CHAPTER 3 Building Culturally Responsive Family–School Partnerships: Essential Beliefs, Strategies, and Skills
Ellen S. Amatea
Learning Objectives
After reading this chapter, you will be able to:
■ Summarize the essential beliefs about family–school partnerships that guide educators’ professional practice.
■ Describe specific strategies that an individual teacher might use to develop collaborative relations with his/her students’ caregivers.
■ Summarize the specific aspects of a school’s social climate that might be altered to create a more collaborative family–school environment.
■ Describe specific core routines that can be redesigned to enhance the climate of family–school relations across a classroom or school.
■ Discuss the structural supports needed to create family–school partnerships.
■ Summarize the research evidence about the effectiveness of family–school collaboration.
■ Outline the essential attitudes and skills needed by educators committed to building collaborative family–school partnerships.
I was surprised to learn how many of the messages we send to parents from schools have been about the school telling parents what to do. We need to make our family–school communication more two-way so we can learn from families as well as they can learn from us.
I never thought about how intimidating the school and teachers are to some parents, particularly those who did not have good experiences in their own schooling. I need to recognize that parents/families may have very different perspectives on my invitations from the school.
I am recognizing that if we only contact parents when there is a problem, they will continue to dread interacting with schools and teachers.
Like the educators depicted in the previous comments, many educators are beginning to realize that the traditional ways that schools have interacted with caregivers can often put them on the defensive. To send a different message to families—especially those who are culturally diverse—these educators are redesigning both how they think and how they act with the families of their students. Rather than having a one-sided focus on getting parents involved, these educators are using a variety of ways to come together with families to enhance children’s school performance and development. How are they doing this? What theories and ways of working with families do they rely on? How are their new ways of working responsive to the widely varying cultural backgrounds of today’s students and families? In this chapter, we discuss the distinctive beliefs that underlie a culturally responsive approach to family–school collaboration and the theories on which it is based. We then illustrate how these ways of thinking have been translated into action by showcasing the practices of individual educators and of school-wide teams committed to developing these types of family–school relations. Finally, we discuss the skills required to create such partnerships and describe how we will examine .

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. INTRODUCTION
Effective communication is essential in every facet of an evolving society.
According to American Federation of Teachers “ Effective communication
is essential for building school-family partnerships. It constitutes the
foundation for all other forms of family involvement in education;”
Additionally, it is the glue that bonds the relationship between teacher
and student, teacher and parent and teacher to teacher. This creates a
harmonious relationship and helps to foster an environment that is
conducive to learning.
3. Importance of a Positive
Relationship
Benefits for the Students
It has been stated that parents involvement
benefits students by:
Raising their academic achievement
Motivation for learning
Improved behavior
Regular attendance
A positive attitude about homework and
school in general.
Benefits for the Parents
School’s communication and interaction with parents
affects the extent and quality of their involvement with
their children’s learning.
They benefit from being involved in their children’s
education by getting ideas, learning about the school’s
programs, and how it works.
They become more confident about the value of their
involvement
The role they play in their child’s education
4. Benefits for the Teacher
Parental involvement can free
teachers to focus more on teaching
students
By having more contact with
parents, teachers learn more about
student’s needs and home
environment, so that the necessary
steps can be appropriately applied.
Parents who are involved have a
more positive view of the teacher,
which results in improved teacher
morale.
5. Importance of positive Relationship cont.
Benefits of Teacher to Teacher Relationship

have a relationship with you
Be open minded about other teachers, this reduces insinuations
which creates problems.
Develop an amicable relationship so that there is a united front,
this will help students feel secure
Being reliable, respectable and responsible reduces stress and
resentment among colleagues.
6. Parent – Teacher Relationship
Partnering with each other for a common good
7. Teacher and Parent: Practical
Ways to develop a positive relationship
Teachers – Have regular rapport with parents both in and outside of the PTA.
Have parents in a social group, so that there is an open communication line. Be sure to openly
and individually thank parents for their support and tell them how their help impacted the
students.
Involve parents in planning activities for children in and out of the classroom. Including
disciplining methods. Invite parents to celebrate and break bread together.
Smile when you see parents, greet them. Most parents only occasionally interact with
teachers so make sure that it is impressionable and positive, warm and friendly.
8. Teacher and Parent Practical
Ways to develop a positive relationship
Your language is powerful. It communicates an awareness that there are many different
kinds of families. Be careful not to assume. Learn to ask open- ended questions and
understand that sometimes parents/guardians might not want to share some information.
Ask questions about the child- what does he/she do outside of school? Who are the special
people in their lives?; Demonstrate an interest in knowing your students.
