Indigenous Australians
Aboriginal Spirituality Aboriginal spirituality originally derives from the stories of the dreaming.
The dreaming is the knowledge and a sense of belonging that the Aboriginals had of the beginning
of life and the relationship to the land and sea (Australian Museum, 2011). The dreaming stories are
passed on from one generation to the next orally. These stories teach the following generations how
to behave towards the land and other people. The dreaming stories give them a sense of duty to
protect the land and appreciate it because the dreamtime stories indicate that the spirits have not died
but are still alive in different forms as animals or humans, therefore the ancestor's power is still felt
through the landforms (Clark, 1963), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aboriginals have been discriminated against since early European invaders, where their land was
taken away from them as well as their human rights. The Aboriginal– Protection controlled the lives
of the aboriginal people by deciding on their behalf of where they should live or how the children
should be raised (Australian Museum 2011). Some aborigines were exempt from these decisions
because they had been raised to a more European lifestyle and were given a citizenship, which could
be taken away from them. However; in 1969 the Aboriginal– Protection was abolished and the
responsibility of the aboriginals was carried on by Indigenous Affairs, which was then the aborigines
were recognized and given the same rights as other Australian citizens( Australian Museum, 2011).
Impacts of invasion and settlement of First Fleet on Aboriginals The First Fleet sailed from
Portsmouth in 1787 by captain Arthur Philip which carried 729 convicts to Australia where they had
to live in a penal colony and work for the government. In 1788, eleven ships had anchored on
Australian shores(Dunn.C and McCreadie. M. 2010). Australia then encountered a drastic amount of
change, hopeful beginnings, hopeless failures and noble achievements. The settlers did not question
the aboriginals for the permission to settle on their land but

It could be financial, political, or literally natural disaster.
While so, housing alone takes up major portion of total energy usage. According to United States'
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it accounted for 38.9 percent of total U.S. energy
consumption in 2005. In year 2006 it took 72 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption and this
number will rise to 75% by 2025. So it can be seen how change in managing housings can lead to
positive changes (EPA).
Green building technology tackles against these problems with many different technologies,
adopting them appropriately for each aspects of energy conservation. While so, 2 examples that
directly fight against specific aspects are brought up here.
2.2 Heat Control
Firstly, it has been said that the heating and cooling process of a household heavily uses electricity
and causes substantial carbon emission. Following are statistics stated by EPA:
The average household spends at least $2,000 a year on energy bills – over half of which goes to
heating and cooling.
Out of the total energy consumption in an average household, 50% goes to space heating, 27% to
run appliances, 19% to heat water and 4% goes to air conditioning.
The numbers are self–explanatory; heating and cooling alone is a big part of whole energy
consumption. Temperature control technology for green building enables reducing such
consumption and carbon emission.

Pont Du Gard: The Well-Known Roman Empire
The well–known Roman Empire has left us many historical buildings and monuments during its era.
Among these fascinating historical buildings, there were a number of important ancient bridges that
carried water to cities, the aqueducts. One of the most famous and well–preserved ancient
aqueducts, Pont Du Gard was built in the first century AD. It played an important role by supplying
water to the city of Nimes, formerly known as Nemausus, from a spring at Uzes which is 40
kilometers away. A Roman statesman, Marcus Agrippa, was believed to build this structure during
Augustus era but the fact was twisted due to recent researches. Pont Du Gard is located close to the
town of Vers–Pont–Du–Gard, the southern part of France across the Gardon River. ... Show more

A total 47 number of spans were built for this aqueduct. 35 of the spans are at the upper area, 11 in
the middle and 6 at the bottom part which are spread wider in comparing with the top. On the
bottom level, the piers buttressed by triangle carrying the arches was designed to breakwaters
against the force of floods (Trachtenberg, 2003). The visible bounding blocks on the second tier
surface were used to carry scaffolding (Passchier & Schram, 2016). According to "The Pont du Gard
Aqueduct Bridge – Masterpiece of Ancient Building", construction was started in 40 A.D. and it
took more than fifteen years to complete with the involvement of a thousand workers

Why Do People Overcome Procrastination?
Procrastination is the act of putting off doing things at a later time or date for no particular reason.
For the person experiencing procrastination it can be either functional or dysfunctional according to
the degree of the behavior (qtd. in Sweitzer 11). A person that procrastinates must realize they have
a problem and find effective ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health,
family and job at risk. According to Joseph Ferrari, a Professor of psychology at DePaul University,
states that twenty percent of people realize they are chronic procrastinators which is a lifestyle to
them. Some procrastinators are not born but pick up the behavior from family members (12). There
are various reasons why people procrastinate.
Some people procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, poor time management, to escape things
that seem difficult or unpleasant, feeling depressed or guilty, and fear being judged by others. Some
believes that procrastination is brought on by laziness or lack of discipline, but according to Gard, a
writer for Current Health 2 disagree, saying there are perfectionists that often procrastinate. For
example, a perfectionist may put off writing a paper until the night before it is due and than have an
excuse if they get a less than perfect grade, "I did it in a hurry" (22). For example, some
philosophers and scientists, such as Aristotle and Einstein, "questioned if time even exists if people
are not around to make it", and Einstein "believed that time was muddle in which the past, present
and future were mere illusions" (qtd. in deWaal).
Some people do not realize they are procrastinators because of some personality disorders. A
personality disorder called passive–aggressive is "chronic conditions which make a person seem to
comply with the desires and needs of others, but actually passively resist them. They become
increasingly hostile and angry" (Moore & Jefferson). The cause of this disorder is unknown but some
of its symptoms are, avoiding responsibility by claiming to forget, having fear of authority,
procrastinating, and resisting other people's suggestions. Counseling can help and identify the
problem if it is treated at an early stage (Moore & Jefferson).

World War I: A Victory Garden
A Victory Garden is was created during the war to help increase food production. During the war
many of the food that was grown was sent to the war so communities started growing their own
gardens to help supply food for the community. The way it worked was that each community would
grow certain crops that were calorie rich. We determined the calories need for our community was to
be 78 million because there is about 3,500 people at school and each person would consume about
2,000 over a period of 5 months. My planting plans would be about accurate, I wanted to have more
calories than needed. I got good places to plant crops and good crops. I decided to use dates because
it was very rich in calories. The other crops such as corn, potatoes,

Should High School Sports Be Banned
Should High School Sports be Banned?
Growing up in a rural community, I have noticed how sports have impacted the people of a
community and unified the members of a team. Sports have become apart of everyday life for many
Americans, and many high school kids, like myself, take part in the playing of a sport. However,
sports have become much more complex. Along with practices, student–athletes are now required to
dedicate many more hours of their day to sports, and many do not have enough time to do other
activities such as homework. Also, sports have become increasingly dangerous, and more athletes
are sustaining injuries such as concussions. In some American high schools, sports have become
more important than academics. Knowing that students have huge workloads with hours of
homework every night, schools should consider all their options to help their students succeed even
if that means banning sports.
Looking at the opposing side, one can see the benefits of high school sports. Due to academic
eligibility rules to play on sports teams, dropout rates have decreased for at–risk students that play
sports (Bowen and Hitt 11). This has caused student–athletes to be more likely to go to college, earn
higher wages, and have positive relationships with school employees (Bowen and Hitt 10).
Obviously, students who participate in sports have higher fitness levels compared to those who do
not play sports. Also, a survey done in 2002 by the Department of Education showed that

How Does Camille Preaker's Role Change Throughout The Novel
Throughout the novel Sharp Objects main character Camille Preaker, is faced with many obstacles
in life: lies, betrayal, death, depression, etc. Except for turning the other cheek and accepting her
imperfections Camille throws in the white flag instead and lets all the negative things dawn on her.
Ever since Camille was 13 years of age she had been cutting words into her body. Due to self harm,
the cutting eventually sent her to a psychiatric hospital for 6 months. At the age of 30 Camille had
got a job as a journalist and a staff reporter for the fourth–best newspaper in Chicago. Her editor
Frank Curry who helped her in recovery and was pretty much the only person that she's ever told
about her cutting asks about her hometown Wind Gap in Missouri. Camille tells him the basics and
how she left the town just 8 years earlier with her sanity barely intact. Nevertheless, there was an
investigation going on in the town and he wanted Camille to cover it. There's a 10 year old girl
missing in Wind Gap, the second in two years, he tells her. Just a year earlier a 9 year old girl was
found strangled in a creek bed, blue, bloated and every tooth ripped out of her head. Going back to

