The document discusses differing views on the role of reasoning and intuition in making moral judgments. Some research has emphasized the role of reasoning, while more recent research highlights the role of automatic emotional processes. There is tension around whether intuitions or reasons play a more critical role. Haidt argues that moral reasoning involves a conscious, slower process while moral intuition occurs unconsciously and is faster. He contends that reasoning still plays a role in moral judgments but likely as a post hoc attempt to rationalize intuitive judgments rather than determining them.

Choose ONE of the following paper topics testing your understanding of the work as a whole and allowing you to analyze important themes and literary devices.
If you choose one of the Dante topics, following each question is a sample outline (because the material can be difficult) to get you started. You are expected to use specific quotations and analysis of quotations in your response. You are allowed to use the reading guides I provided in the Dante folder, so your only sources in your Works Cited would be quotes from the text itself (must be back up points with textual material) and analyses (quotes) from reading quides provided in the folder from the scholary authors. Do not search the internet for more information or use sources other than mentioned above.
Remember this paper is a three-page MLA format paper, plus a Works Cited page.
You do not have to use the outlines provided....but at least review them to get an idea of what you will write over. My suggestion is do not try to write over every point in the outline...each paragraph needs to have at least two examples/quotes from the text, additional analysis from the reading guides is in addition to what you quote from the text.
I also have attached an MLA format guide, an example essay, and a sample outline in file forms as attachments to help you as well. Please review. The "bubbles" in the essay example state information important to writing formal essays----my suggestion is a quick review before you begin this paper. Oh, and don't forget you need to review your Short Response for any errors or suggestions I made for this paper.
TOPIC CHOICES
Topic #1: There are three main themes in traditional literature; these themes include the picaresque theme, in which the character travels or makes a journey; the reversal of fortune theme, in which the character has his or her situation in life changed; and the survival of the least worthy theme, in which a character who is not really equipped for survival is able to endure. Which of these themes apply/applies to Dante’s Inferno?
Possible Outline for Topic #1
I. Thesis Statement: All three of the main themes in traditional literature apply to Dante’s The Inferno; these themes include the picaresque theme, the reversal of fortune theme, and the survival of the least worthy theme. (You may want to use only ONE of these three points in your paper--Example: The picaresque theme in traditional literature applies to Dante'sThe Divine Comedy when Dante is lost in the beginning, approached by a form, and reacts to his journey. Or you may choose one of the other themes and just use the outline information for that theme.)
II. The picaresque theme
A. Dante lost in Canto I
1. In woods
2. Midway on way of life
3. Right road lost
B. Approached by form
1. Says Dante must go another way to leave a wasteful life behind
2. Says Dante should take him as guide

Philosophy Extra Credit Projects If you wish, you can do t.docxkarlhennesey
Philosophy Extra Credit Projects
If you wish, you can do two extra credit assignments this term, one small and one
large project. Each small project will end up as a 3-5 page paper: 1 page (or less)
summary of what you read/watched), 1-2 pages answering a few questions, and 1-2 pages
reaction to the philosophical themes of the book/movie. Larger projects are more of
same, but the themes for that project carries over into different genres (therefore, you will
have more to read watch) and are more difficult or complex (again giving you a little
more work to do).
Each little project will be worth (about) 2 points, while the larger projects are
worth 5. With partial credit, doing both projects well can (and will) shift you a whole
letter grade! But note that they are graded just like reaction papers, so if you do one,
please be sure to put a lot of energy into it, and come see me if you are having problems
with it!
Small Projects
Philosophy and the Divine
, director Aronofsky. A radically different view of God is pushed by this film – I added
this one to the list as a “neutral” choice for anyone that wants to work a little more with
Philosophy of Religion. Sit back and enjoy the ride (it’s a wild, weird movie) and then
let me know if you think that any of the articles we’ve read can handle this kind of
understand of the Divine, and what exactly is Aronofsky saying about God.
“The Screw Tape Letters,” C.S. Lewis. This book is also a somewhat neutral choice,
since Lewis went from a devout believer to an atheist, and back again (however, he’s
obviously returned to his faith when he writes this). What is Lewis really saying about
God (or the Devil) and the nature of Evil? How responsible are we as (merely) human?
“Twilight of the Idols,” Nietzsche. A book for the non-believers, or those still sitting on
the fence. If you’re a Nine-Inch-Nails fan, this is close as it comes to mandatory reading
since Nietzsche was the first to publicly declare, “God is Dead.” I really want to know
what you make of Nietzsche’s subtitle for the text (“How to Philosophize with a
Hammer”), what Nietzsche himself meant by it, and what he thinks God really is. This
one is a little longer and harder project, so come see me if you want to work on it – you
may need a little help throughout the project.
Philosophy and life
“Fight Club,” Palahniuk. A great book, followed by a great movie that totally changes
the message that Palahniuk is trying to push. Who is Tyler Durden (not literally – that’s
for your summary) in the psychological, philosophical sense? Is self improvement really
masturbation (what does that even mean)? Did Fight Club, Project Mayhem really work?
(Again, make sure you read the book!)
“The Stranger,” Camus. A classic existential work, Camus really moves towards a new
meaning for Life and a radical definition of responsibility. I really want to know what
you ...

Task Six: Activities for Dante's Inferno
Select an Activity that interests you; make a copy of the Activity question to begin your response. Upload your Activity here. These Activity entries must be thoughtful; each one should be the equivalent of at least a full typed page or more in length (e.g. not less than 250 words). They may be longer if you need to say more on your topic. You will not be able to do these Activity entries properly unless you have carefully read the assigned literature.
1) In Canto 5 of the Inferno, Paolo and Francesca personify the ethical dilemmas of courtly love, and they are punished in hell for their love. Who or what, exactly, was to blame for their going to hell? Explain this in detail, using the text to support your comments.
2) All the women in the Inferno seem to be there for misconduct connected to sexuality. Identify some of the women in the Inferno and specify exactly what their sins were and how their punishments are suited to their crimes. Now, can you identify any men who are in hell for sexual crimes? Are these cases similar to the women's, or different? Explain and support your responses with examples from the text.
3) The Inferno presents a thoroughly medieval Christian vision of hell, although it draws heavily on the classical past, especially Virgil's Aeneid. Identify some elements in the Inferno that you think are specifically Christian, and some that you suspect are leftovers from pagan antiquity. Explain how both work together in the text to create Dante's special medieval vision of hell.
4) A subtitle for the Inferno could be "the punishment fits the crime." Give some examples of this from the text and discuss whether or not you agree with Dante that these are appropriate punishments for the crimes committed. Explain why you think this concept of the punishment fitting the crime was important to Dante. Support your comments with specific examples from the text.
5) Canto 26 tells about Ulysses (the Latin name for Odysseus), who is in one of the lower circles of hell, because he was an evil counselor. How do you think the Greek hero Odysseus degenerated into the Christian villain Ulysses?
