3. Hydro-Mulchers
Problem:
Bowie Industries, a major hydro-seeder manufacturer, was
looking for an electric clutch solution that could better
accommodate the higher torque requirements on their larger
models. The new electric clutches would replace existing
inconvenient, manually-operated clutches.
Solution:
Warner Electric engineers developed a modified SF-825 clutch
which allowed the equipment operators to remotely
engage/disengage either of two clutches (for the mixer and the
ejection pump) as needed. Unique input and output hubs were
developed to accommodate the two slightly different clutch
applications
• The clutch’s dynamic torque required 127 ft. lbs. at 1680 RPM,
and needed to be able to dynamically cycle the ejection pump.
• The mixer clutch had to handle breaking up mulch bales and
mixing the material with seed, fertilizer and water.

4. Mulch Blower
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of industrial sweepers and brooms
required an economical flywheel coupling solution for a line of
road construction sweepers. Dual hydraulic pumps, horizontally
mounted to each other off the rear of the machine’s engine,
drive the propulsion of the machine and control the operation
and speed of the broom and various other components.
Solution:
Guardian engineers worked directly with the OEM’s engine
distributor to configure a combination coupling and mount kit
that installed easily onto the distributor’s engine package.

5. Aircraft Deicing Truck
Problem:
Deicing trucks were originally equipped to spray a mixture of
water and Type 1 deicing glycol. New procedures were put in
place that required the aircraft to be sprayed with Type 1 to
remove ice, then sprayed with Type 4 to prevent re-icing.
Solution:
Trucks needed to be retrofit with new, dual-function piston
pumps which required a clutch with a higher torque capacity

6. Street Sweeper
Problem:
A major manufacturer of street sweepers required reliable
electric linear actuators to raise and lower twin 36" diameter
rotating steel wire side brooms. Electric actuators offer many
advantages over hydraulic models for this application including
weight savings, enhanced mounting flexibility, elimination of
hose confinements and potential fluid leaks.
Solution:
Warner Linear supplied B-Track K2XE electric actuators to
meet the application specifications. Units feature an
externally-mounted, adjustable non-contact magnetic switch.
The two-position switch allows the operator to raise and lower
both side brooms from inside the cab.

7. Fire Engine Ladder
Access System
Problem:
Rugged-duty electric actuators were required for ladder lift
devices utilized on fire engines and pumpers. The lifts
automatically lowers aluminum ladders to a more accessible
height for easier removal. A control switch activates two
electric actuators that power the lift system.
Solution:

8. Emergency Vehicle Oxygen
Tank Lift
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of fire and safety equipment required
an extremely reliable electric actuator for use in their oxygen
tank lift systems. The lifts are utilized on emergency vehicles,
including ambulances, to safely raise and lower oxygen tanks
which can weigh over 80lbs. when full.
Solution:

9. Fire Tanker Dump Valve
& Portable Tank Lift
Problem:
Reliable electric actuators were required for use on fire tanker
dump valves and truck-mounted portable tank lift systems.
Powered by a single actuator, remotely-activated dump valves
allow firefighters to be positioned away from the dangerous
chute area during water dumping operations. The portable
tank lift system, powered by a pair of linear actuators, lets
firefighters conveniently access the on-board, side-mounted
portable tank without excessive stretching or straining.

10. All-Terrain Vehicles
Problem:
A leading all-terrain vehicle manufacturer needed reliable
actuators to raise and lower a dump box, combined with CAN
Bus capable controllers that would allow the actuator control to
be integrated into the vehicle’s overall system monitoring and
provide feedback displayed on an on-board digital screen.
Solution:

compatible with the customer’s Bus communication network.

raise and lower the dump box on it’s new ATV.