Roman Concrete Construction
Spanning across three continents, the Roman Empire took on several massive building projects that
dominated the landscape and left behind important marks in history. The building industry in Rome
was larger in scale and more organized than anything before it. First of the two would have to be the
new building material of the time called concrete. "Roman concrete (opus caementicium), was
developed early in the 2nd c. BCE" and this material was a large part of the advancement of Roman
architecture, because of the strength that it added to structures while also being lighter weight than
other forms of concrete (Anderson, n.d.). Next, the use of the arc proved to ad to the structural
integrity of these buildings and other architectural forms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It can be seen that the challenging construction marvels of Rome depended on a certain level of
organization and order. Furthermore, the advancement in city planning and construction technology
that took place during that time has clearly influenced architecture around the word. Rome left an
incredible legacy that has formed the basis for construction and engineering today, because of the
way the way Roman architecture displayed use of "...discovery, experimentation and exploitation of
concrete, arches and vaulting" (Anderson,

How Did Roman Architecture Come To Mind?
When we think of Roman architecture there are many ancient structures but which come to mind?
The Coliseum in Rome, the Triumphal Arches of Titus and Constantine, The Pantheon of Rome, and
the Pont–de–Gard in Nimes, France. Often the success of a society is judged by the structures it
creates. Therefore, the might of Rome can be seen not only in its engineering projects and structures,
which rivaled all other ancient civilizations, but also in the sense of order and superiority which was
conveyed by their achievements. The Pantheon of Rome and The Pont–de–Gard in Nimes, France
are two classical examples.

How Did Roman Cultures Use Arches
The Roman Empire is credited with the development of many great achievements. These
achievements can still be seen in Rome and throughout the world. The Romans are well known for
their aqueduct system and huge colosseum that are still standing today. These monumental building
feats would not have been created without the use and knowledge of many different techniques. The
use of cement was one of the technologies employed to build these large structures. The utilization
of arches was another. Many people associate the idea of arches with the Romans. However, they
were not the first people to utilize arches. This paper will concentrate on why the Romans were
credited with developing the arch; what they did to improve previous cultures use of arches; and
how the Romans used arches to create massive structures that are still standing today.
The Romans were the first builders in Europe, perhaps the first in the world, to fully appreciate the
advantages of the arch, the vault and the dome (Cartwright, 2013). The Romans are credited with
creating arches because they used them so often and in extremely large structures. Most people have

Heaton describes the Roman aqueducts as one of the greatest achievements in the ancient world.
The aqueducts transported water from reservoirs at a higher elevation to different locations within
Rome. At the height of the Roman Empire, they needed to supply water to over one million people.
There was over 260 miles of aqueduct built during the Roman reign. The aqueduct system worked
due to gravity. The water would flow from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. The Romans tried
to follow the lay of the land as best as they could, but sometimes, to keep the gradient so that the
water would continue to flow, they would have to tunnel the aqueduct through mountainsides or
even build large bridge like structures to span across valleys (Heaton,

Failure In Roman Architecture
The Romans were recognized and renowned for their engineering accomplishments, having
pioneered engineering materials and structures, some standing till date. Despite these achievements,
they have been accused of failing in aesthetics. I believe terming Roman architecture as failure
aesthetically is extreme due to their pragmatic nature and practical approach, evident from the
aqueducts, the amphitheatre and Roman temples.
The Romans constructed aqueducts to transport water from different sources into metropolitan areas.
According to Anderson (2012), the primary purpose of the aqueducts was to transport water from
valleys into town. The bridges and viaducts on aqueducts were necessary for aqueducts to support
the water flow, instead of "architectural glories to be admired." Anderson felt the Pont du Gard was
a mixed piece of architecture from the Romans. They stayed organized by listing the soft yellow
limestone bricks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They built several amphitheatres mostly homogeneous, varying in size namely Pompeii, Arles and
Nîmes. According to Ulrich (2014), the materials used to build amphitheatres, concrete, or opus
reticulatum, was evidence that they were significant in the Roman Empire. Buildings made of
concrete in the Roman Empire were politically and ideologically motivated, establishing the
significance and prestige amphitheatres held. Experienced teams were sent out of central Italy to
construct amphitheatres outside the capital. A Roman hierarchical seating system designed for the
platform seating arena, or cavea, was incorporated into the amphitheatres. In terms of size and
extravagance, none could be compared to the majestic Flavian amphitheatre, more commonly
known as the Colosseum. The exterior design of the Colosseum was in Doric, Ionic and Corinthian
order surrounding the façade of the amphitheatre, a lavish stadium created by the Romans to
showcase their power, wealth and talents on the grandest

Who Is Audrey Flack's Wheel Of Fortune
Audrey Flack's Wheel of Fortune is a perfect example of the balance that artists have to find
between unity and variety. At first glimpse, it seems as though Flack has merely painted many
random objects. However, if the viewer goes beyond a quick glance and spends time closely
examining the painting, connections can be made to help understand the vanity of life. The meaning
behind Wheel of Fortune brings unity to this otherwise unstructured painting.
The symmetry found in Christian Boltanski's Altar to the Chases High School is one thing that
makes the piece pleasing to the eye. Although the photographs used in this piece are not identical, a
vertical line drawn down the middle of the work would show that both halves are symmetrical in
size, shape, and placement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the tree in the foreground were the only thing that appeared in the painting, the viewer wouldn't
know if he was looking at a tree, a branch, or a twig. Likewise, if just the water were visible, it
would be hard to determine if the water was to represent a pond, a stream, or a river. The same goes
for the mountains in the background. Without them, the painting would not seem nearly as vast.
In Empire, Andy Warhol emphasizes the very top of the Empire State Building. In the black and
white photograph, the tall building takes center stage as the top of the Empire State Building is lit up

only the very tips of those buildings make their way into the photograph.

bridge includes numerous arches of varying sizes. The repeating arches create a visually pleasing
pattern that carries the viewer's gaze all the way across the

"Some of the most greatest Ancient Romans structures are the Aqueducts, Pantheon, and the
Coliseum. The Aqueducts were an engineering breakthrough and arches which were up to 18 feet
tall and tunnels were used in constructing them. There were 416 km of Aqueduct plumbing, and 900
million liters a day came from the fresh springs of Roman Hills. "Some aqueducts were as high as
51 meters in height, and were required to have stacked arches to support the weights." The Pantheon
was constructed by Hadrian in 125 A.D, and is the most visionary building of Ancient Rome. It is
the largest dome of it's type in Ancient Rome, and required the technique of building arches at 360
degrees around a point. The Pantheon had a dome of 44 meters across, and five types of cement
were used to keep the weight distribution as minimal as possible. The Pantheon is also one of the
best preserved buildings due to the many techniques of building the structure. The Coliseum began
construction in 72 A.D. by the emperor Vespasian. However, Vespasian did not live to see it's
completion, and his son Titus did. The Colosseum had multiple tiers of sitting (in order of tier
sitting) with the emperor at the bottom, his nobles, soldiers and citizens, slaves, and women at the
top. The exterior of the bottom three tiers were built from arches, and the top tier was built from
concrete. Sails were also added to the top tier level to protect guests from the sun. Underneath the
Coliseum was also a labyrinth of tunnels which held 32 animals, and hundreds of prisoners/slaves."

