The media center had a busy month due to a snow storm that caused a week of school to be missed. Various classes used the media center for projects including 2nd graders showcasing their graphic novels, 4th graders presenting at a colonial wax museum, and 5th graders collaborating on a poetry and photography project. Younger grades also visited for units on weather, reading skills, and research. The media center saw over 3,000 patrons and 2,400 checkouts during the month.

Identifying Partisan Slant in News Articles and Twitter during Political CrisesDima Karamshuk
In this paper, we are interested in understanding the interrelationships between mainstream and social media in forming public opinion during mass crises, specifically in regards to how events are framed in the mainstream news and on social networks and to how the language used in those frames may allow to infer political slant and partisanship. We study the lingual choices for political agenda setting in mainstream and social media by analyzing a dataset of more than 40M tweets and more than 4M news articles from the mass protests in Ukraine during 2013-2014 — known as "Euromaidan" — and the post-Euromaidan conflict between Russian, pro-Russian and Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine and Crimea. We design a natural language processing algorithm to analyze at scale the linguistic markers which point to a particular political leaning in online media and show that political slant in news articles and Twitter posts can be inferred with a high level of accuracy. These findings allow us to better understand the dynamics of partisan opinion formation during mass crises and the interplay between mainstream and social media in such circumstances.
This is the slide show portion of my sample presentation of library instruction for a Virginia History course. The sample topic chosen was the real-life character Frank Stringfellow and the dramatized character Frank Stringfellow from the PBS series, Mercy Street.
Analysis of the State of the Union Addresses by the American presidents determines which words are characteristic for Democratic and which for Republican presidents. It turns out that "yes" is a word characteristic for one of the parties, while "don't" is frequent in the speeches of the other party.

Documenting the Stories of Irene: An Ethnographic JourneyVTFolklifeCenter
Jacki McCarty, 8th grade English teacher and Sarah Ibson, 8th grade Social Studies teacher at Harwood Union Middle School partnered with the Vermont Folklife Center on a documentary project in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
In the early days after Hurricane Irene, eighty-five 8th grade students at Harwood sat down to write a prompt about the Hurricane and the Community Response. What grew out of that exercise was a semester long ethnographical interview project that culminated in 5 student produced documentaries.
This powerpoint, originally shared at the Vermont Association of Social Studies in Manchester, Vermont, details the origin of the idea, the scope and sequence of the project, and shows one of the
five final documentaries.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
