The answer to these questions is personal and it varies not only between survivors but also in different settings and relationships in your life. We talk together about personal experiences and questions surrounding this important topic.

remain open to other perspectives, to be
curious, to lovingly hold our ground, to
genuinely understand
PRACTICE: Before an important conversation,
take a minute to choose your intention. Pick
a word or phrase to ground you and return to
it as needed to remind you.
What is my intention?
How do I want to show up?
Are my actions aligned with my values?

8. EXAMPLES: to connect, to seek support, to
set limits, to feel understood, to celebrate.

yourself, why is this important to me?
What do I want the other person to

9. Expressing &
Understanding
• Pace the conversation.
• Ask what others may already
know.
• Say what you really need to say.
• Ask, “does this make sense?”
“What are you thinking?”
• Be honest.
• Give yourself permission to
pause the conversation.

10. Navigating
Awkward
Interactions
• Learn your trigger points.
• Recognize the limits of others

• Prepare responses for
redirecting the conversation.
“Thank you for asking, I’d rather
not talk about it right now.”
• Practice finding calm so you
are prepared for unexpected
