NEW HIRE EDUCATION TOOL
Agenda
• Define nursing informatics
• Describe the nurses roles and responsibilities in data management
• Describe a nursing informatics model
• Explain why comfort with technology and informatics is important in
patient and administration
• Identify ways new nursing hires may be come more comfortable with
health care technology
WHAT IS NURSING INFORMATICS?
Nursing Informatics is “broadly defined as the use
of information and computer technology to
support all aspects of nursing practice, including
direct delivery of care, administration, education,
and research.
The definition of nursing informatics is
evolving as advances occur in nursing practice and
technology.”
(Hebda, & Czar, 2013)
Nurses roles and responsibilities of managing data
• Computerized documentation
• Use of patient technologies
such as monitors, pumps, and medication
dispensing
• Information management
for patient safety
(AORN, 2014)

Why should we become comfortable with technology and informatics in patient care and
administration
• Patient Care
Nursing informatics can facilitate
and support nursing research by evaluating patient
outcomes, evidence-based practice, standardized
terminologies, and provide effective nursing care.
• Budget and Finance
Executives use nursing informatics to help them
with cost containment, improved workflows, decision
support, budgeting tools, and trending costs
and savings. and virtual knowledge bases.

What strategies can we provide to increase new hires comfort with informatics
We will be completing a crossword quiz, at the end of this lecture. After, completion, you will be
awarded certificates of completion.
Here is a search engine that will assist you in completing the NI crossword quiz
CONCLUSION
Utilize your Resources
• Get to know your I.T. Person
• Attend all hospital in-service training
• Take on-line computer classes
• Spend time with the Unit Secretary and
ask for additional training
• Ask Nurses on the Unit for assistance, as
needed
• Ask your children and grandchildren for
help. They are wizzes at the computer.
And don’t be embarrassed to ASK for
help 

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Nursing Informatics is the synthesis of nursing science, information science, computer science, and cognitive science for the purpose of managing and enhancing health care data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to improve patient care and the nursing profession. . Computers in nursing practice are necessary. We use information and communication technology to document and evaluate patient care, advance patient education and enhance the accessibility of care
  • #5  Nurse informatics supports the work that nurses do . It allows quick access to information when and where it is needed by the people who need it to facilitate the delivery of safe, effective safe, patient care, support administrative decisions and enhance the education of nursing students, health care consumers, and the public through the use of well-designed and well-used technology
  • #6 Lewin’s change theory is a ‘planned change” guide. The Hospital must have a need for change, and go through the process of moving staff from one direction to another. Staff must be able to adapt to the changes and they must also be willing accept the new changes. Staff must also be able to pinpoint what the driving forces are, be it to deliver safe and quality patient care. Or, adhere simply to the consensus of the stakeholders. Involved in the decision making process. (Unfreezing) The first stage involves finding a method if making it possible for people to let go of an old pattern that was counterproductive in some way. This is the stage where desire to change occurs. (Change or Adaptation} The second stage involves a process of change in thoughts, feelings or behaviors. During this stage, the people involved are convinced that the new way is better than the old. (Refreezing) The third stage consists of establishing the change as a new habit or process, so that it now becomes the “standard operating procedure” The changes implemented are “frozen” in place to ensure that they become part of normal working procedures. Driving forces are forces that influence a situation, pushing in a particular direction, such as frustration with the current way of doing things (such as paper documentation) and the implementation of computer based nursing.
  • #7 Nurses must become comfortable with Informatics, because it rules every aspect of their nursing practice and affects the quality and outcome of the care that they provide their patients. As, nurses learn nursing informatics, they must learn to use all information technologies effectively, recognize the benefits and limitations of this technology, and integrate them into their practice.
  • #8 Nursing Administration can offer on-line self assessment classes in computer technology. Hospitals can offer CEU’s as incentives. Quizzes, and Games can also be challenging and offer a level of fun, that will encourage nurses to enjoy participating in Nursing Informatics
