Finally, some commercial experience in China Unicom will be shared.
Evolution of Service Quality Management - Through closed loop automation
- Service assurance is transitioning from operating in silos to being integrated into the full network and service lifecycle through closed-loop automation. This will address issues like separate domains, high monitoring costs, and complex troubleshooting.
- A proposed architecture embeds test instrumentation and monitoring into virtual network functions and the orchestration layer to validate service performance and quality of experience from end to end as new services are provisioned.
- Case studies show how virtual active probes can quickly issue "birth certificates" to certify new virtualized services meet SLAs without disrupting dynamic on-demand networks. This enables agile service assurance for network functions virtualization.

Traditional carriers' transport networks consist of vertically-integrated devices with vendor-proprietary interfaces, that causes "vendor lock in" environment and interferes with adopting software based control and configuration for carriers' transport networks. NTT Communications are trying to adopt disaggregation approach for them to transform our operations by integrating commoditized multi-vendor components and SDN technology.
In this presentation, we will talk about our expectations for disaggregated transport networks and its controller architecture with multiple SDN controllers including open source software. Furthermore, we will show our internal evaluation result of disaggregated transport network feasibility and discuss future development plans.

This talk is about upcoming future of the mobile networks, key technology enabler and how to build your application and service on top of next generation mobile networks. Peng will describe the mobile network trend and why openness will play a critical role going forward. He will also present example of the NFV enabled mobile network architecture, its building blocks and use cases, and introduce Huawei's Open Mobile Foundry platform as a real world example to share some of our valuable experiences in this field with all. Peng Li is a Network Architect and Ecosystem Partnership Manager for Huawei's wireless BU. He has extensive experience on SDN, NFV, network architecture and network protocols. He has spent all his professional career so far on computer networking, mainly with Amber/Nokia networks and Foundry/Brocade before joining Huawei. He co-implemented the industry first full redundancy BGP protocol, and had many years of experience in network protocol development and engineering management for flagship data center routers. Peng has Master's in Computer Engineering from USC, and Bachelor's in EE from Tsinghua University, China.

A leading Tier-1 Operator in APAC was evaluating new technologies to deliver enhanced managed network services for its Enterprise customers. With the growth in the demand for these services driven by the region’s growing consumption of web-based content and applications, the full-fledged telecommunications company embarked on an initiative to enhance the capacity and capabilities of its managed network services, with the aim of positioning itself as the best-in-class provider of next-generation cloud data center services.
As part of this transformation, the Operator identified NFV-based intelligent service orchestration, leveraging SDN and NFV technologies to pioneer the development of a portfolio of managed network services and invited vendors to participate in a Proof of Concept (PoC) to validate solutions that will be able to deliver these capabilities.
In response to the initiative, Anuta Networks in collaboration with the Tier-1 Operator, HPE and Logicalis, a leading IT solutions and managed services provider, conducted a PoC that saw the company validating the first end-to-end Managed Network Service Delivery using the IETF YANG Modeling Framework.
The PoC saw the deployment of Anuta Networks' NFV Orchestrator and VNF Lifecycle Manager - Anuta NCX - which provides carrier-grade NFV orchestration for instantiating, managing, and chaining Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in accordance to IETF’s Management and Orchestration (MANO) guidelines. HPE provided the NFVI including Helion OpenStack, HP Compute, HPE Virtual Router (VRS) and HPE DCN SDN (OEM version of ALU Nuage VSP) controller.
First of its kind, the highly successful PoC demonstrated capabilities of Anuta Networks via its NCX solution to deliver carrier-grade NFV orchestration while dynamically and intelligently provisioning computing, storage and networking resources to enable the Tier 1 Operator to efficiently deliver next-generation cloud services to clients across the region.
Supporting Virtualized Telco Applications with OpenStack

Open Source in a Closed Network
In networks built from proprietary and specialized equipment and software, can we really achieve the touted benefits of applying open source? One year has passed since the experiment called OPNFV was launched as act of faith by a brave few who wanted to accelerate true interoperability, by developing an open and flexible development reference platform to address NFV. In this year we have wrestled with many issues on both the development and business front, as we balance CSP expectations vs CSP realities, cooperation vs differentiation, and try to harness the chaotic open source development model to deliver useful software in a timely manner. This talk will provide an overview of the challenges we faced, our learnings and achievements.

During our pursuit of customer-centric innovations through the NFV evolution in the past few years, Huawei has strived to create long-term values for our telco customers by collaborating very closely. We are now at a stage with clear understanding and are promoting an open solution based on OpenStack. Along the journey, we ve encountered several challenges and identified several opportunities. In this presentation, we d like to share our experience and findings, as well as some of our NFV visions that OpenStack community may be motivated to help evolve the telco industry further.

