This document summarizes a project done with 20 fifth grade students at Emerson Elementary in Kansas City, Kansas. The school has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged and disabled students but has shown academic progress in recent years. For this project, the focus was on improving the writing skills of African American boys, who traditionally lagged behind in test scores. Students used the online platform Glogster to create virtual posters on the theme of social justice. They analyzed example posts, wrote essays describing them, and then designed their own. The writing from the African American boys improved significantly, with most scoring between "meets standard" and "exceeds standard".
