Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

9. Colicky Baby
• Newborns are fussy and will cry.
• Colic is uncontrollable crying in a baby. It’s not known what
causes colic.
Some theories of excessive crying are:
• Drinking milk too quickly in a bottle-fed baby – you may
find it helpful to try different nipple sizes.
–
–
–
–
–
–
Hunger or thirst
Tiredness
Lack of contact – some babies want to be cuddled all the time
Temperature- the baby may be too hot or too cold
Itchiness – itchy clothes or labels, or eczema
Pain – there may be an identifiable source of pain, such as a
diaper rash
10. The Happiest Baby on the Block
• The 5s’ is Harvey Karp method based The
Happiest Baby on the Block
• If you do them all in order and all right and
“works for 98% of all babies”
• The key is going through all of these as steps
11. What are the 5s’?

5.
Swaddle the baby
Side or stomach position
Shushing
Swinging
Sucking
Why do you think these work?
12. Why the 5s’ work
• Harvey Karp refers to the first three months
after being born as the ‘fourth trimester’
• The 5s’ is a way of recreating that sense of
security and what they know from the womb.
• Remember, your confidence in doing the 5s’
with a parent of a crying child will help the
baby to stop crying and also will help the
parents learn how easy it is.
13. Let’s practice the order!
• The order that you do these are important so
let’s practice

16. Breastfeeding
• In the class we talk about positioning and the
use of each position
• Tonight focus on latching
17. What is latching?
• Definition: When a baby opens up his mouth as
big as a yawn and with his tongue takes in the
lower part of a moms areola and the whole
nipple.
• The most important part of successful
breastfeeding is the latch. If your baby is not
properly latched on to your breast, feedings could
be painful. There are specific techniques that can
be used when latching the baby to the breast.
19. Steps of getting a good latch?
1. Moms must sit or lie supported by pillows. Be
sure they are comfortable.
2. Baby’s tongue and lower lip need to pull in the
breast. The bottom lip needs to be as far away
from the base of the nipple.
3. The nipple should be drawn in to the back of his
mouth.
4. Baby’s tongue will massage the bottom side of
Moms breast sucking milk from the milk ducts.
20. How do you break the latch?
• The baby, when latched correctly, will create a
strong seal.
• Usually when the baby is done, he will stop
sucking and the seal will break.
• If the baby doesn’t latch, mom can put her
finger up in the baby's mouth between the
gums, breaking the seal and the latch.
21. Repercussions of not having a good
latch
• The baby will not have the suction to draw the
milk out of the breast.
• Moms nipples will become sore
• Baby will not gain weight which is so critical in
the first 2 weeks when breastfeeding is being
established.
• Baby will be fussy and prefer the bottle since
that is much easier.
22. Helping moms position to get a good
latch
Need a volunteer!
1. Make sure mom needs to be comfortable
2. Her back must be hunched.
3. The baby must be supported to the mom and
not the mom to the baby
4. Pulling down the baby's bottom lip and placing
the bottom portion of the areola and nipple in
her mouth.
5. Baby’s head must be supported.
24. Raffle Time!
• 2 copies of Happiest Baby on the Block
