Introduction
Library has a key role in scheme of Education. Classroom teaching must
be supplemented with the dissemination of knowledge through library.
Different types of books in Social science library can be quite helpful to the
students in completing the work assigned to them and to tackie all types of
problems emerging from different topics prescribed in their syllabus. Classroom
teaching many a times leaves many gaps and doubts. They can be removed if
students work use of good books available in the library. Social science teacher
can help the students in the selection of good books in the library.
A Social science library, is not only a source of learning and inspiration
for students but also serves the need of the teachers. A teacher must keep his
knowledge ever fresh and up-to-date, this is possible by making a free use of
mathematics library. He can also learn latest methods of teaching social science
from the new books available in the library. Thus a good social science library
helps to keep the lamp of historical knowledge burning so as to kindle light in
the minds of the students as also the teachers.
Social science is quite a vast subject. A social science teacher should not
follow only the text-book and be must study some standard books from the
library.
It will provided him a deeper insight into the subject and through
2
command of the same.

Library Facilities in schools
In our schools there are two types of libraries:
(a) General school library
(b) Social science Department library.
(a) General school library
In most of our schools there is a general school library which
contains books and magazines an all subjects. Then there should be separate
sections for social science books. For the teachers there should be good books
on methodology of teaching, contributions of various historians and important
historical personalities. For students there should be books on recreational
activities, well selected text-books, some reference books and other historical
books
(b) Social Science Department Library
Subject to the availability of resources there should be a separate
social science library. It may be housed in the social science room. The
librarian or the person in charge of it should classify the books properly so that
students do not find and difficulty in getting the books issued. Social science
teacher himself should remain in touch with latest books or magazines on the
subject and make additions in the library. A number of copies of good books
should be purchased.

the school family. It helps the teacher to Enrich curriculum and facilitates
personal and professional reading. It supports the students to gain meaningful
experience in reading thinking and forming independent Judgements. To the
community, it provides for recreational and hobby interests. Library can thus
Justify its position as a basic tool for instructional programme. Due to the above
reasons library occupies a unique position in modern school and it cannot be
replaced by any other agency.
The potent functions of library are :

history.

interest in the subject.
Thus, it is essential that all out efforts be made to establish a separate
social science library in every school.
