Paper Making
Machine Scanner
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of equipment for the pulp and paper
industry required a clutch solution for a new scanning device.
The scanner mounts to large paper making machines and
provides sheet quality profiles and measurements, including
basis weight and moisture content. The scan is performed by
an optical beam, housed in a two-part floating bridge which
moves across the full width of a paper web as it passes.
Solution:
Matrix Model 7AH-030P pilot-mount, air-operated, single
position engagement tooth clutches were selected for this
demanding application.
• Rated torque: 1380 in.lb. (156 Nm) at 80 psi
• Maximum speed: 6,000 rpm
• Sealed bearings require no lubrication
• No slip; no axial thrusts to adjacent components

Papermaking Machines
Problem:
A global manufacturer of papermaking machines needed a
reliable coupling solution for a customer’s machine
rebuild/upgrade in Brazil. The OEM wanted to avoid using
lubricated couplings that can generate undesired backlash.
Long couplings are required since the motors are positioned
away from the machine to prevent damage to the electrical
systems that can be caused by steam used to dry the paper.
Solution:
Lamiflex engineers worked closely with the OEM to design
cost-effective, custom PWF Series (Powerflex) disc couplings
in two sizes that met the machine’s specific drivetrain
operational conditions.
• Torque up to 214,000 Nm (157,838 lb.ft.)
• No lubrication required
• Zero backlash
• Service team on-site during commissioning

Paper Mill Unwind Stand
Problem:
A large paper mill in the U.S. that serves the packaging industry
required a replacement coupling for the unwind stand core
chuck on one of its large papermaking machines. The original
coupling had many special features built into it, but not all were
necessary. Ordering the coupling from the OEM required a long
lead time and was very costly.
Solution:
Working through Motion Industries, Ameridrives engineers
designed a special Amerigear gear coupling with 15.00" of axial
slide and a max speed rating of 6,000 RPM for this specific
application. The Ameridrives team was able to reference
previous paper mill OEM applications where this type of
coupling had been installed.
• The price for the new, custom Ameridrives coupling saved
the customer almost $40,000 compared to OEM
replacement unit.

Paper Mill Vacuum Pump
Problem:
A major paper mill in South America needed a belt drive
solution for a new large vacuum pump installed at their facility.
During the paper making process, vacuum systems are used
to remove water and moisture from pulp as it moves along
conveyors. The new pump operates 24/7/365 at 240 RPM and
is driven by a motor that generates 400 HP @ 1190 RPM.
Solution:
A TB Wood’s QT Power Chain®
II synchronous belt drive
system was installed on the pump and motor. The unique
drive consists of two 224 and 50 tooth made-to-order
sprockets and two 68 mm wide belts.
• The custom paired sprocket sets were designed with flanges
on both sides to ensure belt alignment.
• A riveted ring between the two large sprockets prevents
belt overlap
• Taper-Lock and QD bushings supplied

Corrugated Paperboard
Machine
Problem:
A global manufacturer of corrugated paperboard equipment
was receiving requests from their customers for reduced
maintenance on their equipment. In response, Formsprag was
contacted to see if they could replace a competitor’s clutch with
a maintenance-free solution. The overrunning clutch allows the
feed drive to power rollers at low speed when threading the
leading edge of a new roll of material through the corrugator.
Solution:
Formsprag engineers developed a modified FSO-500
maintenance-free clutch design with a 284 lb.ft. (385 Nm)
torque capacity to meet the customer’s requirements.
• FSO automatic backstopping clutches feature a high torque
density, are lubricated for life and require no adjustments
or controls.
• Designed to fit existing mounting interface dimensions
Modified FSO Clutch
Corrugated Packaging
Roll Stands
Problem:
A manufacturer that specializes in corrugated containers
needed to upgrade existing roll stands that utilized
competitive pneumatic brakes.
Solution:
Wichita Clutch Mistral brakes were selected to achieve
consistent tension control of unwind rolls in the laminating
process.
• Mistral brakes were specifically designed for the
corrugated market
• Built-in guard and constant speed fan for excellent
heat dissipation
• Brakes were coupled with an adaptor for Type 143 roll
stands for easy mounting to replace the old brakes
• Easy-to-maintain design

Mistral Tensioning Brakes
Printing Press
Problem:
A leading global commercial printing equipment manufacturer
needed a replacement coupling solution for a line of its printing
presses. The original disc type couplings, installed on the web
press drive cylinders, lacked the required torsional stiffness,
causing the rollers to slip, which led to increased amounts of
defective printed materials (spoilage). The application had
additional challenges, including extremely tight space limitations
and very small (38 mm) cylinder shafts.
Solution:
Ameridrives engineers developed a custom modified Amerigear
flexible coupling that accommodated the customer required
stiffness, incorporated a shrink disc for quick
assembly/disassembly, and fit in limited available space.
• 53,600 in.lbs Load capacity
• 868 RPM max. speed rating
• Pneumatic air flow holes proprietary to the customer’s design

Custom Amerigear Couplings
Document Binding Equipment
Problem:
One of the world’s leading document binding equipment
OEMs required a clutch/brake that could operate efficiently
for more than 5 million cycles. The clutches and brakes are
used to index pages in the proper timing and speed.
Solution:
Warner Electric SF200 clutch and PB110 brake withstood the
life cycle testing better than competitor models.
• The clutch and brake provided exceptional accuracy in
controlling the motion of the paper feed rollers
• Warner Electric and Inertia Dynamics engineers worked
closely to produce rapid prototypes and responsive
modifications during this new product development
• Altra sales and manufacturing facilities in China were
important to the customer