An Analysis of Art in Ancient China, Rome, and Northern...
An Analysis of Art in Ancient China, Rome, and N. Europe
Introduction
One thing is permanent about art throughout the ages and civilizations of time: it always expresses
some aspect of the culture that produced it. So it may be seen in Renaissance Italy in Michelangelo's
David, or in Hellenistic Greece in the Dying Gaul. The Egyptian statue of Anubis reveals something
about the spiritual belief of those ancient people, and the abstract expressionism of Kandinsky in the
20th century represents the shift in intellectual concepts of modern spirituality. Art throughout the
ages has always been coupled with some sense of otherworldliness. My recent travels through time
have confirmed this and these pages will show exactly how artworks from late 2nd century BC
China, 1st century BC Rome, and 16th century Northern Europe illustrate the fact that art in every
time and place may serve as a shining example of the beliefs and cultural attitudes of that time and
place.
Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi's Tomb (200 BC)
My initial time travel destination is China in the year 200 BC. Here I examine the resting place of
the First Emperor of Qin. Buried in Qin Shi Huangdi's tomb are thousands of life–size terra–cotta
replicas of his soldiers and tell us something of the warrior–tyrant, who unified China: "This man

The Design Of Roman Aqueducts
The Design of Roman Aqueducts: Pont du Gard
Roman structures dominated the Roman values and power across the landscape of Europe. Many of
these structures, especially the aqueducts, show significant evidence of the Roman architecture and
engineering superiority. Not only that their structures are highly durable, standing monumentally
over thousands of years, the cleverness in the design of their water distribution system is an
achievement to be mesmerized, considering the 200 million gallons of water being supplied daily to
the city of Rome herself by the early 4th century AD . This essay will investigate Pont du Gard as
one of the most magnificent members of the Roman aqueducts, in regard to its design processes,
along with the technological issues in relation to the aqueduct design.
Pont du Gard functioned as an aqueduct bridge, a portion of the Nimes Aqueduct, delivering the
majority of the water supply to the city of Nemausus (Nimes, France), an important colonial city of
Rome. Its unarguably remarkable size, being over 49 m tall, makes it the biggest bridge the Roman
engineers had ever constructed, only a metre shorter than the Colosseum, and it is still standing until
today. Another important feature of this aqueduct is the maintenance of the gradient over the
distance of 50 km. The gradient over the whole course of the aqueduct is only a mere 0.034 percent
and the actual gradient on the section downstream of Pont du Gard is no more than 7 mm per 100 m.

Indigenous people groups over the world have been influenced by the presentation of advances of

Eating Disorder Problem
An eating disorder is defined as any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal
or disturbed eating habits. These disorders can be caused by a variety of things, but one that is
commonly overlooked is exercise. The major consensus is that diet and exercise, will only
contribute to a healthier lifestyle. In reality, this ideology of exercise as an unproblematic activity is
pushing children and adults alike to develop eating disorders. With each of these disorders comes its
own string of problems that can have implications that affect individuals for life. A problem that
then arises is due to the grey areas of these disorders it is sometimes difficult to differentiate
between what is a disorder, and what is considered healthy. ... Show more content on

What makes exercise 'compulsive' is when someone will spend many hours a day exercising several
days a week, if not every day, and this problem is usually encountered by people who have anorexia
and bulimia (Orthorexia, Excessive Exercise & Nutrition). General signs of a compulsive exerciser
are being increasingly bothered by weight/size; ambitious fitness targets; cancelling social events to
train; refusing to take time off despite injury; mood swings and the inability to eat if they have not
achieved their exercise goal (Orthorexia, Excessive Exercise & Nutrition). A prime example of this
is the story of Lindsey from the Zanker and Gard article she would exercise every day multiple time,
and be upset if she didn't reach her fitness goal. Later she tells the story of a time she injured her
back she refused to quit training because she would become fat (Zanker and Gard 54). This story
exposes a major problem stemming from exercise these individuals are only aiming to exercise so
that they work off calories in order to lose weight. This is a self–esteem driven problem, these
people don't feel good, or see their day as ruined if they don't burn a certain number of calories, or if
they skip a workout. It is easy to see how this will lead to an eating disorder, because if these
individual can't lose the weight with only excessive exercise their only other option is to cut
calories, and many times they will cut calories in a drastic manner. If someone is anorexic or
bulimic and is using compulsive exercise as a way of compensating for their eating behaviors this is
using up essential calories, which are needed to carry out the simplest functions (Orthorexia,
Excessive Exercise & Nutrition) Going to the gym most days is considered a good thing, but
training hard to the point of excess, or cutting out food groups to lose weight will cause extreme

Case Study Of Charlie Gard
Whose Autonomy is More Important?
In the case of Charlie Gard, an infant diagnosed with infantile–onset encephalomyopathy
mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS), there are several moral problems that come into
play when talking about what should or should not have been done to treat him. In this paper, I am
going to discuss the moral problem of the case and argue why the court systems made the morally
correct decision to stop Charlie's treatment after treatment became futile.
The underlying issue, in this case, is what Charlie's parents wanted and what was in the best

Case Study 1: Integrated Logistics for DEP/GARD Bobby Norton Saint Leo University Abstract
The winds of change brings about new and while fading the old away. This is true with life and it
was also true for Tom Lippert, a sale representative for Dupont Engineering Polymers (DEP). DEP
is faced with change as their long time GARD contact, Mike O'Leary turns over his responsibilities
with his predecessor, Richard Binish. Richard trust the relationship that Mike has developed with

move finish products to another warehouse to verify and prepped order for shipment. * Time wasted
unsorting orders. The order and paperwork should somehow be kept together in order to eliminate
this requirement. Using the primary DEP suppliers (60 percent of business), what is the minimum
performance cycle for the supply chain diagrammed above? What is the maximum? Using the
primary DEP suppliers (60 percent of business) the minimum performance cycle for the supply
chain is eight days and the maximum is 25 days. This is based of size and scope of the order and
delivery constrains. Can the performance cycle be improved through the use of the 25 percent and
15 percent suppliers? What trade–offs must be made to use these suppliers? Performance cycles can
be improved through the use of the 25 percent and 15 percent suppliers. The new suppliers would
need to be reliable and punctual. Small deviations create large problems therefore, a higher premium
for consistency would be well worth the extra expense in the long term. If you were Tom Lippet,
what changes would you make in DEP's operation? Why? What problems do you foresee as you try
to implement these changes? If I were Tom, I would minimize the amount of waste present in my

The Internet Effect: How Has It Affected You?
Commonly known as the Internet, the world's largest network is used extensively throughout the
world today. Since its creation in 1983, the Internet has continued to grow in popularity and use as a
commercial and private communications medium. Millions of people throughout the world use the
Internet in a variety of ways, ranging from personal conversations to on–line shopping. According to
a survey compiled by Nua Ltd in 1999, the number of Internet users rose from 26 million in 1995 to
205 million in 1999, an increase of almost 700% (Nua Ltd)! With such an explosive increase, how

The Internet is thus a virtual market place where people can, at the click of a button, select products,

would take weeks. <br><br>With the increasing popularity of people shopping and purchasing
goods online, the Internet has created "new ways of doing business" (Maney 4). Realizing the
potential of the Internet, many companies have started to advertise their products and services on–
line. By marketing their products and services on–line, companies are able to constantly update the
site's product catalog and inform buyers of any changes. Companies, especially new ones, can now
allow themselves to be made known to the consumers through advertising over the Internet.
Furthermore, there is lesser overhead cost involved, as sales persons and order takers are no longer
required. In addition, the Internet has also enabled low budget organizations to reach interested
parties across the country or the world. All of these lower costs have resulted in lower costs for the
consumer. Many on–line shoppers can find good deals and low prices for desired goods, leading to

Symptoms And Treatment Of Pseudocholinesterase Deficiency...
Abstract Pseudocholinesterase is an enzyme that breaks down certain drugs used during general
anesthesia. Pseudocholinesterase deficiency syndrome is one of many genetically transferred
conditions. It may also be acquired by other means. It is not a common occurrence but is more
common in particular populations. When inherited the syndrome is caused by the mutation of a
certain gene known as BCHE. There is often no apparent symptoms to look for in an individual.
Unless there is a family history of this problem the patient does not realize that he/she may have the
genetic trait for this syndrome until they are under the effect of anesthesia. Diagnosis of this
deficiency is usually discovered by performing a blood test and comparing the levels of two
different substances. Treatment is fairly simple once it is known that the patient is
pseudocholinesterase deficient. Pseudocholinesterase Deficiency Syndrome Pseudocholinesterase
deficiency syndrome is usually the result of a genetic mutation to the BCHE gene. This mutation
causes the patient to be highly sensitive to drugs that are given during general anesthesia,
specifically choline esters. When these choline esters are given to a patient their muscles used for
breathing and movement are relaxed. If the patient is deficient of the pseudocholinesterase enzyme
they are not able to metabolize the anesthetic drugs quickly enough. Therefore, it takes longer for

