The May/June 2014 issue of FAA Safety Briefing is all about Airworthiness Certification and Standards. In this issue we look at the hidden dangers of layering supplemental type certificates (STC), who to go to when your plane has an issue, and how to take care of an aging aircraft. In addition, you can learn more about the airworthiness directive process and how to apply for an STC.
Guide to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)Graeme Cross
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) usage is expected to dramatically increase over the next five years. After the passing of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, the FAA, under the direction of the Secretary of Transportation, gained authorization to begin integration of civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems into the National Air Space (NAS). In conjunction with the US Congress and state and local agencies, the FAA is working to create regulations on recreational and commercial applications that allow more streamlined access of unmanned aircraft to American businesses and institutions*. It is important to keep current with UAS regulations and news by following updates from the FAA, your aviation legal counsel, and your insurance broker.
A simple fact of the aircraft resale market is that aircraft with missing documents usually sell for significantly less than those with continual chronological history. At best, expensive maintenance procedures may have to be reperformed and properly documented in order to return the aircraft to airworthy status. With a standardized Records Archive Management, you can control, collaborate, and safeguard the value of the aircraft records.

Understanding Airworthiness Directives (ADs)-By Flight Express
In 1995, a Beech 58 Baron crashed while attempting to take off from runway 7 at
Lodi’s Lowdown Orlando Executive Airport, killing the pilot and his passenger. When the NTSB
investigated, it was discovered that a two-year-old Airworthiness Directive had

Thanks for answering!

Did you know... ADs exist to address potentially unsafe conditions – i.e., things that could kill
NBAA provides assistance to you. ADs are serious. When dangerous issues become known, the FAA has sev-

Compliance. This section sets forth the time requirement for the primary or first
inspection of the unsafe condition. This will be either a calendar date or flight
time limitation before the inspection must be performed and corrective action
taken. Next an inspection interval will be set forth. Some inspections are only
required once, some inspections are required to be repeated by calendar times,
flight times or in-service times. There will be a description as to the reason for
the AD, often including prior incidents or accidents. Detailed directions for how
to conduct a thorough and proper inspection of the part or condition will be pro-
vided.
Sometimes there are situations that might make compliance with issued ADs ex-
tremely difficult or costly. In those cases you can propose a different method of
compliance to the FAA as set out in 14 CFR Section 39.19. If your aircraft needs
to be flown to a repair facility to comply with an AD, you may request a special
flight permit following the procedures in 14 CFR 21.199.
One very common misconception among pilots is that you may “overfly the AD” by a certain number of hours which usu-
ally ranges from 5 to 10 hours. This is not true! The only way you may overfly an AD is with a special Flight Permit. If you
operate an aircraft or use a product that does not meet the requirement of an AD you are in violation of 14 CFR 39.7 and
could get busted.
As part of any aircraft annual inspection, a full review of the AD list against an aircraft, including its airframe, engine, pro-
peller, and appliances must be performed to ensure compliance. Additionally there should be an account in the aircraft
maintenance logs of reoccurring ADs to show ongoing compliance. To be perfectly blunt, if a mechanic fails to do this as
part of your annual, he is ripping you off, violating federal law and putting you and your passengers at risk.
Any reputable repair station or knowledgeable A&P will be happy to sit down and discuss, research and explain the status
of your aircraft with respect to AD compliance.
