As part of Open Access Week 2017, I spoke about how we can use OER to make a difference both in Australia and globally. I discuss the opportunity to progress the UN SDGs using OER as our vehicle. I ask how we can use our current positions - in Universities, in Government, as public citizens of Australia, to collectively make a difference.

• Content can be easily adaptions into other languages
• Disability access can be facilitated
• OER supports the creation of localised versions of content
• If OER was the norm access to knowledge and education
would be more inclusive and equitable

• Making “disposable assignments a thing of the past
means more time can be spent trying to solve world
issues
• Engaging students in real world problems is a good
thing! Students can contribute to improving curriculum,
work on complex and authentic problems such as the

building, revising and creating community around OER.

10. The Future of OER
• The OER movement is gaining momentum in Australia – but there is still
work to be done – such as my PhD research – I want to know the best
and most effective way to sustain open access to cultural and knowledge
goods.
• In Australia we are relatively fortunate – we have broad access to a
range of cultural and knowledge goods through our University
subscriptions and licenses
• OER is starting to be more widely used and adopted
• We have some freedom to create our own teaching content and are
surrounded by colleagues who support new and innovative ways of
teaching and learning.
• As educators, librarians, learning designers, academics and researchers
we can start to take steps to progress the SDGs through advocacy,
content creation and research using OERs as our vehicle.