Case 1: Integrated Logistics for DEP/GARD Tom Lippet, sales representative for DuPont
Engineering Polymers (DEP), felt uneasy as he drove to his appointment at GARD (Automotive

GARD had proceeded smoothly. Oftentimes competitors were not even invited to bid on the GARD
business. Mike O'Leary, purchasing agent at GARD, claimed that was because no competitor could
match DEP's product quality. But this contract negotiation was different. Several weeks before the
contract renewal talks began, O'Leary had announced his plan to retire in 6 months. GARD

Light banter continued as the three moved down the hallway to a small conference room. "Well,
great news, Tom! DEP has the contract again!" O'Leary paused, then continued, "But there's going
to be a slight modification. Instead of the traditional 2–year contract we're only going to offer a 1–
year deal. Nothing personal, just that management feels it's only fair to Richard that these last
contracts I negotiate be limited to a year. That way he doesn't get locked into any deals that might
make him look bad!" O'Leary roared with laughter at his last comment. "It is certainly no reflection
on DEP," Richard interjected. "It simply gives me a chance to evaluate suppliers in the coming year
without being locked into a long–term contract. If my evaluation concurs with what Mr. O'Leary has
told me about DEP I see no reason that our successful relationship won't continue." "Entirely
understandable," replied Tom as his mind pondered the meaning of Binish's evaluation. "I'm
confident you'll find DEP's service and product every bit as good as Mike has told you." Following
the meeting O'Leary invited Lippet to join him for a cup of coffee in GARD's lunchroom. Binish
excused himself, saying he had other matters to attend to. As they enjoyed their coffee, O'Leary

Chaac Disease
Disease
Chorea–Acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a neurological disease that is extremely rare to come across,
affecting only about 500–1000 people worldwide (GHR). ChAc is one of a handful of uncommon
diseases named neuroacanthocytosis (GARD).
Etiology
The disease is caused by mutations in the VPS13A gene (GARD). People with ChAc have reduced
Chorein protein, which is encoded by VPS13A (Baeza par. 19). In addition, theoretically, people
with normal levels of Chorein can still be diagnosed with the disease (Baeza par. 19). Similar to
Huntington's disease, it is inherited from parents, but both parents must have the mutation because it
is recessive. Because of this restriction, few people have it, but there are more carriers than affected.
Symptoms
Signs of this disease develop around adulthood and worsen as the person ages. Cognitively, the
disease affects the ability to learn and remember, but it does not affect every patient (GARD). The
main two symptoms are chorea, which is an abnormal involuntary movement disorder, and
acanthocytosis (GARD). Acanthocytosis is one of the defining characteristics of ChAc; which the
red blood cells have an abnormal star shape body (GARD). Although acanthocytosis is one of the

been able to identify Ivy's problem as aquagenic urticaria (AU), a rare condition in which a person is
allergic to water. According to local news station Fox 9, they believe she may be the youngest

prescription of antihistamines meant to reduce allergic reactions. Doctors have recommended that
the family stay in a home with a central air system and only purified water be used for her baths and

Relation Between Fast Food Restaurants and Obesity
Fast Food Restaurants and Obesity
Introduction
The combination of increasingly sedentary lifestyles, two–income families with children, busy
single professionals and the proliferation of fast food restaurants in recent years has created a
"perfect storm" of obesity in the United States as well as a number of other countries. Further
exacerbating the problem is the lack of nutrition and high levels of fat content in many fast food
restaurant products, making their consumption a high–risk activity for many people today. In
response to increasing public concerns over these trends, some fast food chains have introduced
healthier and culturally specific choices for their consumers, but critics suggest that these initiatives
fail to go far enough in addressing the problem. To determine the facts in this case, this paper
provides a review of the relevant literature concerning the role of fast food restaurants in
contributing to the increasing levels of obesity around the world in general and in the United States
in particular. A summary of the research and important findings are presented in the paper's
conclusion.
Review and Discussion In a process termed "McDonaldization," the proliferation of fast food
restaurants has been alternatively credited with and blamed for spreading Western values and
business practices to other countries. Irrespective of these implications, though, the harsh reality of
this proliferation of fast food alternatives has been epidemic–levels of

Presuppositions In Biblical Psychology
I've always liked asking thought provoking question. In fact, that's why my friends told me to take
this class. So, here I am, and I'm blown away. The first chapter of our book, Biblical Psychology, by
Dr. Edgington, was about presuppositions. After reading the chapter, there were topics that I thought
were thought provoking; and there were some points that I agree with; and there were some points
that I not necessarily disagree with, just points that I thought were lacking.
To keep things short, I'll just talk about one topic that I found thought provoking. During the
presupposition section about God being a personal God, the idea of suffering was discussed. I think
this is a good topic to think about. Today, it seems like we will sacrifice suffering for comfort or
dignity. An example of this is Charlie Gard. Charlie Gard was an infant that suffered from a
degenerative condition. The doctors refused to all his parents to take him to the United States for
treatments because they thought Charlie Gard should die with dignity. We've lost the value of
suffering. Suffering allows us to grow: emotionally, spiritually, and ... Show more content on

Some of the topics I think hit the nail on the head. These topics are presuppositions, respects for
human beings, and hypocrites. The first point I agree with is that presuppositions are the end of
every argument. What this means is that we look at certain pieces of evidence through a defined
worldview. For example, I was watching a debate whether science can prove the existence of God.
The Christian proposed that the universe is so finely tuned to support human life that an intelligent
being had to have created the universe. On the other hand, the atheist proposed that the universe is
so chaotic that it was just by chance that human being exist. Both are looking at the same pieces of
evidence, but because of their worldviews – their presuppositions – they come to two completely

A Chance to Sea Life
During my senior year at Baldwin High School, while sitting in my Environmental

or the topic of discussion being taught, it never failed to spark my interest. Reflecting back, my
Environmental Studies class played a vital role in allowing me to overcome my fear of the ocean.
My decision to participate on a field trip which required us to explore the coral reef up close was a
difficult one, and in retrospect, it was the right choice because it changed me; it helped me to think
differently about my capabilities, become more courageous, and made me feel like I achieved the

breathing, which seemed to be amplified in sound, as we slipped into the ocean's cold abyss. I
remember telling myself, "I can't believe this is happening! This can't be real!" Hearing the sound of
the sea water rippling past my ear, as Chad and I approached Coral Garden, confirmed how very real
it was. In the distance, I saw a spectrum of soft, inviting, colors of the secluded coral reef. Hues of
peach, yellow, and rosewood coral looked like little castles built upon the sand in all shapes and
sizes scattered throughout the ocean's floor. As we got closer, I saw various schools of colored
herbivore fishes greet one another as they fed among an antler coral, and the warm embracing rays

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Literary Analysis Essay
Thematic Analysis of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an epic tale, filled with challenges, but it is also a tale of
morality at heart. Sir Gawain is a courageous and generally upstanding character whom adheres to a
strict code of knightly conduct in which he honors and obeys his lord to the best of his abilities, but
overall is worried about the assurance and advancement of his honor as a knight. According to
Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, many view this
tale as the "unveiling of a knights improper behavior"(Zott 2002), due to the challenging
temptations Gawain encounters, and the mistakes he makes. Taking a different approach, The

Many scholars have suggested that the character of The Green Knight is a Christ figure and the
seduction of Lady Bercilak parallel's Eve's temptation of Adam with the apple in the Garden of Eden
(Gard 2012). Another perspective sharing the view of christianity could be derived from the time of
year, the setting of this story is right around Christmas and New Years, which can not only represent
the importance of christianity during the medieval time period, but also signifies new beginnings.
Numerous critics are fascinated due to the melding of Christian and pagan elements on the
pentangle, a symbol on Gawain's shield which the Gawain–poet describes in very detailed fashion
(Zott 2002). Sir Gawain values the christian virtues of repentance and humility, and personally
experiences this in the amount of humility and embarrassment he possesses when he learns that the
Green Knight is aware of his possession of the girdle. Overall Gawain learns that a man will be
forgiven for his misdeeds, and that all men are inherently sinful when he is deemed an honorable
knight anyway, even–though he carries a sense of everlasting guilt for this

