This document provides a historical perspective on nursing and computers from the 1960s to present. It discusses how computer technology initially emerged in response to changes in healthcare and was used for basic office functions. Over the decades, computers became more integrated into nursing practice through documentation, administration, education, and research. Standards and terminology were developed to support electronic health records and nursing practice. Major events established nursing informatics as a specialty and increased the role of computers in transforming nursing.
