2. Brexit and the Digital Single Market
Prime Minister Theresa May:
“On digital, the UK will not be part of
the EU’s Digital Single Market, which
will continue to develop after our
withdrawal from the EU.
“This is a fast evolving, innovative
sector, in which the UK is a world
leader.
“So it will be particularly important to
have domestic flexibility, to ensure
the regulatory environment can
always respond nimbly and
ambitiously to new developments.”
3. The Digital Charter: key principles
The internet should be free and open
Personal data should be respected and used
appropriately
People should understand the rules that apply
to them when they are online
Protections should be in place to keep people
safe online, especially children
The social and economic benefits brought by
new technologies should be fairly shared
The same rights that people have offline must
be protected online
5. Wider differences in government
Ambitious about what the UK can do in the digital space More cautious approach
6. IP-based authentication
Greater anonymity and privacy for the user
Less scope for personalisation and not a seamless
experience for the user
Anonymity makes it harder for publishers to tackle
piracy of their content
7. What are the alternatives?
Balancing privacy concerns with providing a seamless and personalised user experience