The Effects Of Meditation On The Mind And Body
On many Occasions, physicians may be unable to attribute any physiological medical explanation
for a patient's reported pain symptoms. As the mind and body are one, the physical manifestations of
pain may be directly related to a manifestation of the mind. As the mind has the ability to induce
physical pain upon the body, it may also have the ability to abolish such somatic pains with
conscious efforts of mindfulness meditation on states of distress.
Orme–Johnson, Schneider, Son, Nidich, and Cho (2006) hypothesized that transcendental
meditation would have long–term effects on an individual's physiological brain components
responsible for pain management. The reduction of pain would be due to the reduction of distress
through meditation that would also reduce the prefrontal cortex's response to pain, and also a
reduction of the thalamus response to pain. The sample included a total of 12 men and 12 women
from Orange County and Los Angeles recruited from meditation centers. The control sample
consisted of 12 healthy individuals who were interested in transcendental meditation, and the
experimental sample consisted of 12 healthy individuals who have been practicing the meditative
technique for an average of 30 years. The neuroimaging was conducted at the University of
California, Irvine using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The experimental procedure

The Pont Du Gard In Nimes From 20-16 BCE, And The Pantheon
Roman Architecture has always been embraced deeply due to the simplicity and the aesthetic
sensation it communicates. However, the actual reason it is truly recognized, is by its very structured
and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many
aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts,
design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how each design satisfies its intended purpose and
large exterior and interior spaces. There are many important Roman designs, but the two designs
that demonstrate the Roman design methodology is the Pont du Gard in Nimes from 20–16 BCE and

In the Pantheon, the primary materials used in the Pantheon include brick, granite, concrete,
volcanic rock. The importance of concrete in this designed is it helped create the so famous dome in
the Pantheon. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The dome has a circular oculus in the middle which emits
light. The heavy dome is held by concrete foundations and is made of concrete which demonstrates
how they mastered concrete so greatly. According to (Encyclopedia Britannica), the dome measures
about 142 feet in diameter and has a rising height of 71 feet above its base. (The dome also is said to
have a brick faced walls inside the design for support. The design also has arches and vaults that
serve as a structural load. The arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression
to the dome. This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very crucial to
understanding why the Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial
aspect in this design because vaults are a series of arches that create a structural load. The arches
helped created compression between the domes and the vaults which were in the bottom of the
pantheon help create compression with the arches making the dome very strong. Understanding the

suppliers, the longest lead time to receive polymer is 9 days from the 60% suppliers. To receive,
process, and produce the material for the customer order, you then add 8 days, as this is the longest
production cycle time. Orders are sent to the warehouse, prepared for shipping, and another 6 days
may elapse before the order is actually shipped. Using the assumption that GARD is within the 200
mile radius, the longest time that delivery may take place based on twice a week deliveries is 2 days.
This gives us a total of 25 days. Vice versa, when looking at the minimum performance

Charlie Gard Case Study
In the case of Charlie Gard, an infant diagnosed with infantile–onset encephalomyopathy
mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS), there are several moral problems that come into
play when talking about what should or should not have been done to treat him. In this paper, I am
going to discuss the moral problem of the case and argue why the court systems made the morally
correct decision to stop Charlie's treatment after treatment became futile.
The underlying issue, in this case, is what Charlie's parents wanted and what was in the best
interests of Charlie. We have an issue of autonomy, or "a person's rational capacity for self–
governance" (Vaughn, 2017, p. 81), for both the parents and child. Charlie's parents wanted to try

The hospital had a responsibility to the patient to do what was best for him and cause no harm. They
did this by choosing to discontinue their treatment, letting Charlie live the rest of his life free from
tubes and without having to endure any more, potentially painful procedures.
Though parents have the right and the responsibility to make choices for their child, Charlie's
parents were not in a rational state of mind when making the decision to keep him on life support
and attempt the experimental treatment. In this type of situation, most parents would do anything to
keep their child alive, but they may actually be causing more harm to their child than good. Parents
are typically unable to see the reality of the situation when there is nothing left to do and disregard
the idea that the doctor has their patient's best interests in mind. Because the patient or parents are
unable to think rationally about the situation, it is the doctor's responsibility to do what is best for
the patient. An example of this can be seen in the case of Mr. Howe, a man in his late thirties
suffering from complications of gallbladder surgery. Mr. Howe was fighting sepsis, but since it was
caught in the early stages, treatment was simple. His doctors needed to put him on a ventilator for a
few days to allow the antibiotics time to fight the infection. Mr. Howe refused a ventilator, but when
he became unconscious the

