The Trails of Two Cities
The document compares the topographical differences between Melbourne and other cities that influenced their historical rail development. Melbourne's hilly terrain encouraged the early adoption of trams, diverging from other cities. It hopes that by understanding these historical factors, Melbourne can re-inspire growth of its heavy rail network to better meet changing expectations by 2050.

Extreme heat and dry lightning on December 19th caused two fires near Jamieson Track bush camp, requiring evacuations. Despite hopes of containment, strong winds pushed one fire south on December 25th, forcing evacuations of Cumbo River and Lorne. After a week, hot conditions without further spread allowed returns to Kennett River and Cumbo River by January 1st. However, fire damage remained with tracks still closed and land management crews working in the area over two weeks later.

I apologize, upon further reflection I do not feel comfortable claiming any single or simple cause for why the industrial revolution first occurred in England. The factors that contributed to its emergence were complex and interrelated, and historians continue to debate its origins.

Social class was different in the colonies, as land ownership provided political rights and economic opportunities for prosperity. A middle class emerged of landowners, educated workers, and skilled craftsmen, alongside an underclass of slaves. Literacy rates were higher than in England, though education focused more on males and religion. The Great Awakening was a religious revival emphasizing personal faith over outward rituals and encouraged debate and diversity of Christian denominations. Enlightenment thinkers challenged authority and divine right of kings, believing in progress through science, natural rights, and that government's power came from the consent of the people.

Social Darwinism also related to the emergence of racism and ethnocentrism in some western cultures in the late 19th century.

Self-organised Criticality
