Golf Course Wastewater
Filtration System
Problem:
The Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club in the United Arab Emirates
had been getting complaints about the quality of the recycled
wastewater used to spray the greens on the club’s 18-hole golf
course. The problem was that the sewage treatment plant was
subjected to a load twice the size it was designed to handle.
Solution:
The solution to the problem was a microfiltering process from
Huber, a global leader in wastewater treatment equipment. The
filtration machines are equipped with disc filters that can be
retrofitted to accommodate increased wastewater loads.
The filter discs are arranged horizontally and rotate on central
shafts powered by Bauer BF Series shaft-mounted geared
geared motors.

Wastewater Membrane
Filtration System
Problem:
Huber, a global leader in water treatment equipment, was
looking for a powerful and durable drive motor for its membrane
filtration process machines. The company’s equipment helps
provide people with clean water by making the best possible use
of existing reserves of drinking water. The machines not only
remove solid materials from the water, but also help to reduce
contamination with bacteria and germs. These ultra-filter plants
are designed to recycle liquid waste to provide service water.
Solution:
Based on years of successful collaboration, Huber selected
Bauer BG Series helical geared motors with a straight-gear
configuration. The robust gearing, compact cast housing, and
the high-efficiency motors made the BG units the ideal choice.
Units are completely enclosed, sealed against dust and
moisture.

Wastewater Screeners
Problem:
As China prepared for the 2008 Olympics, two large-scale
sewage treatment plants were built in the Beijing area to meet
the government requirement that 100% of the wastewater
produced must be cleaned. Huber, a large global water
treatment OEM, needed reliable geared motors for the
22 machines delivered for the mechanical pre-cleaning and
fine screening of the wastewater, along with the world’s largest
membrane bio-reactor.
Solution:
Huber selected rugged Bauer BF Series shaft-mounted geared
motors to help keep things moving. The units supplied feature a
brake that is flange-mounted in the fine screen.
• Wear sleeve and spray ensure leak-free performance
• Complies with NA and International standards, including
NEMA, IEC, CSA and CE

Wastewater Screening Plant
Problem:
A robust geared motor was needed for the 23 meter long
screening plant in Filderstadt-Bonlanden, Germany. With its
perforated plate screens for the treatment of water from
combined sewers and rainwater, it is probably the longest
screening plant in Europe. It was installed in an existing rain
overflow basin to clean combined sewer overflow of floating
and suspended substances.
Solution:
The plant is driven by a compact Bauer BK70 helical bevel
geared motor with right angled gear output. The motor has
protection of class IP68 and can operate underwater in
channels.
• Hardened wear sleeve and spray ring ensure leak-free
performance
• Complies with NA and International standards, including
NEMA, IEC, CSA and CE

Wastewater Sedimentation Tank
Problem:
The Houtrust wastewater treatment plant located in the
Netherlands was built in 1967 and needed to be refurbished to be
in line with current environmental regulations. Included in the
maintenance project was the replacement of a geared motor that
drives the chainwheel in one of its sedimentation tanks. The
original geared motor required a high degree of maintenance,
demanding the tank’s basin be emptied twice a year.
Solution:
Delfluent, the plant operator, contacted Bauer Gear Motor, based
on Bauer’s proven track record of developing geared motors for
challenging conditions.
• Bauer supplied a BK70 bevel geared motor with Im2 corrosion
protection capable of operating continuously underwater. Bauer
moved to a multi-stage geared motor from two, single-stage
gears. The simplified solution made future maintenance easier.

Shipboard Water
Treatment System
Problem:
Huber SE, located in Germany, designs and builds shipboard
water treatment systems. A gear motor was needed to drive
their state-of-the-art cruise ship system which combines the on-
board treatment of blackwater, greywater and kitchen
wastewater together with degreased bilge water in a single
reactor.
Solution:
Huber supplied two perforated screen systems fitted with Bauer
BF Series geared motor drives. The Bauer units feature a
hardened wear sleeve and spray ring at the rotor seal which
allows for reduced sump capacity, reliable lubrication and many
years of leak-free performance.
• Complies with NA and International standards, including
NEMA, IEC, CSA, and CE
• Corrosion protection CORO1, CORO2, CORO3

9. Wastewater Treatment Plant
Pump Systems
Problem:
A major metropolitan wastewater treatment plant that
processes 275 million gallons daily, had been experiencing
premature failure of its couplings due to their inability to
withstand UV exposure and seasonal temperature changes.
Solution:
TB Wood’s supplied DuraFlex couplings with elastomeric
material that is specially formulated to stand up to UV
radiation. The polyurethane material provides superior
chemical, dynamic, and weathering properties.
• Couplings controlled vibration, minimized misalignment,
and reduced maintenance costs
• No need for re-alignment or lubrication
• Accommodate high shock loads in 24/7/365 operation

10. Water Pumping Station
Problem:
Engineers at a large raw water pumping station in Malaysia
asked TB Wood’s to help solve severe vibration problems
with the existing 4-section U-joint, vertical drivetrains on nine
pumps in their station.
Solution:
TB Wood’s provided a custom-designed 3-section, Form-Flex
composite driveshaft connected to form a 4-story drivetrain.
• Composite tubes weigh up to 80% less than steel
• 200HP pumps rated at 710 RPM
• Upper and lower shaft sections used 7" dia. tubing, the
center section used 14" tubing to span center-floor bearing
location where vibration had been most severe
• 4 of 9 vertical shaft systems replaced to date

Water Treatment Plant
Problem:
A midwestern water treatment facility needed a reliable
replacement clutch solution for use on a series of electric motor
driven pumps connected to a common manifold. Backstopping
clutches are installed on each pump to prevent backflow when
one or more of the pumps is shut down. The problem was that
the existing competitor backstopping clutches were wearing out
too quickly, and the replacement lead time from the
manufacturer was too long.
Solution:
Formsprag supplied Model HSB-600 high-speed backstopping
clutches with a torque capacity of 2,250 lb.ft. (3060 Nm).
HSB models are comprised of standard FSO clutch with the
addition of an oil reservoir. Units features PCE®
sprags with
Formchrome®
and Formsprag “Free-action” retainers.
Optional torque arms were also included.

12. Application Profile
Wastewater Plant
Problem:
A global pump OEM contacted various backstopping clutch
suppliers as they were experiencing problems with pumps at a
wastewater facility in Madagascar. The pumps, on a common
manifold, were rotating backward when their respective drive
motors were not powered up.
Solution:
Ultimately, HSB backstopping clutches from Formsprag were
selected over competitive models based on rapid responsiveness,
superior product quality and a long supply history. Formsprag
supplied Model HSB-900 clutches, with a torque capacity of
18,000 lb.ft. (24,480 Nm). HSB units are comprised of standard
FSO clutch with the addition of an aluminum cast oil reservoir
with cooling fins. HSB models have a spacer replacing the seal
at the reservoir end to permit free oil flow between the clutch
and reservoir.