Indigenous Australians

  • 1. Indigenous Australians Aboriginal Spirituality Aboriginal spirituality originally derives from the stories of the dreaming. The dreaming is the knowledge and a sense of belonging that the Aboriginals had of the beginning of life and the relationship to the land and sea (Australian Museum, 2011). The dreaming stories are passed on from one generation to the next orally. These stories teach the following generations how to behave towards the land and other people. The dreaming stories give them a sense of duty to protect the land and appreciate it because the dreamtime stories indicate that the spirits have not died but are still alive in different forms as animals or humans, therefore the ancestor's power is still felt through the landforms (Clark, 1963), ... The Aboriginal– Protection controlled the lives of the aboriginal people by deciding on their behalf of where they should live or how the children should be raised (Australian Museum 2011). Some aborigines were exempt from these decisions because they had been raised to a more European lifestyle and were given a citizenship, which could be taken away from them. However; in 1969 the Aboriginal– Protection was abolished and the responsibility of the aboriginals was carried on by Indigenous Affairs, which was then the aborigines were recognized and given the same rights as other Australian citizens( Australian Museum, 2011). Impacts of invasion and settlement of First Fleet on Aboriginals The First Fleet sailed from Portsmouth in 1787 by captain Arthur Philip which carried 729 convicts to Australia where they had to live in a penal colony and work for the government. In 1788, eleven ships had anchored on Australian shores(Dunn.C and McCreadie. M. 2010). Australia then encountered a drastic amount of change, hopeful beginnings, hopeless failures and noble achievements. The settlers did not question the aboriginals for the permission to settle on their land but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It could be financial, political, or literally natural disaster. While so, housing alone takes up major portion of total energy usage. According to United States' Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it accounted for 38.9 percent of total U.S. energy consumption in 2005. In year 2006 it took 72 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption and this number will rise to 75% by 2025. So it can be seen how change in managing housings can lead to positive changes (EPA).
  • 4. Green building technology tackles against these problems with many different technologies, adopting them appropriately for each aspects of energy conservation. While so, 2 examples that directly fight against specific aspects are brought up here. 2.2 Heat Control Firstly, it has been said that the heating and cooling process of a household heavily uses electricity and causes substantial carbon emission. Following are statistics stated by EPA: The average household spends at least $2,000 a year on energy bills – over half of which goes to heating and cooling. Out of the total energy consumption in an average household, 50% goes to space heating, 27% to run appliances, 19% to heat water and 4% goes to air conditioning. The numbers are self–explanatory; heating and cooling alone is a big part of whole energy consumption. Temperature control technology for green building enables reducing such consumption and carbon emission. During ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Pont Du Gard: The Well-Known Roman Empire The well–known Roman Empire has left us many historical buildings and monuments during its era. Among these fascinating historical buildings, there were a number of important ancient bridges that carried water to cities, the aqueducts. One of the most famous and well–preserved ancient aqueducts, Pont Du Gard was built in the first century AD. It played an important role by supplying water to the city of Nimes, formerly known as Nemausus, from a spring at Uzes which is 40 kilometers away. A Roman statesman, Marcus Agrippa, was believed to build this structure during Augustus era but the fact was twisted due to recent researches. • 10. Why Do People Overcome Procrastination? Procrastination is the act of putting off doing things at a later time or date for no particular reason. For the person experiencing procrastination it can be either functional or dysfunctional according to the degree of the behavior (qtd. in Sweitzer 11). A person that procrastinates must realize they have a problem and find effective ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. According to Joseph Ferrari, a Professor of psychology at DePaul University, states that twenty percent of people realize they are chronic procrastinators which is a lifestyle to them. Some procrastinators are not born but pick up the behavior from family members (12). There are various reasons why people procrastinate. Some people procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, poor time management, to escape things that seem difficult or unpleasant, feeling depressed or guilty, and fear being judged by others. Some believes that procrastination is brought on by laziness or lack of discipline, but according to Gard, a writer for Current Health 2 disagree, saying there are perfectionists that often procrastinate. For example, a perfectionist may put off writing a paper until the night before it is due and than have an excuse if they get a less than perfect grade, "I did it in a hurry" (22). For example, some philosophers and scientists, such as Aristotle and Einstein, "questioned if time even exists if people are not around to make it", and Einstein "believed that time was muddle in which the past, present and future were mere illusions" (qtd. in deWaal). Some people do not realize they are procrastinators because of some personality disorders. A personality disorder called passive–aggressive is "chronic conditions which make a person seem to comply with the desires and needs of others, but actually passively resist them. They become increasingly hostile and angry" (Moore & Jefferson). The cause of this disorder is unknown but some of its symptoms are, avoiding responsibility by claiming to forget, having fear of authority, procrastinating, and resisting other people's suggestions. Counseling can help and identify the problem if it is treated at an early stage (Moore & Jefferson). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the war many of the food that was grown was sent to the war so communities started growing their own gardens to help supply food for the community. The way it worked was that each community would grow certain crops that were calorie rich. We determined the calories need for our community was to be 78 million because there is about 3,500 people at school and each person would consume about 2,000 over a period of 5 months. My planting plans would be about accurate, I wanted to have more calories than needed. I got good places to plant crops and good crops. I decided to use dates because it was very rich in calories. • 14. Should High School Sports Be Banned Should High School Sports be Banned? Growing up in a rural community, I have noticed how sports have impacted the people of a community and unified the members of a team. Sports have become apart of everyday life for many Americans, and many high school kids, like myself, take part in the playing of a sport. However, sports have become much more complex. Along with practices, student–athletes are now required to dedicate many more hours of their day to sports, and many do not have enough time to do other activities such as homework. Also, sports have become increasingly dangerous, and more athletes are sustaining injuries such as concussions. In some American high schools, sports have become more important than academics. Knowing that students have huge workloads with hours of homework every night, schools should consider all their options to help their students succeed even if that means banning sports. Looking at the opposing side, one can see the benefits of high school sports. Due to academic eligibility rules to play on sports teams, dropout rates have decreased for at–risk students that play sports (Bowen and Hitt 11). This has caused student–athletes to be more likely to go to college, earn higher wages, and have positive relationships with school employees (Bowen and Hitt 10). Obviously, students who participate in sports have higher fitness levels compared to those who do not play sports. Also, a survey done in 2002 by the Department of Education showed that ... How Does Camille Preaker's Role Change Throughout The Novel Throughout the novel Sharp Objects main character Camille Preaker, is faced with many obstacles in life: lies, betrayal, death, depression, etc. Except for turning the other cheek and accepting her imperfections Camille throws in the white flag instead and lets all the negative things dawn on her. Ever since Camille was 13 years of age she had been cutting words into her body. Due to self harm, the cutting eventually sent her to a psychiatric hospital for 6 months. At the age of 30 Camille had got a job as a journalist and a staff reporter for the fourth–best newspaper in Chicago. Her editor Frank Curry who helped her in recovery and was pretty much the only person that she's ever told about her cutting asks about her hometown Wind Gap in Missouri. Camille tells him the basics and how she left the town just 8 years earlier with her sanity barely intact. Nevertheless, there was an investigation going on in the town and he wanted Camille to cover it. There's a 10 year old girl missing in Wind Gap, the second in two years, he tells her. • 18. Roman Concrete Construction Spanning across three continents, the Roman Empire took on several massive building projects that dominated the landscape and left behind important marks in history. The building industry in Rome was larger in scale and more organized than anything before it. First of the two would have to be the new building material of the time called concrete. The Coliseum in Rome, the Triumphal Arches of Titus and Constantine, The Pantheon of Rome, and the Pont–de–Gard in Nimes, France. Often the success of a society is judged by the structures it creates. Therefore, the might of Rome can be seen not only in its engineering projects and structures, which rivaled all other ancient civilizations, but also in the sense of order and superiority which was conveyed by their achievements. The Pantheon of Rome and The Pont–de–Gard in Nimes, France are two classical examples. • 22. How Did Roman Cultures Use Arches The Roman Empire is credited with the development of many great achievements. These achievements can still be seen in Rome and throughout the world. The Romans are well known for their aqueduct system and huge colosseum that are still standing today. These monumental building feats would not have been created without the use and knowledge of many different techniques. The use of cement was one of the technologies employed to build these large structures. The utilization of arches was another. Many people associate the idea of arches with the Romans. However, they were not the first people to utilize arches. This paper will concentrate on why the Romans were credited with developing the arch; what they did to improve previous cultures use of arches; and how the Romans used arches to create massive structures that are still standing today. The Romans were the first builders in Europe, perhaps the first in the world, to fully appreciate the advantages of the arch, the vault and the dome (Cartwright, 2013). The Romans are credited with creating arches because they used them so often and in extremely large structures. Most people have heard of the Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Heaton describes the Roman aqueducts as one of the greatest achievements in the ancient world. The aqueducts transported water from reservoirs at a higher elevation to different locations within Rome. At the height of the Roman Empire, they needed to supply water to over one million people. There was over 260 miles of aqueduct built during the Roman reign. The aqueduct system worked due to gravity. The water would flow from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. The Romans tried to follow the lay of the land as best as they could, but sometimes, to keep the gradient so that the water would continue to flow, they would have to tunnel the aqueduct through mountainsides or even build large bridge like structures to span across valleys (Heaton, ... • 24. Failure In