13. First Reading
1. Who are the main characters and what do you
learn about them? (google any obvious adjectives and
show the replacement) Draw a picture of them and
put key words and quotes around them.
2. The poem tells a story. What is it? Identify some
of the key events (aim = 5-10)
3. What are your first impressions of the
narrator/speaker (the Duke)?
4. What do you notice about the sounds or
patterns of the rhythm and rhyme as it is read to
you?
15. Call my Bluff – dealing with tricky words
• Read out the word with the correct definition and
two false ones. The rest of the group or class try
to work out the true meaning.
• Some of you may have the true definition and
you have to make up the false ones
• Some of you may have nothing and you have to
look up the true definition and then make up the
false ones
16. Create a Dating Profile for the Duke!
Use facts you know from the poem (even lines if
you can!)
Invent things you don’t know BUT you must stay
in character.
Look at the example ones – what kind of style
would he go for?
