Development of a research project repository
The advances of technology resulting in the proliferation of mobile devices have changed the way we live and have necessitated the restructuring of the educational system. This can be employed to aid student’s participation in research studies. This study aims at promoting-research in universities amongst students by giving them the opportunity to exercise their scholarly abilities, easy access to research projects carried out by other students, collaboration with other students with similar research inclinations as well as gain visibility before the school management or companies interested in granting scholarships to outstanding works. This project is implemented using JavaScript, HTML and CSS for the front-end; Node.js, a JavaScript framework for the back-end and MongoDB for the database. It is a web application that enables the students to upload their research works, view the research of others and collaborate with peers. This system has a high potential to enhance student participation in universities’ research studies.

Abstract: Open Science is en vogue – especially after Carlos Moedas, EU-Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, has outlined his vision for Europe along the lines of ‘open innovation, open science, open to the world’. Open science describes the transition of ‘publishing as fast as possible’ towards ‘sharing knowledge as fast as possible’. Several reasons explain the move towards openness, it is expected, for example, that open science will increase the efficiency of science. Of course, digital media and web-based environments are keys to this development, but it also requires a systemic change to transform open science from a nice-to-have-feature into the default way of performing research. Altmetrics, i.e. social media-based metrics, are often considered drivers of open science and essential tools for changing the reward system in science. When looking closer, though, severe tensions between features as well as expectations of open science and altmetrics become apparent. The talk will argue that open science only can enfold its potential if ‘openness’ is fully embraced and supported by open metrics.

Abstract: Imagine YOUR research some time in the future! Abandon all preconceptions, and imagine an idealised way of how research might be done in the future. What does it look like? Is the knowledge you’ll create in the future constrained to your pencil scribbled notebook, to your lab, and to the pages of an elite journal? Or does it flow seamlessly across disciplines and collaborative teams. Is the knowledge you generate in the future categorised, labelled and published according to rigid disciplinary taxonomy, or is it being applied by people you never met and may never meet. Is the fruit of your labour so discoverable, accessible and re-usable that it advances knowledge, fixes real world problems in research directions that you never thought of possible anticipated? And imagine all that happens even while you are sleeping, but attributing full credit to you? That future may become the default setting sooner than you might guess.
The presentation will briefly introduce Open Science in the context of an open, transparent, re-usable and reproducible research lifecycle, and present strategic and career arguments, such as why research of relevance to societal challenges can not afford not to adopt Open Science as the default setting.