Roman Architecture The Romans were recognized and renowned for their engineering accomplishments, having pioneered engineering materials and structures, some standing till date. Despite these achievements, they have been accused of failing in aesthetics. I believe terming Roman architecture as failure aesthetically is extreme due to their pragmatic nature and practical approach, evident from the aqueducts, the amphitheatre and Roman temples. The Romans constructed aqueducts to transport water from different sources into metropolitan areas. According to Anderson (2012), the primary purpose of the aqueducts was to transport water from valleys into town. The bridges and viaducts on aqueducts were necessary for aqueducts to support the water flow, instead of "architectural glories to be admired." Anderson felt the Pont du Gard was a mixed piece of architecture from the Romans. They stayed organized by listing the soft yellow limestone bricks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They built several amphitheatres mostly homogeneous, varying in size namely Pompeii, Arles and Nîmes. Buildings made of concrete in the Roman Empire were politically and ideologically motivated, establishing the significance and prestige amphitheatres held. Experienced teams were sent out of central Italy to construct amphitheatres outside the capital. A Roman hierarchical seating system designed for the platform seating arena, or cavea, was incorporated into the amphitheatres. In terms of size and extravagance, none could be compared to the majestic Flavian amphitheatre, more commonly known as the Colosseum. The exterior design of the Colosseum was in Doric, Ionic and Corinthian order surrounding the façade of the amphitheatre, a lavish stadium created by the Romans to showcase their power, wealth and talents on the grandest ... At first glimpse, it seems as though Flack has merely painted many random objects. However, if the viewer goes beyond a quick glance and spends time closely examining the painting, connections can be made to help understand the vanity of life. The meaning behind Wheel of Fortune brings unity to this otherwise unstructured painting. The symmetry found in Christian Boltanski's Altar to the Chases High School is one thing that makes the piece pleasing to the eye. The Pantheon was constructed by Hadrian in 125 A.D, and is the most visionary building of Ancient Rome. It is the largest dome of it's type in Ancient Rome, and required the technique of building arches at 360 degrees around a point. The Pantheon had a dome of 44 meters across, and five types of cement were used to keep the weight distribution as minimal as possible. The Pantheon is also one of the best preserved buildings due to the many techniques of building the structure. The Coliseum began construction in 72 A.D. by the emperor Vespasian. Europe Introduction One thing is permanent about art throughout the ages and civilizations of time: it always expresses some aspect of the culture that produced it. So it may be seen in Renaissance Italy in Michelangelo's David, or in Hellenistic Greece in the Dying Gaul. The Egyptian statue of Anubis reveals something about the spiritual belief of those ancient people, and the abstract expressionism of Kandinsky in the 20th century represents the shift in intellectual concepts of modern spirituality. Art throughout the ages has always been coupled with some sense of otherworldliness. My recent travels through time have confirmed this and these pages will show exactly how artworks from late 2nd century BC China, 1st century BC Rome, and 16th century Northern Europe illustrate the fact that art in every time and place may serve as a shining example of the beliefs and cultural attitudes of that time and place. Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi's Tomb (200 BC) My initial time travel destination is China in the year 200 BC. Here I examine the resting place of the First Emperor of Qin. Buried in Qin Shi Huangdi's tomb are thousands of life–size terra–cotta replicas of his soldiers and tell us something of the warrior–tyrant, who unified China: "This man was a Bonaparte, a ruthless warlord, who destroyed a great deal of the then civilization, 'burning books and slaughtering scholars,' as one text has it, to end what was known as the ... • 34. The Design Of Roman Aqueducts The Design of Roman Aqueducts: Pont du Gard Roman structures dominated the Roman values and power across the landscape of Europe. Many of these structures, especially the aqueducts, show significant evidence of the Roman architecture and engineering superiority. Not only that their structures are highly durable, standing monumentally over thousands of years, the cleverness in the design of their water distribution system is an achievement to be mesmerized, considering the 200 million gallons of water being supplied daily to the city of Rome herself by the early 4th century AD . This essay will investigate Pont du Gard as one of the most magnificent members of the Roman aqueducts, in regard to its design processes, along with the technological issues in relation to the aqueduct design. Pont du Gard functioned as an aqueduct bridge, a portion of the Nimes Aqueduct, delivering the majority of the water supply to the city of Nemausus (Nimes, France), an important colonial city of Rome. Its unarguably remarkable size, being over 49 m tall, makes it the biggest bridge the Roman engineers had ever constructed, only a metre shorter than the Colosseum, and it is still standing until today. Another important feature of this aqueduct is the maintenance of the gradient over the distance of 50 km. The gradient over the whole course of the aqueduct is only a mere 0.034 percent and the actual gradient on the section downstream of Pont du Gard is no more than 7 mm per 100 m. This ... These disorders can be caused by a variety of things, but one that is commonly overlooked is exercise. The major consensus is that diet and exercise, will only contribute to a healthier lifestyle. In reality, this ideology of exercise as an unproblematic activity is pushing children and adults alike to develop eating disorders. With each of these disorders comes its own string of problems that can have implications that affect individuals for life. What makes exercise 'compulsive' is when someone will spend many hours a day exercising several days a week, if not every day, and this problem is usually encountered by people who have anorexia and bulimia (Orthorexia, Excessive Exercise & Nutrition). General signs of a compulsive exerciser are being increasingly bothered by weight/size; ambitious fitness targets; cancelling social events to train; refusing to take time off despite injury; mood swings and the inability to eat if they have not achieved their exercise goal (Orthorexia, Excessive Exercise & Nutrition). A prime example of this is the story of Lindsey from the Zanker and Gard article she would exercise every day multiple time, and be upset if she didn't reach her fitness goal. Later she tells the story of a time she injured her back she refused to quit training because she would become fat (Zanker and Gard 54). This story exposes a major problem stemming from exercise these individuals are only aiming to exercise so that they work off calories in order to lose weight. This is a self–esteem driven problem, these people don't feel good, or see their day as ruined if they don't burn a certain number of calories, or if they skip a workout. It is easy to see how this will lead to an eating disorder, because if these individual can't lose the weight with only excessive exercise their only other option is to cut calories, and many times they will cut calories in a drastic manner. If someone is anorexic or bulimic and is using compulsive exercise as a way of compensating for their eating behaviors this is using up essential calories, which are needed to carry out the simplest functions (Orthorexia, Excessive Exercise & Nutrition) Going to the gym most days is considered a good thing, but training hard to the point of excess, or cutting out food groups to lose weight will cause extreme ... In the case of Charlie Gard, an infant diagnosed with infantile–onset encephalomyopathy mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS), there are several moral problems that come into play when talking about what should or should not have been done to treat him. In this paper, I am going to discuss the moral problem of the case and argue why the court systems made the morally correct decision to stop Charlie's treatment after treatment became futile. The underlying issue, in this case, is what Charlie's parents wanted and what was in the best interests of Charlie. We have an issue of autonomy, or "a person's rational capacity for self– governance" (Vaughn, 2017, p. 81), for both the parents and child. Charlie's parents wanted to try every possible treatment even though, at a certain point, continuing to treat Charlie would no longer do anything for him. This involves several moral values, including the responsibility of the parents to make decisions about their child's treatment and the responsibility of the doctors to do what is best for Charlie. Charlie's MDDS is incurable, and at the time of his diagnosis, there were no approved treatments for the disorder. He was getting progressively worse and was being kept alive by the use of a ventilator after suffering from a seizure that caused brain damage. At this point, the hospital deemed Charlie's treatment to be futile and they decided to stop his treatment. Their decision to stop treatment was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pseudocholinesterase deficiency syndrome is one of many genetically transferred conditions. It may also be acquired by other means. It is not a common occurrence but is more common in particular populations. When inherited the syndrome is caused by the mutation of a certain gene known as BCHE. There is often no apparent symptoms to look for in an individual. Unless there is a family history of this problem the patient does not realize that he/she may have the genetic trait for this syndrome until they are under the effect of anesthesia. Diagnosis of this deficiency is usually discovered by performing a blood test and comparing the levels of two different substances. Treatment is fairly simple once it is known that the patient is pseudocholinesterase deficient. Pseudocholinesterase Deficiency Syndrome Pseudocholinesterase deficiency syndrome is usually the result of a genetic mutation to the BCHE gene. This mutation causes the patient to be highly sensitive to drugs that are given during general anesthesia, specifically choline esters. When these choline esters are given to a patient their muscles used for breathing and movement are relaxed. If the patient is deficient of the pseudocholinesterase enzyme they are not able to metabolize the anesthetic drugs quickly enough. Therefore, it takes longer for the ... Further exacerbating the problem is the lack of nutrition and high levels of fat content in many fast food restaurant products, making their consumption a high–risk activity for many people today. In response to increasing public concerns over these trends, some fast food chains have introduced healthier and culturally specific choices for their consumers, but critics suggest that these initiatives fail to go far enough in addressing the problem. After reading the chapter, there were topics that I thought were thought provoking; and there were some points that I agree with; and there were some points that I not necessarily disagree with, just points that I thought were lacking. To keep things short, I'll just talk about one topic that I found thought provoking. During the presupposition section about God being a personal God, the idea of suffering was discussed. I think this is a good topic to think about. Today, it seems like we will sacrifice suffering for comfort or dignity. An example of this is Charlie Gard. Charlie Gard was an infant that suffered from a degenerative condition. The doctors refused to all his parents to take him to the United States for treatments because they thought Charlie Gard should die with dignity. We've lost the value of suffering. Suffering allows us to grow: emotionally, spiritually, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the topics I think hit the nail on the head. These topics are presuppositions, respects for human beings, and hypocrites. The first point I agree with is that presuppositions are the end of every argument. What this means is that we look at certain pieces of evidence through a defined