This document discusses hypoxia, or lack of oxygen availability in tissues. It defines different types of hypoxia including hypoxemic hypoxia, anemic hypoxia, stagnant hypoxia, and histotoxic hypoxia. Acceptable ranges of arterial oxygen levels are provided for adults, children, and newborns. Mild to moderate postoperative hypoxemia is common and often underestimated, and can lead to increased morbidity. More severe hypoxemia risks brain injury, cardiac arrest, and impaired wound healing and resistance to infection.
