What is Informatics?
• Combination of the terms information
and automatic /automation which means
automatic information processing.
• A science that combines the domain
science, computer science, information science
and cognitive science.
Definition
• American Nurses Association (ANA)1994,has
defined nursing informatics as the development
and evaluation of applications, tools ,processes
and structures which assist nurses with the
management of data in taking care of patients or
supporting the practice of nursing .
• Hebda (1998) , defines nursing informatics
as the use of computers technology to support
nursing , including clinical practice ,
administration , education and research .
What was the need of Nursing
Informatics?
• Designed to speed up paper work and
communication.(1st generation).
• It helped the nurse transfer the information to
the computer what she had written on the paper.
• Systems replaced paper .
How did it help the Nurses?
• Helpful and effective in reducing the time spent
on documentation and communication.
• Evolutionary standards of practice increase the
nurses accountability.The malpractice crisis has
strenghthened accountability and increased
emphasis on complete and detailed nursing
documentation
Uses of Nursing Informatics
• Improved access to the medical ward. The data
can be accessed from several different locations
simultaneously, as well as different levels of
providers.
• Decreased redundancy of data entry. For
example vital signs need to be entered.
• Decreased time spent on documentation. For
example ,automation allows direct entry from
monitoring equipment .
• Improved communication and decreased
potential for error improved legibility of
clinician documentation and orders is seen with
computerized information systems
• Creation of a lifetime clinical record facilitated
by information systems.
Nursing Informatics in India
• In 2001,started a discussion group for Medical
Informatics .In 2002 ,got its own website and
started Indian Journal of medical Informatics in
2004and conduct biennial conferences regularly
.In 2014,the 8th Asia Pacific Association for
Medical Informatics was organized with a
collaboration between IAMI and AIIMS, New
Delhi and workshop on Nursing Informatics' for
the First time was organized in the 9th IAMI
Biennial Conference held at AIIMS, New Delhi
on 30th October.
Conclusion
• Nursing Informatics is the science and practIce
,integrates nursing its information and
knowledge with management of information and
communication technologies to promote the
health of people ,families, communities and
worldwide
