Nazli Ighani is a 4th grade teacher at Shanghai American School. The open house is intended to help parents understand the work their children will be doing, the expectations for students, and how to support their child's learning. The core subjects are readers workshop, writers workshop, math, science, and social studies. There are also specials classes in PE, art, music, and technology. Reading and writing are taught using workshop models with mini lessons and independent/group work. Math modules cover topics like place value and operations. Science units focus on structures and functions, earth processes, and energy. Social studies covers geography, ancient and modern China.

The goal of our reading program is to foster a love of
reading. We do this through:

Each Readers Workshop session begins with a mini
lesson that focuses on a reading strategy.
Students then read independently and practice the
skills from the mini-lesson. This may include:
