This document discusses mixing technologies from Philadelphia Mixing Solutions for blending and mixing fluids in storage tanks. It describes several types of tank mixers, including side-entry mixers, swivel-angle mixers, and fixed-angle mixers. It emphasizes the importance of fluid motion and effective mixing for tasks like blending, temperature uniformity, and preventing sediment. The mixers are designed for reliability, safety, and minimizing leaks.

Vertical Cylindrical Steel Storage Tanks
Corrosion is a prime cause of deterioration of steel storage tank and accessories.
Locating and Evaluating the extent of corrosion is therefore a major reason for inspection.

Effective Mixing
1. Basic Sediment
& Water(BS&W) Prevention
Provide a focused flow across the tank floor
such that the complete floor is “swept” and
sedimentation and water is homogenized
in the crude oil. By effectively sweeping
the floor it will allow for better “water draw”
of free water prior to mixing.
2. Blending
Mix two or more components to obtain a
homogeneous blend in a specific amount of
time to defined requirements demands
complete bottom-to-top-to-bottom turnover.
3. Homogeneity
Maintain homogeneity of refinery finished,
intermediate products, or chemical plant feed
stocks to ensure uniform specification. This
demands completed movement throughout the
tank with bottom-to-top-to-bottom turnover, as well
as circulation around the tank. This ensures that
the media at the bottom, middle, and top is uniform.
4. Temperature Uniformity
Aid heat transfer while heating or cooling or to
maintain temperature uniformity complete fluid
motion where bottom-to-top-to-bottom turnover
would normally be required. Positioning of the
mixers relative to the heating elements is also
important to obtain the desired process results.
5. Crude Oil/Optimization
Enhancement/Upgrading
This could be enhancement/optimization/
upgrading of different crude oils to achieve
a certain specification of Sulphur Content,
Density, or Viscosity to satisfy a certain
refining recipe.
How Does It Work?
Standard Mixer Propellers generate
wide flow patterns (high shear/slip
“Zonal Agitation”) that lack penetration
power(thrust). The standard propellers
also lack performance energy for solids
suspension. “Zonal Mixing” is the only
result these types of propellers can
hope to achieve.
PMSL’s Lancer™
Advanced Pitch
Prop produces exceptional penetrating
power (focused flow) able to easily
reach the far vessel wall while
minimizing the widening of the flow
pattern (shear). This optimized focus
characteristic will achieve efficient and
effective mixing through adequate
power requirements, correct propeller
selection, and mixers positioned as
recommended.
Superior line of mixers designed specifically for tank storage.
Fluid Motion
Fluid Motion is key to the successful Basic Sediment & Water(BS&W) Prevention, Blending, homogenization,
Temperature Uniformity and Crude Oil optimization - enhancement -upgrading in storage tank applications.
The key to fluid motion is the correct propeller. Lancer Props utilize the latest in technology fluid dynamic
advancements to produce its high efficiency propeller. This technology and superior design produces a jet
stream unmatched in it’s application.

Mechanical Seal and Tank Shut-off
With today’s regulations and end user demands of “no oil on the
ground” the mechanical seal and tank shut-off mechanical seal
and tank shut-off mechanism must be of the highest quality.
Designed into every BSE & GSE tank mixer is a taper-to-taper
stainless steel tank shut-off. Every mechanism has a proving
safety valve for 100% proof that the tank contents are sealed
from the atmosphere and provide 100% security to the mechanics.
• Bearings and mechanical seals to be changed

Transmission-GSE
Gearbox designed to AGMA standards and with bearings
exceeding B10/ISO 100,000 hour life. The key feature here is
the drive sleeve removal such that the mechanical seal can be
removed through the arrubus between shaft and gearbox.
• Gearbox does not have to be removed for mechanical
seal repair. No cranes, no lifting, speedy repairs.
Swivel Assembly
The swivel assembly facilitates the propeller to be moved +/- 30
degrees thus allowing the complete tank floor to be swept by the
focus flow generated by the propeller. The design of the swivel
assembly is such that the swivel pins are an interference fit in the
mounting cover and bushes are included in the swivel component.
The assembly comes with a zero leak swivel ball seal and can
be fitted with secondary containment boot.
