                    October 2011 Report

                                  Program Highlights
   Indian Knoll held Llama, Llama Red Pajama Day, which raised $624 for the
    Cherokee County Ferst Foundation.
   The media specialist assisted staff in using PD360 and viewing the Overview of
    Common Core Standards video.
   The media center received a $500 grant from Credit Union of Georgia.
   The media specialist located and checked out books for teachers on following
    topics: viruses and bacteria, World War II, Vietnam War, three levels of
    government, and the Underground Railroad.
   Twenty students attended three meetings of the Firebirds Book Club.
   The media specialist received training in using Mediacast equipment. Live news
    was broadcast to the school each day.
   The media specialist updated the media center website, media center blog, and
    front lobby kiosk.
   A Reading Celebration was held for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who met
    their reading challenge goals for the first nine weeks.
   Author Mike Knudson visited the media center and spoke to 3rd, 4th, and 5th
    grade students about the writing process, specifically revising.

                             Whole Class Lessons Taught

      69 lessons
Kindergarten – Students attended weekly storytime. Storytime themes included the
letter P, realism and fantasy, animals that hibernate, and author Mo Willems.
1st grade – Students learned about alphabetical order and how the “everybody”
section of the media center is organized.
2nd grade – Students learned about guide words and definitions and then created
their own fall dictionaries.
3rd grade – Students located unfamiliar words from the book Temple Cat by
Andrew Clements in the dictionary and then we read the story.
4th grade – Students learned about the parts of a dictionary entry through
Dictionary Dan.
5th grade – Students learned about the parts of a dictionary entry and then
practiced using dictionaries.
6th grade – Students reviewed Grolier Online’s components and then completed a
Grolier Scavenger Hunt. Through this activity, students also practiced reading for
meaning.

genres, including narrative, informational, persuasive, and response to literature.

Lesson: Picture Books in the 1950s
Stndards for the 21st Century Learner: 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information
presented in any format in order to make inferences and gather meaning.
Georgia Performance Standards: ELA2R4 The student uses a variety of strategies
to gain meaning from grade-level text.
Collaborative partners: Second grade teachers

  • 1. Indian Knoll Elementary School Media Center October 2011 Report Program Highlights  Indian Knoll held Llama, Llama Red Pajama Day, which raised $624 for the Cherokee County Ferst Foundation.  The media specialist assisted staff in using PD360 and viewing the Overview of Common Core Standards video.  The media center received a $500 grant from Credit Union of Georgia.  The media specialist located and checked out books for teachers on following topics: viruses and bacteria, World War II, Vietnam War, three levels of government, and the Underground Railroad.  Twenty students attended three meetings of the Firebirds Book Club.  The media specialist received training in using Mediacast equipment. Live news was broadcast to the school each day.  The media specialist updated the media center website, media center blog, and front lobby kiosk.  A Reading Celebration was held for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who met their reading challenge goals for the first nine weeks.  Author Mike Knudson visited the media center and spoke to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students about the writing process, specifically revising.   • 3. Indian Knoll Elementary School Media Center October 2011 Report Whole Class Lessons Taught  69 lessons Kindergarten – Students attended weekly storytime. Storytime themes included the letter P, realism and fantasy, animals that hibernate, and author Mo Willems. 1st grade – Students learned about alphabetical order and how the “everybody” section of the media center is organized. 2nd grade – Students learned about guide words and definitions and then created their own fall dictionaries. 3rd grade – Students located unfamiliar words from the book Temple Cat by Andrew Clements in the dictionary and then we read the story. 4th grade – Students learned about the parts of a dictionary entry through Dictionary Dan. 5th grade – Students learned about the parts of a dictionary entry and then practiced using dictionaries. 6th grade – Students reviewed Grolier Online’s components and then completed a Grolier Scavenger Hunt. Through this activity, students also practiced reading for meaning.  18 checkout sessions Collaborative Lessons Taught Lesson: Using Grolier to Research Turtles and Beavers Standards for the 21st Century Learner: 1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry. Georgia Performance Standards: ELA2W2 The student writes in a variety of genres, including narrative, informational, persuasive, and response to literature. Collaborative partner: Talley Lesson: Picture Books in the 1950s Stndards for the 21st Century Learner: 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format in order to make inferences and gather meaning. Georgia Performance Standards: ELA2R4 The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text. Collaborative partners: Second grade teachers 3
