OR
“Organic Food is
Always Healthier.”
Answer: Myth!
9
○ No convincing evidence that shows a difference between
organic and conventionally grown foods related to cancer risk
○ Market studies show pesticide residues on conventionally
grown foods are almost always within safety tolerance limits
○ Wash up!
○ Shop wisely -- some foods have higher pesticide levels than
others (see next slide)
○ Remember: just because a food is organic, doesn’t mean it’s
healthy! (e.g. organic cookies)
The advantages of eating a variety vegetables and
fruits strongly outweigh any risks from pesticides.
Environmental Working Group (EWG)
10
← Buy
organic
when/if
possible
(accessible
and
affordable),
but don’t
stress!
11
OR
“Sugar Feeds Cancer.
Avoid it at All Costs!”
Answer: Myth!
12
○ Our cells need glucose to function!
○ Prefered source of energy for the brain and muscles
○ Our bodies will still find other ways to create glucose through
metabolism of fats and proteins
○ HOWEVER, diets high in sugar → high blood sugar levels→ raise
insulin levels→ proinflammatory state
○ High sugar foods are typically high in calories and over time a
high calorie diet leads to excess weight
○ Excess weight is linked to greater risk of several types of cancers
Sugar alone does not promote cancer. Consuming small
amounts of sugar as part of a healthful diet is fine!
Outsmarting Sugar
13
○ All people should strive to limit added sugars and
sugar-sweetened beverages
○ Focus on natural sugars in fruits and vegetables, which come
pre-packaged with fiber, water, antioxidants and nutrients!
○ Try to pair high-carbohydrate foods with protein, fat, and fiber
○ Enjoy sweets in moderation
14
OR
“I Need Supplements to
Stay Healthy.”
○ You cannot get the protective benefits linked to eating whole foods by
isolating specific substances into pills.
○ If you are eating well and do not have absorption issues, you likely do
not need supplements.
○ Some cancer patients DO need supplements - must be discussed with
medical team.
■ After certain surgeries (especially GI related)
■ Vitamin D: critical for immune function and bone health and is a
common deficiency
■ B12 for vegans
■ If unable to eat a healthy, varied diet
Answer: Probably Not!
15
Supplements cannot replace a varied and
healthful diet! Always talk to your doctor.
16
Be a Nutrition Detective!
○ Don’t believe everything you hear/read!
○ Talk to your doctor/nurse/dietitian before making any drastic
changes