Open Source in a Closed Network
In networks built from proprietary and specialized equipment and software, can we really achieve the touted benefits of applying open source? One year has passed since the experiment called OPNFV was launched as act of faith by a brave few who wanted to accelerate true interoperability, by developing an open and flexible development reference platform to address NFV. In this year we have wrestled with many issues on both the development and business front, as we balance CSP expectations vs CSP realities, cooperation vs differentiation, and try to harness the chaotic open source development model to deliver useful software in a timely manner. This talk will provide an overview of the challenges we faced, our learnings and achievements.

Keeping OpenStack storage trendy with Ceph and containers
The conventional approach to deploying applications on OpenStack uses virtual machines (usually KVM) backed by block devices (usually Ceph RBD). As interest increases in container-based application deployment models like Docker, it is worth looking at what alternatives exist for combining compute and storage (both shared and non-shared). Mapping RBD block devices directly to host kernels trades isolation for performance and may be appropriate for many private clouds without significant changes to the infrastructure. More importantly, moving away from a virtualization allows for non-block interfaces and a range of alternative models based on file or object.
Attendees will leave this talk with a basic understanding of the storage components and services available to both virtual machines and Linux containers, a view of a several ways they can be combined and the performance, reliability, and security trade-offs associated with those possibilities, and several proposals for how the relevant OpenStack projects (Nova, Cinder, Manila) can work together to make it easy.

Virtual routing platforms allow carriers to take advantage of virtualization benefits while supporting SDN and NFV initiatives. They aim to provide carrier-grade routing functions with performance comparable to physical routers, using the same management systems and consistent behaviors. Virtual platforms are well-suited for new applications where physical routers cannot meet needs, and allow flexible, on-demand scaling and lower costs than physical routers. Both physical and virtual platforms have strengths and can form blended networks, with services placed based on requirements. Infonetics recently found that 35 percent of the worldwide telecom carriers they surveyed are planning to deploy NFV in 2015. Segment routing is a network technology focused on addressing the pain points of existing IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks in terms of simplicity, scale, and ease of operation. It’s a foundation for application engineered routing because it prepares the networks for new business models where applications can direct network behavior.
Segment routing seeks the right balance between distributed intelligence and centralized optimization and programming. It was built for the software-defined networking (SDN) era.
Segment routing enables enhanced packet forwarding behavior. It enables a network to transport unicast packets through a specific forwarding path, other than the normal shortest path that a packet usually takes. This capability benefits many use cases, and you can build those specific paths based on application requirements.
Segment routing uses the source routing paradigm. A node, usually a router but it can also be a switch, a trusted server, or a virtual forwarder running on a hypervisor, steers a packet through an ordered list of instructions, called segments. A segment can represent any instruction, topological or service-based. A segment can have a local semantic to a segment-routing node or global within a segment-routing network. Segment routing allows you to enforce a flow through any topological path and service chain while maintaining per-flow state only at the ingress node to the segment-routing network. To be aligned with modern IP networks, segment routing supports equal-cost multipath (ECMP) by design, and the forwarding within a segment-routing network uses all possible paths, when desired.

An explosion of new over-the-top (OTT) video services and consumer devices is placing huge demand on cable access networks. To compete for new customers and retain the loyalty of existing ones, multiple system operators (MSOs) will need to expand capacity substantially, rolling out new services and gigabit tiers.
As they strive to meet insatiable market demand and stay competitive, MSOs are looking at significant access network capital expenditures (CapEx) increases over the next 5 years - and steadily rising operating expenses (OpEx) due to higher power costs and a larger network footprint. But current integrated Cisco® Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) solutions are limited to supporting only 24 to 32 channels per service group, and they are not designed to support DOCSIS® 3.1 at scale. Using these platforms, MSOs would need to significantly increase CapEx spend in order to compete with gigabit billboard rates and keep pace with growth.
Alternatively, MSOs can use the Cisco cBR-8 Converged Broadband Router, a full-spectrum CCAP-compliant platform that is designed to support DOCSIS 3.1. The Cisco cBR-8 enables cable operators to offer multigigabit broadband and Internet of Everything (IoE) services, and provide a path to virtualization. It empowers MSOs to scale economically to deliver more capacity and best-in-class services with much lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
This white paper examines the consumer trends affecting cable access networks and the projections for how the network and services will evolve in the coming years. It provides a long-term economic analysis of an evolved access network using the Cisco cBR-8, compared with competitive Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) platforms.
