Volcanos are formed when molten rock, or magma, flows out of the earth's surface through cracks and fissures caused by the movement of tectonic plates. There are three main types of volcanos: active volcanos that frequently erupt such as Mount Etna and Mount Fujiyama; extinct volcanos that will not erupt again like Kilimanjaro; and dormant volcanos that were once active but have not erupted recently, though could become active again in the future including Vesuvius.
