State of Modern Neuroscience + Machine Learning - (Jeremy Freeman) Jeremy Freeman is a neuroscientist working at the intersection of biology and technology. He wants to know how the brain works, and how understanding it can change the design of intelligent systems. He's passionate about open source and open science, and he helps develop a variety of tools for data analysis, visualization, collaboration, and reproducibility, including binder (http://mybinder.org/), thunder (http://thunder-project.org/), and lightning (http://lightning-viz.org/). He leads a group at Janelia Research Center (https://www.janelia.org/), and collaborates actively with scientists, developers, and designers across a range of fields. Jeremy is going to describe the state of modern neuroscience, and how it might relate to machine intelligence. After more then a century of studying the brain, we know frustratingly little about how it works. At the same time, we're building artificial systems with remarkable capabilities and performance in an ever growing variety of domains. How can these two worlds inform one another? What are the limits of current machine intelligence? What do we not yet understand about biological intelligence? What tools and concepts do we need to make progress? Jeremy won't answer these questions, but will try to capture our current thinking, and show why he is excited where these two fields are heading. Understanding Music Through Machine Learning - (Brian McFee, Moore-Sloan Fellow at New York University's Center for Data Science) Brian McFee is a Moore-Sloan Fellow at New York University's Center for Data Science. Commodity Machine Learning - (Andreas Mueller) Recent years have seen a widespread adoption of machine learning in industry and academia, impacting diverse areas from advertisement to personal medicine. As more and more areas adopt machine learning and data science techniques, the question arises on how much expertise is needed to successfully apply machine learning, data science and statistics. Not every company can afford a data science team, and getting your PhD in biology, no-one can expect you to have PhD-level expertise in computer science and statistics. This talk will summarize recent progress in automating machine learning and give an overview of the tools currently available. It will also point out areas where the ecosystem needs to improve in order to allow a wider access to inference using data science techniques. Finally we will point out some open problems regarding assumptions, and limitations of what can be automated. Andreas is an Research Engineer at the NYU Center for Data Science, building open source software for data science. Previously, he worked as a Machine Learning Scientist at Amazon, developing solutions for computer vision and forecasting problems. He is one of the core developers of the scikit-learn machine learning library, and has co-maintained it for several years. His mission is to create open tools to lower the barrier of entry for machine learning applications, promote reproducible science and democratize the access to high-quality machine learning algorithms.

We have tablets with keyboards; laptops that become tablets; laptops with touch screens; phones with physical keyboards; and even phones that become desktop computers. Not to mention new forms of input like cameras, voice control, and sensors. We've learned how to respond to screen size. Our next challenge is learning how to adapt to different forms of input.

At Kaggle, we’ve run hundreds of machine learning competitions and seen over 80,000 data scientists make submissions. One thing is clear: winning competitions isn’t random. We’ve learned that certain tools and methodologies work consistently well on different types of problems. Many participants make common mistakes (such as overfitting) that should be actively avoided. Similarly, competition hosts have their own set of pitfalls (such as data leakage). In this talk, I’ll share what goes into a winning competition toolkit along with some war stories on what to avoid. Additionally, I’ll share what we’re seeing on the collaborative side of competitions. Our community is showing an increasing amount of collaboration in developing machine learning models and analytic solutions. I’ll showcase examples of this and discuss how these types of collaboration will improve how data science is learned and applied.

With the proliferation of rich Internet applications and interactions more closely aligned with how people think, we face some interesting challenges: * Do we design for one common audience and common tasks, or tailor applications around specific audiences and their unique activities? * How do we resolve the tension between creating simple applications that ‘do less’ and the demand for new features that some people really do need? * As we move beyond usability to create desirable interfaces, how do we handle a subjective domain like emotions? These types of challenges could all be addressed by creating a truly ‘adaptive' interface. More than removing unused menu options or collaborative filtering, this would include functionality that is revealed over time as well as interface elements that change based on usage. Imagine the web-based email client that begins offering three forms fields for attachments instead of the default one, because it 'noticed' that you frequently upload more than one file. Or the navigation menu that disappears because it is not relevant to the task at hand. Sound scary? Look at the world of game design, where inconsistency has never been an issue and where users learn new functions over time, as needed. In the same ways that ads are becoming more targeted around context and behavior, we can also create interfaces that respond, suggest, or change based on actual usage data. While much of this is still speculative, we'll explore some concrete examples of how such ideas have already been used, and other instances where they could be used. We'll also take a brief look at what technologies might support these interactions, as well as some of the rules engines that might make this possible. And, to ground this in the past, we'll at some existing navigational theories and research that might support this argument for an interface that is truly conversational and context aware.
