CURRICULAM
PRINCIPLES
INTRODUCTION
“Social studies curriculam may be considered as a tool in the hands of the artist.” Curriculam is
the pivot and the hub around which all activities in the school revolve. It is the sum total of
experiences that the child receives in and outside the classroom through the study of different
subjects, through community relationships, through library, workshops, sports, and games etc. It
means of enabling the child to adjust himself to his environment. It is the ‘ wrap’ and ‘woof’ of
the process of education.
The concept of curriculam has changed from time to time. The term ‘curriculam’ is derived from
the Latin word ‘currere’ which means a running course. Since society has placed more
responsabilities on its schools, the meaning of the running course is no more appropriate for the
curriculam. Arthur .J. Lewis and Mid Alice(1972) defined curriculam is their book “Supervision for
Improved Instruction” as
“a set of intentions about oppurtunities for engagement of persons to be educated with other
persons and with things [all bearers of information process techniques and values] in certain
arrangements of time and space.”
Curriculam in school studies is that part of the school curriculam which includes subject matter
and activities that enable the child to acquire an understanding of human relationships,
knowledge of the environment, dedication to the basic principles and values of the society and a
commitment to participate in the process through which the society is maintained and improved.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
In order to have a curriculam the decision has to be made about selection of topics, issues and
activities. In order to achieve the goals of curriculam it is necessary that important issues in
curriculamshould be discussed so that guidelines may be available to curriculam planners, school
administrators, school teachers, school students and their parent for making decision about
school education.
Curriculam development is the most comprehensive term which includes planning,
implementation and evaluation of curriculam. Curriculam development is mainly concerned with
the design of plans for actual teaching learning situations. It is based up on the broad goals and
identifies ways to translate those goals into a coordinated and coherent program of learning
experiences.
OBJECTIVES
1. To find out the significance principles of curriculam development.
2. To understand the educational needs in curriculam.
Curriculam Development & Principles
The term ‘curriculam’ is derived from the Latin word ‘currere’ which means a running course.
Since society has placed more responsabilities on its schools, the meaning of the running course
is no more appropriate for the curriculam. Arthur .J. Lewis and Mid Alice(1972) defined
curriculam in their book “Supervision for Improved Instruction” as
“a set of intentions about oppurtunities for engagement of persons to be educated with other
persons and with things[all bearers of information process techniques and values] in creation
arrangements of time and space”
Oliva defined “curriculam is a plan or programme for all experiences which the learner
encounters under the direction of the school.”
Categories of Curriculam
Curriculam may be put into four categories. They are
I. Curriculam as subjects & subject matter
II. Curriculam as objectives
III. Curriculam as programme
IV. Curriculam as personal experiences of the learner
Every teacher has a series of beliefs about what schools what ought to do, a set of values
about the most desirable outcomes from schooling and some very clear ideas about kinds of
the students the school should procedure. There are four dominant views about curriculam.
They are
i. Humanism
ii. Developmentalism
iii. Social meteorism
iv. Social efficiency
There are many schemes that define the content of the curriculam but there are two large and
loosely organized families that can encircle most of these schemes. One family is child centered
curriculam whose great exponent is John Dewey. The other family is discipline-centered
curriculam whose great exponent is Jerome Brunner.
Curriculam development is the most comprehensive term which includes planning,
implementation and evaluation of curriculam. Beane, Toepfer & Alessi[1986] define curriculam
development in their book “curriculam planning and Development” curriculam development is
mainly concerned with the design of plans for actual teaching learning situations. It is based on
the goals into a coordinated and coherent program of learning experiences.
Principles of Curriculam
Peter.F.Oliva[1988] in his book “Developing the curriculam has suggested ten principles for
curriculam development. They are:
1. Change in both inevitable and necessary, for it is through change that life forms grow and
development.
2. A school curriculam not only reflects but is a product of its time.
3. Curriculam changes made at an earlier period of time can exist concurrently with never
curriculam changes at a later period of time.
4. Curriculam change results from changes in people.
5. Curriculam change is effected as a result of cooperative endeavour on the part of groups.
6. Curriculam development is basically a decision making process.
7. Curriculam development is a never ending process.
8. Curriculam development is a comprehensive process.
9. Systematic curriculam development is more effective than trial and error
10. The curriculam planners starts from where the curriculam is just as the teacher starts from
where the student is.
Thus if all these principles are kept in consideration while curriculam planners work in
cooperation with school teachers, students and parents. It is expected a good curriculam may be
developed for the time being but it will require continuous revision and removal.
CONCLUSION
The concept of curriculam has changed from time to time. The traditional books on curriculam
and the modern books on curriculam will realize a great difference in the concept of curriculam.
Curriculam means “curriculam embodies all the teaching-learning experiences guided and
directed by the school. The principles are kept in consideration while curriculam planners work
in cooperation with school teachers, students and parents, it is expected a good curriculam may
be developed for the time being but it will require continuous revision and removal.
