Operations-as-a-Service (OaaS) is
the logical culmination of a set of business and technology trends that have been converging for several years. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and IT Outsourcing (ITO) began in the 1990’s but evolved significantly over time, becoming more commoditised, incorporating sophisticated platforms and bundling more and more services.
More recently, sourcing has blended with various forms of As-a-Service, most notably via integrated, cloud-based applications, or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), alongside increasing levels of
IT infrastructure delivered as-a-Service (IaaS). Advancements in data processing and computing intelligence (including, for example, predicative analytics and robotic process automation) have also become fundamental - allowing for a new class of data-driven business insights. This overall combination of proven business process management disciplines and intelligent, cloud- driven technologies is now known as Operations-as-a-Service.

The Future of Applications: Three Strategies for the High-velocity, Software-...Accenture Technology
A comprehensive analysis of the applications environment—including custom and ERP—in light of two emerging realities facing companies today: the business world is increasingly high-velocity and is software-driven.
Accenture Finds that Vast Majority of Companies are Embracing the Journey to the Cloud but Alignment to Business Strategy Lags
Accenture’s “Cloud in the Boardroom” study found that although there’s a significant uptick in cloud adoption at the enterprise level, companies are missing the full benefit of their cloud adoptions by not factoring their IT implementations into their overall business strategy.
Accenture conducted an online survey, fielded between January and February of 2016, of 1,879 C-level executives of companies across 15 industries in 13 countries. Some key findings include:
- More than 95 percent of respondents have a five-year cloud strategy already in place, however only 38 percent have aligned these plans with overarching business goals.
- Four of five executives reported that less than half of their business functions are currently operated in public cloud, but noted increasing intent on moving more of their operations to the cloud in the coming years.
- 89 percent of respondents agree that implementing cloud strategies is a competitive advantage which allows their companies to leverage innovation through agility.
- While half of respondents cite security as their biggest concern with the public model, more than 80 percent believe public cloud security is more robust and transparent than what they’re able to provide in-house.
“Our research confirms that enterprise clients are overwhelmingly recognizing the value of a Cloud First agenda—leveraging the cloud to bring applications, infrastructure and business processes together and be delivered as-a-Service—as a driver of digital innovation, and they are upfront about the guidance they need in order to move even faster on their journey to the cloud,” said Jack Sepple, senior managing director, Accenture Cloud and Accenture Operations group technology officer. “By taking steps to align their cloud and business strategies and to involve IT more directly in cloud decision-making, companies will be better positioned on their journey to the cloud as the as-a-Service economy matures.”
For any traditional enterprise, digital is the new buzzword with Social computing, Big Data analytics, Cloud enablement, Mobile transformation & Internet of Everything driving every business discussion in every function, be it marketing, supply chain management, production, human resources or finance.
But industry standard SMAC (Social computing, Mobile technologies, Analytics & Cloud computing) led approach has not been a success for the IT industry as it is a bolt-on approach that doesn’t address the fundamental problems faced by a legacy burdened enterprise. That’s the reason SMAC uptake has been relatively modest in the industry with hardly any large services provider coming up with credible answers. Enterprises are plagued with Cost of Modernization, Control of risks attached with modernization and Capital locked in Legacy Application environment.
For most enterprises, the dependence on legacy is paramount and even a small downtime in a critical applications can result in huge revenue losses. So the quality issue of any digitalization initiative has to be met along-with a deep understanding of the domain requirements. Hence an end-to-end partner is needed who has the complete view of the enterprise application landscape, and who understands the deeper issues of control & implementation intricacies.
Digital System Integration (DSI) is HCL Technologies’ answer to a modern corporation’s dilemma in effectively transforming itself from a legacy driven traditional organization to a digitalized corporation with integrated digital systems.
Digitalization is the complete transformation of a business with unprecedented combinations of new technologies to generate revenue and business value. HCL Technologies’ Digital Systems Integration (DSI) aims to enable traditional organizations to compete against “born digital” competitors through a strategy called reborn digitalTM, which effectively analyzes and connects a traditional organization’s legacy systems, assesses its readiness for the digital age, addressing the challenges identified through a set of solutions by taking a consultative approach that creates a complete digital enterprise.

Tremendous value lies in how organizations leverage ecosystems to deliver outcomes and solutions through platforms. Some pioneering communications, media and technology companies are already evaluating how they can participate in existing ecosystems. A few are even pursuing more valuable ecosystem leadership roles.
The good news is that companies don't need to build platforms to compete in the platform economy. But they must begin to stake their claim now with three key actions, or risk being marginalized.

Flexible Cloud-Based Application Management
For today's companies, scaling operational skills and resources in line with business expansion is a constant challenge. The Cloud can offer greater application flexibility, but traditional application management models focus on stability, fixed capacity and service-level agreements, all of which are not conducive to cloud-based environments. In addition, operational support structures are commonly static and not designed for accelerated response times and dynamic changes.
A cloud-based support environment can help your company change and innovate quickly to meet your business needs.

The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.