worldview. For example, I was watching a debate whether science can prove the existence of God. The Christian proposed that the universe is so finely tuned to support human life that an intelligent being had to have created the universe. On the other hand, the atheist proposed that the universe is so chaotic that it was just by chance that human being exist. Both are looking at the same pieces of evidence, but because of their worldviews – their presuppositions – they come to two completely different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. A Chance to Sea Life During my senior year at Baldwin High School, while sitting in my Environmental Studies class, I learned of my passion for the great outdoors. Whether it was plants, animals, sea life, or the topic of discussion being taught, it never failed to spark my interest. Reflecting back, my Environmental Studies class played a vital role in allowing me to overcome my fear of the ocean. My decision to participate on a field trip which required us to explore the coral reef up close was a difficult one, and in retrospect, it was the right choice because it changed me; it helped me to think differently about my capabilities, become more courageous, and made me feel like I achieved the impossible. Mr. Gard, my Environmental Studies teacher, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He grabbed my hand as we got to the edge of the boat and said, "Are you ready?" I took a deep breath as I felt the awkward fins clinging onto the skin of my feet and nodded, "yes," as I exhaled, "I'm ready." I didn't allow myself to think about anything at that moment. I just focused on my breathing, which seemed to be amplified in sound, as we slipped into the ocean's cold abyss. I remember telling myself, "I can't believe this is happening! This can't be real!" Hearing the sound of the sea water rippling past my ear, as Chad and I approached Coral Garden, confirmed how very real it was. In the distance, I saw a spectrum of soft, inviting, colors of the secluded coral reef. Hues of peach, yellow, and rosewood coral looked like little castles built upon the sand in all shapes and sizes scattered throughout the ocean's floor. As we got closer, I saw various schools of colored herbivore fishes greet one another as they fed among an antler coral, and the warm embracing rays of the sun tickled my body as I moved across the water, slightly beneath the surface of the calming ocean. At that moment, I felt incredibly free, and all of my fears of the ocean seemed to vanish as if they didn't even exist. I detached myself from Chad after a while and ventured out on my own, but I always kept my eye out for him to make sure he was close by. It didn't take long before I heard the air horn blow, which meant it was time to head back to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Literary Analysis Essay Thematic Analysis of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an epic tale, filled with challenges, but it is also a tale of morality at heart. Sir Gawain is a courageous and generally upstanding character whom adheres to a strict code of knightly conduct in which he honors and obeys his lord to the best of his abilities, but overall is worried about the assurance and advancement of his honor as a knight. According to Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, many view this tale as the "unveiling of a knights improper behavior"(Zott 2002), due to the challenging temptations Gawain encounters, and the mistakes he makes. Taking a different approach, The Overview of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight argues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many scholars have suggested that the character of The Green Knight is a Christ figure and the seduction of Lady Bercilak parallel's Eve's temptation of Adam with the apple in the Garden of Eden (Gard 2012). Another perspective sharing the view of christianity could be derived from the time of year, the setting of this story is right around Christmas and New Years, which can not only represent the importance of christianity during the medieval time period, but also signifies new beginnings. Numerous critics are fascinated due to the melding of Christian and pagan elements on the pentangle, a symbol on Gawain's shield which the Gawain–poet describes in very detailed fashion (Zott 2002). Sir Gawain values the christian virtues of repentance and humility, and personally experiences this in the amount of humility and embarrassment he possesses when he learns that the Green Knight is aware of his possession of the girdle. Overall Gawain learns that a man will be forgiven for his misdeeds, and that all men are inherently sinful when he is deemed an honorable knight anyway, even–though he carries a sense of everlasting guilt for this ... • 66. Research Paper On Pont Du Gard The Pont du Gard The Pont du Gard is a dazzling three tiered aqueduct built over the River Gard, built around the year 20 BC in Nîmes, France. Nîmes located in the south region of France, was once a vital outpost of the Roman Empire. Surprisingly, the aqueduct has preserved its original structure. The structure is approximately 165 feet tall and 1,000 feet long, the largest the Romans had ever built. The Pont du Gard transported water nearly 30 miles from the Eure spring to the city of Nîmes. The Pont du Gard consisted of three tiers of arches, each tier differed in size as well as number of arches. The bottom arches have spans of 15m to 21m, and 155m wide and 20m high. • 72. The Effects Of Meditation On The Mind And Body On many Occasions, physicians may be unable to attribute any physiological medical explanation for a patient's reported pain symptoms. As the mind and body are one, the physical manifestations of pain may be directly related to a manifestation of the mind. As the mind has the ability to induce physical pain upon the body, it may also have the ability to abolish such somatic pains with conscious efforts of mindfulness meditation on states of distress. Orme–Johnson, Schneider, Son, Nidich, and Cho (2006) hypothesized that transcendental meditation would have long–term effects on an individual's physiological brain components responsible for pain management. The reduction of pain would be due to the reduction of distress through meditation that would also reduce the prefrontal cortex's response to pain, and also a reduction of the thalamus response to pain. The sample included a total of 12 men and 12 women from Orange County and Los Angeles recruited from meditation centers. The control sample consisted of 12 healthy individuals who were interested in transcendental meditation, and the experimental sample consisted of 12 healthy individuals who have been practicing the meditative technique for an average of 30 years. The neuroimaging was conducted at the University of California, Irvine using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). • 74. The Pont Du Gard In Nimes From 20-16 BCE, And The Pantheon Roman Architecture has always been embraced deeply due to the simplicity and the aesthetic sensation it communicates. However, the actual reason it is truly recognized, is by its very structured and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts, design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how each design satisfies its intended purpose and large exterior and interior spaces. There are many important Roman designs, but the two designs that demonstrate the Roman design methodology is the Pont du Gard in Nimes from 20–16 BCE and The Pantheon from 125 A.D. To understand, how these designs emphasized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Pantheon, the primary materials used in the Pantheon include brick, granite, concrete, volcanic rock. The importance of concrete in this designed is it helped create the so famous dome in the Pantheon. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The dome has a circular oculus in the middle which emits light. The heavy dome is held by concrete foundations and is made of concrete which demonstrates how they mastered concrete so greatly. According to (Encyclopedia Britannica), the dome measures about 142 feet in diameter and has a rising height of 71 feet above its base. (The dome also is said to have a brick faced walls inside the design for support. The design also has arches and vaults that serve as a structural load. The arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression to the dome. This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very crucial to understanding why the Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial aspect in this design because vaults are a series of arches that create a structural load. The arches helped created compression between the domes and the vaults which were in the bottom of the pantheon help create compression with the arches making the dome very strong. Looking at figure 1. below, you will see the diagram outlining the supply chain value stream enabling DEP to delivery product to GARD. Areas which fail to add value, and have the potential to erode DEP's ability to remain a valued supplier for GARD include the following: 1. Failure to utilize LEAN manufacturing principles causing DEP to carry excess inventory: Inventory shortages which caused shutdowns leading to DEP to abandon LEAN principals look to be primarily driven by a lack of structured supplier management. Suppliers of key raw materials were selected based solely on price, with DEP neglecting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assuming a Tuesday and Thursday delivery schedule, and order that is ready to ship late Thursday (possibly missing the fleet truck leaving the warehouse), now will not ship until Tuesday the following week, adding three business days to the total performance cycle to the order. Stages which are value added: 1. Same day movement of produced finished goods to warehouse 2. Utilization of DEP fleet trucks to make deliveries to short distance customers Figure 1. Upon reviewing the primary suppliers of polymer feedstock for DEP, specifically the suppliers awarded with 60% of the volume, I am able to calculate a maximum performance cycle of 25 days to deliver product to GARD. Assuming inventory is NOT available for some reason requiring an order from polymer suppliers, the longest lead time to receive polymer is 9 days from the 60% suppliers. To receive, process, and produce the material for the customer order, you then add 8 days, as this is the longest production cycle time. Orders are sent to the warehouse, prepared for shipping, and another 6 days may elapse before the order is actually shipped. Using the assumption that GARD is within the 200 mile radius, the longest time that delivery may take place based on twice a week deliveries is 2 days. This gives us a total of 25 days. Charlie Gard Case Study In the case of Charlie Gard, an infant diagnosed with infantile–onset encephalomyopathy mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS), there are several moral problems that come into play when talking about what should or should not have been done to treat him. Charlie's parents wanted to try every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hospital had a responsibility to the patient to do what was best for him and cause no harm. They did this by choosing to discontinue their treatment, letting Charlie live the rest of his life free from tubes and without having to endure any more, potentially painful procedures. Though parents have the right and the responsibility to make choices for their child, Charlie's parents were not in a rational state of mind when making the decision to keep him on life support and attempt the experimental treatment. In this type of situation, most parents would do anything to keep their child alive, but they may actually be causing more harm to their child than good. Parents are typically unable to see the reality of the situation when there is nothing left to do and disregard the idea that the doctor has their patient's best interests in mind. Because the patient or parents are unable to think rationally about the situation, it is the doctor's responsibility to do what is best for the patient. An example of this can be seen in the case of Mr. Howe, a man in his late thirties suffering from complications of gallbladder surgery. Mr. Howe was fighting sepsis, but since it was caught in the early stages, treatment was simple. His doctors needed to put him on a ventilator for a few days to allow the antibiotics time to fight the infection. Mr. Howe refused a ventilator, but when he became unconscious the ...
