NZEI Te Riu Roa is a union for early childhood and primary teachers in New Zealand. It works to address issues teachers face such as fixed term employment, qualifications, employment conditions, and student loans. The union empowers teachers by giving them a collective voice and working together to change things individual teachers cannot change alone such as employment policies and support for beginning teachers.

Research plan draft Importance of Students’ interaction in the school Area of Focus The purpose of this study is to identify the importance of students’ interaction in the school. It has been shown that student interaction helps students to learn and gain skills and knowledge that provide them with foundation for later learning. This study will also increase the knowledge of teachers about particular types of child teacher interactions that encourage the development of young students. Problem –interest There is a clear prove that it is these daily interactions that students have with their teachers that play a great part in their performance in class. The interactions students gain during their early years in school, i.e. during the early childhood stages, have a lot to do with the engagement of students later in their advanced school years as it is during these early stages that the children gain skills and knowledge that offer them the foundation for later learning. Students learn many of the skills when still young and through their interaction with their teachers. another thing that led me to have interest on this topic is the fact that all learning involves participation. for instance you cannot learn to play a guitar without actually picking it and practicing. When I studied about past research about what tutors really do everyday to make a difference in the lives of students, I learnt that there is a clear prove that it is these daily interactions that students have with their teachers that play a great part in their performance in class. I also observed that it was not with teachers alone but also the interactions with students with their fellow students and parents as well have a role in their development. I noted with a lot of concern that the interactions students gain during their early years in school, i.e. during the early childhood stages, have a lot to do with the engagement of students later in their advanced school years as it is during these early stages that the children gain skills and knowledge that offer them the foundation for later learning. Practitioner research by a UK teacher, Effimia Stavrea. She explored teacher professionalism, perceptions, as well as factors that impact upon their performance and the role of leadership in the enhancement of teacher effectiveness. As the teaching profession has been through harrowing times and the recruitment and retention issue has been the major focus of the public attention in the U.K., this study further investigated factors that led to the crisis and sought potential solutions to alleviate the problem. In this study, a focus group interview of six primary school teachers was conducted in order to examine teachers’ viewpoints on four key areas: a) teacher professionalism, values and perceptions; b) teacher motivation, commitment and retention; c) teacher professional learning and development; and d) teacher effectiveness, performance and emotions. 2019

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Editor's Notes

YMN is a network of young, new and student members of NZEI, the union for early childhood and primary teachers and school support staff.
All young or new members can participate in the network.
Groups, such as young and new members may have issues or concerns that aren’t shared or understood by the wider membership of the union.
Unions need to ensure all members have the opportunity to have a voice.
Young and new members have strength and can make a real difference.
The network works fairly informally, the focus is on issues rather than rules and structure.
An annual network hui, a get-together before the AGM of the union and a couple of elected convenors ensure there is an opportunity for young and new members to address issues they are concerned about.
Young and new members have strength and can make a real difference.
Those that got together quickly identified that there were issues that particularly affected young and new members that weren’t understood, (or sometimes supported) by the wider membership.
The network linked up with existing union structures set up for student teachers and was soon able to organize a national get-together with other like minded members. This has continued on an annual basis.
YMN has succeeded in addressing the issues of young and new members. YMN has become influential within NZEI ensuring issues faced by young and new members are understood and addressed.
In 2004 and 2005 YMN developed a comprehensive campaign on the negative effects of student loans on NZEI members.
Young and new members have strength and can make a real difference.
In 2006 the focus was on fixed term employment. The network succeeded in getting a union campaign on this issue put in place.
Young and new members continue to be vulnerable to a number of employment, registration and economic issues.
