments
By the end of this unit, students will:
• determine effective time management strategies.
• create a time management plan by implementing these strategies.
• submit their time management plan using the Assignment tool.
Unit 4 Course Messages and Email
By the end of this unit, students will:
• determine the appropriate netiquette for online messages in email or other text
message tools.
• send a message to the instructor using the Course Message tool.
