This document summarizes an article about indigenous entrepreneurship in a Maori context in New Zealand. It discusses how Maori social organization was based on a balance between elders (rangatira) and youth (potiki). Traditionally, the tribal system supported collective access to resources and balanced individual interests. In contrast, British colonizers promoted individualism and private land ownership. Their arrival disrupted the traditional Maori system and exploited tensions between rangatira and potiki for political gain. However, some colonial leaders like Sir George Grey recognized the importance of indigenous models of entrepreneurship and preserving the balance in Maori society.
