Let's Go on a Bear Hunt: Special Collections in the WildElaine Harrington
Case Study presentation given at "Evolving Identities: Collaboration to Enhance Student Success" National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education, Dundalk IT, 23 May 2019.
What is the barrier to researching in Special Collections? Is the process akin to going on a bear hunt? Can you go through it? If you learn how to do this then the achievements and opportunities for student success can be immense. Student success can be gauged in terms of internal departmental or university awards, or external awards and funding. Equally student success can be gauged by public engagement outputs, the reach and impact of such outputs and the skills learned. This presentation examines a number of different interactions with Special Collections borne out of conversations 2013-2019.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

• Ms. Neel’s English IV students used the databases to access articles related to the
Renaissance and Shakespeare in preparation for reading Hamlet. They used the Advance
search feature after formulating their essential questions and key search terms. The final
product was an Annotated Bibliography using MLA formatted citations and summaries of
the articles from the databases.
• Ms. Robbins’ Best Global Citizens continued their research on their essential questions
related to Multiple Sclerosis. They were instructed on how to use the database to access
related articles, how to do an advanced search, and how to filter their results. In addition,
one week there were special guests from the MS Foundation who visited and brought “MS
Kits” which simulate the symptoms of MS when students tried on gloves, glasses, weights,
etc.
• The students in Mr. Sears’ Latin classes researched various topics related to Ancient
Rome and created presentations in Google Drive. They cited their electronic and print
resources in MLA format and created the Works Cited slide as the final presentation slide.
• The students from Ms. Wales’ Food Science classes visited the library to become more
familiar with OverDrive and to check out the Big Library Read book, Keys to the Kitchen.
Back in their classroom, they cooked recipes and created digital projects as a response to
their experiences with the technology app of their choice.
Ms. Jett’s Journalism students created newspapers on the topic of their choice and printed
them in the library.