12. ATV Dump Boxes
Problem:
Many ATV models now come equipped with convenience
features including powered dump boxes. Linear actuators allow
users to empty their dump box without the physical exertion of
raising the beds manually. This challenging application requires
an actuator that can fit within the tight confines of an ATV
chassis, move heavy loads with ease, and resist rust and dirt.
Solution:

13. Snow Plows
Problem:
Snow plows operate in harsh environments where cold
temperatures, combined with the corrosive effects of wet snow
and salt, would destroy a typical electric actuator. The actuator
must be able to withstand the constant bouncing of the plow
blade during operation, maintaining its position while
accommodating varying snow loads. Units must also be able to
absorb impacts from objects hidden in the plow’s path.
Solution:
Robust Warner Linear H-Track actuators, with a force rating of
4,800 lbs. and an operating temperature range down to -40˚F (-
40˚C), are ideally suited to handle these difficult conditions. The
patented H-Track is a unique electric actuator with self-contained
hydraulic actuation. Units are immune to vibrational drifting and
hydraulically self-lock, while holding its position without power.

14. Salt Spreader
Problem:
A leading salt spreader manufacturer needed a reliable electric
actuator to drive the spreader wheel on their line of pickup
truck mounted spreaders. The actuators allow the operator to
adjust the flow/spread rate and spin speed of the salt spreader
wheel from the cab.
Solution:
Warner Linear K2RA rotary actuators were selected for the

15. Vehicle-Mounted
Arrow Boards
Problem:
The leading manufacturer of highway safety and traffic control
products required reliable linear actuators for use with their
vehicle mounted arrow boards. The actuator allows emergency
repair crews to remotely rotate the lighted arrow board 90
degrees, from a horizontal (transport) position to a vertical
orientation, or a full 180 degrees from front facing to rear facing.
Solution:
Warner Linear K2 actuators were selected to power the arrow
boards which can be as large as 48" x 96". Engineered for
rugged duty, the K2 has demonstrated superior performance
over competitive models in life cycle testing.

16. Grain Truck Chute Opener
Problem:
Robust electric actuators were needed by a manufacturer of
remote-controlled chute openers installed on grain hauling
trucks. While unloading seed, drivers typically must hurry from
grain bins or air seeder tanks to get to the back of their trucks in
order to manually adjust flow at the grain chute. This process
can be dangerous, especially at night.
Solution:
Durable Warner Linear K2 actuators were selected for this
challenging application. The remotely-activated chute opener,
powered by a single electric actuator, allows drivers to be
positioned near or on grain bins or air seeders while remotely
adjusting grain flow of the truck chute.

17. Golf Carts
Problem:
A major US golf cart manufacturer needed a drop-in
replacement braking solution for a line of golf carts. The carts
feature a convenient parking brake mounted to the back of
the motor that automatically engages when the vehicle is
stopped. The existing brakes were failing prematurely due to
water and corrosion.
Solution:
After careful in-depth evaluation of the existing brake design,
Matrix engineers developed a modified spring-applied,
electromagnetically-released 1EB Series brake to solve the
customer’s braking problems. The IP67 rated brakes are fully
enclosed for protection from water and corrosion. Based on the
successful testing (in-house and in the field), along with the low
cost of ownership, the OEM ultimately selected the Matrix
solution as the replacement parking brake for its cart fleet.

18. Airport Truck-Mounted
Baggage Conveyors
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of airport ground support equipment
needed a unique coupling solution for its line of mobile
baggage and cargo conveyors. The diesel- or electric powered
belt loaders support a wide range of commercial aircraft. The
coupling is positioned between the drive engine/motor and a
hydraulic pump that raises and lowers the conveyor belt ramp.
Solution:
The OEM determined that unique Gear Grip couplings
available only from Guardian Couplings, with a large 7.5
degrees of
angular misalignment, met its application requirements.

20. Garment Racks for Trucks

Custom Bearing Assembly
Problem:
A regional conveyor OEM needed a bearing solution to
replace failing bearings on their rack systems used in
garment/uniform delivery trucks. The failures occurred
because the solid plastic roller/bushing very quickly became
worn and began to fail in the field. Repair of the current design
required a very time consuming disassembly of the system
that also forced some system components to be scrapped.
Solution:
After careful review of the application, Kilian engineers quickly
designed a custom, double-row ball bearing assembly
integrated into a housing made with an engineered plastic
selected for durability.
• Integrated set screw ensures proper alignment to the rack
arms, smooth rolling performance, and easy, quick
maintenance.