Listen to the parents/guardians they know a lot about their kids. Smile at the child when
talking to a parent, make eye contact with the student to demonstrate that you care about
the child.
9. Teacher and Parent Practical
Ways to develop relationship
Make a positive phone call Home. Identify those students who perhaps need a positive call
home.
Lead with good news. Give positive praise first when calling or meeting parents then address
concerns. Adhere very strictly to this rule. Share every success.
Let them share their cultural traditions, interests, passion, skills and knowledge with you, so
that they can make significant contributions especially if it connects to the curriculum and
content.
Be a broker of resources. If they share a concern, be prepared to point them to a direction
where they can find help; if you share a concern be prepared to suggest what the parents
can do.
11. Teacher- Student Relationship
It is most critical that a teacher develops a
relationship with their students. This is done by
getting to know each student, their cultural,
social, economical and spiritual background. It is
also very important to understand the individual
student and their learning needs so as to teach
them effectively.
Developing the trust of the students is also critical. It is
important that respect is maintained between both the teacher
and the student. Allowing the student to interact and voice their
opinion on subject matters can also create an atmosphere where
students feel as if they are given a chance to express themselves
and that their educators care about their learning experience.
12. Practical ways to Develop a Teacher-Student
Relationship.
A teacher must be consistent in the application of her work. The Teacher must be
knowledgeable in their subject matter, this necessary as there are students who learn in
different ways and different frequencies, therefore they must be versatile in their teaching.
Teacher must follow through with what he/she says they will do . This allows for trust building.
The teacher should allow students to experiment and experience lessons and allow them to
make certain decisions within the classroom.
Develop a relationship so that student can feel comfortable to approach the teacher to make
queries, ask for advice, or be able to confide in a teacher.
13. Practical ways to Develop a Teacher-Student
Relationship
The Teacher can give students assignments that would foster creativity , show their skills,
and share their experiences and interests.
The Teacher can incite classroom discussions and allow students to lead out while they are
just looking on as the mentor, moderator, mediator.
Teachers can learn a lot about their students by interviewing them, In that way you learn
about the students likes and dislikes, abilities or disabilities or any other issues.
As a Teacher, a relationship can be solidified by offering help to students. This will develop a
lot of confidence on the student’s part about the teacher and therefore the teacher can then
apply the lessons, since the students needs would have been met that student can now focus
on their school work. Trust is also developed.
15. Teacher to Teacher Relationship
Teachers need to develop a relationship
with each other so that students can see
that they are working together in
harmony, and that their best interest is
being sort after by their teachers. Isolation
is a very real issue in the teaching
profession. It is easy for teachers to
become isolated from each other through
cliques or groups.
However, each teacher should recognize
that they all serve one common function and
a similar purpose and that is the
development and success of each student
entrusted into their care. Therefore, it is
paramount that teachers find effective ways
to collaborate and not just exist, but work to
develop relationships with each other as
professionals.
16. Practical Ways Teachers can Develop
Relationship with Their Colleagues.
A Teacher should be able to communicate with his/her colleague at all times
They must be able to assist each other in reaching goals for the benefit of the
students of the school.
They ought to share ideas and learn from each other, create an environment
that is instrumental in shaping, developing and creating brilliant minds.
Teachers must be willing to work with each other so as to prevent power
struggle and frustration which can impact on the teacher’s productivity
level and quality of teaching.
17. Practical Ways Teachers can Develop
Relationship with Their Colleagues.
Forming. This is the easiest stage where a team comes together with a sense of excitement and
anticipation. People begin to learn about each other and develop processes for how their group will
function.
Storming. Teaching styles and practices can be a very sensitive and personal area for many teachers. Those
who are used to working in isolation can find it difficult to share ideas or have their practices questioned
however it is necessary for the sake of the students.
Norming. As teachers continue to collaborate, they begin to see the positive side of collaboration. There is
an increase in productivity, relationships improve and focus is on achieving a consensus through shared
input.
Performance. The teachers reaches high levels of functioning- Academic and professional growth is
exponential. When there is a disagreement, it can be discussed with a sense of collegiality and
understanding that the main goal is the improvement of a learning environment for every student.
18. Conclusion
It is of integral importance that there is a collaboration among teachers and parents and
teachers, so that students can benefit and reach their optimum potential. There are many
hindrances that affects the harmonious relationship among each group represented. It is
however, necessary to take into consideration the individual’s culture, religion, social, economic
and psychological factors that affect these different relationships. They significantly impact the
progress and development of the students therefore, creating positive relationships with
students, parents and other teachers are both necessary and beneficial, not only for the students
but for a better society on the whole; where educated young men and women are the product of
