Save Precious Fresh Water on
Offshore Oil & Gas Drilling Rigs
Application ProfileApplication Profile
6. • Offshore oil rigs operate in harsh, isolated locations where fresh water
supplies from shore or tankers can be very unreliable. The cost of fresh
water on these rigs is very expensive. On-board fresh water storage
capacity is typically only around a weeks supply.
• Large, heavy-duty brakes used on offshore platform draw works and
anchor winches require significant amounts of water to cool the units
during operation. Most brake designs use cast iron water jackets to
circulate water through the brake for cooling.
• Wichita engineers utilized cutting edge technologies and state-of-the-art
composite materials to develop a corrosion-resistant, salt water friendly
jacket design for use in their line of AquaMaKKs™ clutches and brakes.
• New jackets provide Improved channeled water flow - achieved via
grooved design molded into the jacket for enhanced cooling capability.
• Composite material reduces overall clutch weight – critical for weight
restricted applications.

Pedestal Cranes
Problem:
A leading global crane OEM needed high quality limit switches
for use on its line of heavy lift offshore cranes with lifting
capacities up to 2000 tons. The specialized cranes are mounted
on a kingpost and pedestal that supports the crane’s rotating
upper structure. Each crane features a primary (main) hoist and
auxiliary hoists with lower lifting capacities than the main hoist.
Solution:
The OEM selected Stromag Series 51 limit switches based on
the unit’s high quality and competitive cost. The switches are
installed on each of the crane’s hoists as safety devices that set
the precise travel range of the hoist. The switches ensure the
safe stopping of the cranes cable (rope) preventing potential
load and rig damage. The upper limit of hoist travel is set using
a hook-operated limit switch. A limit switch mounted to the cable
drum sets the hoist’s lower limit of travel.

Gantry Cranes
Problem:
A reliable limit switch solution was needed for use on offline
activity cranes (OACs) installed on oil and gas drilling rigs.
Positioned away from the paths of the platform’s heavy lift
cranes to avoid interference, OACs lift and rack drill pipe, tubing
and casing. The gantry crane’s trolley system combines lifting
and lateral motion to save time and increase productivity. The
limit switches provide safe emergency stopping of the crane’s
hook as it raises and lowers during operation.
Solution:
Stromag Series 51 limit switches were the ideal choice to meet
the crane application requirements. These geared cam limit
switches are universal, mechanical switchgear. They are often
used where angles or distances cannot be limited directly by
switchgear, but only indirectly on the basis of the measured
angle of rotation such as limiting the hook lift of a crane hoist.

58. Refinery Vertical Turbine
Pumps
Problem:
Vertical turbine style pumps are widely used in refinery
applications to lift fluids from sumps, pits or tanks. These pumps
have a shaft that extends down inside a pipe and connects to a
series of stacked turbine impellers, each nested inside a bell
housing. During operation, fluid is drawn up the pipe from the
suction created by the rotating impellers. After extended use, the
impeller blades become worn which creates a gap between the
blade tips and the bell housings – reducing the pump’s
efficiency.
Solution:
TB Wood’s introduced the AVS Series coupling specifically to
improve vertical turbine pump efficiency. The AVS (Adjustable
Vertical Spacer) coupling connects the motor to the long impeller
shaft. A threaded adjustment nut allows operators to increase
suction by drawing the worn blades snuggly back into the
housings.

Petrobras refinery utilizing more than 150 centrifugal pumps,
increasing the MTBF (mean time between failures) of the
pump bearings became a priority. Significant time and cost
savings can be achieved if bearing oil doesn’t need to be
changed at every scheduled maintenance interval.
Solution:
Based on its solid reputation along with its extensive design
and manufacturing expertise in bearing isolator/seal
technologies, Lamiflex was selected to manufacture a new
isolator design under a Petrobras patent.

An engineering firm that specializes in environmental
assessment, clean up and monitoring of oil and gas exploration
sites needed a new pipe coupling solution for use on their
systems. Their existing well head monitoring system, used for
monitoring water and ground decontaminants, utilized a “hard
piped” design which prevented the system from being easily
removed and relocated.
Solution:
Guardian engineers developed a modified Quik-Joint steel
compression pipe reducer coupling to easily connect and
disconnect a 3" pipe to a 3/4" pipe in a compact length.
• Electrostatic-coated, air and water tight
